Victorian greenhouse build from start to finish.
This video shows how we made a beautiful victorian style greenhouse over a few months, wood was difficult to get and then paint became difficult to get but we got there in the end and now reap the rewards of our hard labour.
Thank you to my son Tyler, who helped me with the woodwork & labouring, it was a great project to do with my son who is well on his way to becoming a great craftsman.
Also thank you to my good friends James, Richard & Amanda for all your help and hard work put into this build.

Your greenhouse is absolutely NEXT LEVEL! Thanks for patiently showing the build process! This is top notch craftsmanship all the way and you have reliable friends to carry you through!! I don't think I have heard a mention of total costs BTW. Can you please provide this...or an estimate? Thank you!
@ironian24
@ironian24 2 года назад
Thx for the comment, much appreciated, the cost without the labour was £7900.00 total with all the hardware, wood, bricks, cement, sand, glass and fixings. If labour was added you would be looking at another £7000.00 on top of that.

@ironian24
@ironian24 2 месяца назад
@daytodaylivin4418 thx for the comment, The wooden frame just beds down on a layer of cement. This ensures levels are correct. You could use wall brackets, but I never did. The wood is simply pine and treated pine, the roof is jointed and bird mouthed to prevent movement or spreading when weight is applied like glass. It is pretty much in it's forth year and still looking good.

I used red wood, or pine, as long as its well painted it will be fine, I used treated pine for all the cills and ridge, I've had no issues with glass cracking at all. To be fair I had enough to think about building it latalone thinking of making a video. I am sure carpenters and joiners would get the jist of what I was doing, I would not suggest anyone could make this, you need a lot of tools and machinery and a workshop as well as experience. To be honest the video was more a second thought over the build. And I am surprised the video is doing so well. I appreciate the feedback back and appreciate the views and comments this has had, I really enjoyed making this one.

The hangers you used to hold the glass in place at the top of the stem walls is clever. Did you buy those, or fabricate them. Also, the peak, where did you get the jig to make that, same with the steeple pieces on both gable ends. Nice craftsmanship. Also, what color is wood painted?

Loved every bit of the build. There is a lot of paint on it so it should see a good 5 or more years before any painting needs doing. Enjoy your build it is a great project to do and the pleasure just keeps coming in the shape of lovely plants.

I am still considering how wide and deep the grooves in the joist have to be to be able to slide in the glass. I will be using 4mm thick glass. I am thinking about 5mm wide and 15mm deep grooves. What would you reckon? At around 15 minutes you tell that the notches in the joists for the horizontal bars are very important for the strength of the roof. I know that another greenhouse builder (which I think you used as inspirational source) is doing the same. But I doubt that this is the case. It would if these beams were under compression. But in my opinion these horizontal bars are under tension. They prevent the walls from being pushed outwards (called roof spread). Plus they prevent the roof from being lifted under heavy winds. I am wondering what your opinion is.

@@ruudbeckers243 what I did is correct and will stop wall spread. It is the best way to construct any roof lat alone a greenhouse roof that shows its beams

I have never been able to find any picture in normal roof construction where they mount the rafter ties in notches in the rafters (just found out how these beams are called in English). They always mount the rafter ties to the side of the rafters or mount them with metal plates to the rafters. And in case of oak frames via mortise and tenon. I think the notches only weaken the rafters. It looks more attractive though.

Hi there Andy from New Zealand, I would love to visit your part of the world one day, I hear it is stunning, as a landscape photographer I have bucket list places i must visit before the pearly gates day arrives. To answer your question yes I did build from plans, my own plans, very basic but did the job, I have been a carpenter all my working life so I understand the engineering behind a build or at least i like to think so. This build stems from lock down days when things started to become hard to buy, eggs, veg and fruit, so I decided enough was enough and became as self sufficient as I could be with the garden we have, so hence the greenhouse build had to happen, glad I did as this year has been ultra productive with veg and fruit thx to the greenhouse. Have a go and build it, if you need advise I am happy to help, I have become pretty busy because of this build, it has been great to be able to build for other people.

@@ironian24 HI thanks for your reply. yes it does have some good scenery. I lived int eh UK for 5 yrs and spent a lot of time in Wales (wife is a taffy) so would say the UK also has some of the most amazing countryside etc. then your only an hour away from Europe! I hear you on the cost of food etc, we ar having a tough time of it down here with supply as all the ships empty and then dont want to take empty containers back. so good time to get growing! Im no builder, but have a few mates that could help with that. thanks for the offer of help, may take you up on that. im going to try and use as much 2nd hand stuff as possible and keep the cost down while still making something that fits in with our 1860 cottage.
