This was absolutely fascinating! I have always seen these bikes at a stand still, never in use - let alone in use by someone so knowledgable. What a treat.

A few years ago there was a fete in the park up the road to me and to my great interest they had some antique bicycles to show people. There was a Penny Farthing ( which is what we Brits call this bicycle) and a boneshaker. I can't remember what the others were. They offered to let people try the bicycles. I only remember one tall young person brave enough to ride both of them! I am short in height and scared of heights so I did not have a ride. Even the bone shaker was big! I love the look of Penny Farthings though!

Subscribed! I appreciate your use of the word "wheelman". I ran across that term as well as the verb "wheel" ("ride" still meant "horseback" at that time) when researching for my Wright Brothers 1902 glider project.

Thank you for not using the dreaded PF words. The term Ordinary was adopted by the cycling press after the semi-introduction of the Safety Bicycle in 1879. Previously they were just referred to as a Bicycle.
@youtuuba
@youtuuba Месяц назад
sixarragon, it is true that research has shown that highwheel bicycles were not commonly referred to (and maybe not at all, but one can't prove a negative) as Penny Farthings until after they had become obsolete. They were called Ordinary Bicycle, or simply Ordinary, while still in production and regular use, although after the introduction of Safety Bicycles and other improved bicycle models. While "Ordinary" is not derogatory, "Penny Farthing" IS derogatory. It is a British term of derision, dating from a long time before the invention of the bicycle, for anything that had become devalued to the point of being worthless, by the passage of time or for other reasons. Literature is full of earlier (pre-bicycle) uses for "Penny Farthing", always meaning something worthless or significantly devalued, and originates not with the SIZES of two British coins, but their reduced VALUE over time, as in 'a penny and a farthing together are worth but little', and has been applied to many things besides bicycles. Having said that, it is a more fanciful name than "Highwheel" or "Ordinary", so it remains popular, especially in the UK, for these old bicycles.

Are your sources mainly American, English, or other? I know the US Patent Office has a searchable database, for instance, and there must be bicycling magazines on both sides of the pond that have discussed the history of the bike, but I'd like to know if Mr. Chrisman is presenting Gilded Age America or Victorian Britain in this video.

I wonder: how well does this type of bike work without gearing? Is it harder to climb hills, for instance?
@MrEmiosk
@MrEmiosk 3 года назад
Depends on your metric of hard. It works supremely well, only the hills I struggled on gear one has proved to be even remotely difficult. I have found all hills I could climb on highest gear (seven on a holland bike... so no real beast). I would say the harder part is down hill, since past a certain point you have to give up the peddles and pray for nothing that forces a header. The 54" penny I have gotten has proven to be a better, more capable, and comfortable bike. Though since my normal bike is no marvel I can't say if it's better than a modern sports bike. Just that it has in short few days become my main commuting bike, the only thing bad about it yet is cargo space, no bags or baskets... yet.

Crank length vs wheel diameter was as close as the fixed gears got. Longer cranks gave a little more torque, harder to spin fast. Not a huge change though.

What an awesome insightful video on the original Bicycles. I have a few questions for you. How fast can you go on the old time original bicycles as compated to modern bicycles? Is there any intetrst in riding these in our modern times? Are there any replica bicycles being made and serviced? Do you see any advantages with this original design bicycles over modern design bicycles? One thing I can see is it may be harder for a dog or animal to attack the rider on this taller big wheel bicycle. Keep up the good infornative work. Safe Journeys!
@GChrisman1
@GChrisman1 3 года назад
On my high-wheel bicycles I average about 12mph over moderately hilly terrain, compared with 16mph on a single-speed or fixed-gear safety bicycle. The high-wheels are slightly slower. There are some modern riders, but not as many as there should be! There are several companies that make good replicas, and a couple that make pretty poor ones. I definitely prefer many aspects of the antique bicycles - more upright riding position, better view, up away from the dust, mud, and dogs, and they are quieter as well. You can see some of the reproduction bicycles I make at victoriancycles.com/
