My favourite Victorinox models are the New Soldier 08, which I got issiued when I entered military service in 2016 and my Ranger wood 55(its big and has walnut scales). I also really love how many people all arround the world love the knives from my tiny homecountry...

I carry the Cadet in the city, Pioneer in the woods, Electrician stays at work for work stuff and the Huntsman stays in my EDC bag with a Leatherman Rebar to cover all my bases. I love Victorinox. They have something for everyone.

I've been carrying a Huntsman my grandfather gave me for Christmas for 30 years. I replaced the worn and damaged scales, replaced the toothpick and tweezers and added the little screwdriver to the corkscrew. Despite obvious use (nicks and some bending) to the tools, it looks great. When I needed a bit of a slimmer model, I went with the Soldier with the Berry Red Aluminum Scales, and love it immensely.

The irony is,that the only pocket tool that doesn't suck,is a SAK! Spirit X is on my belt and after edcing the Climber for some decades,I had to upgrade to the Explorer.That magnyfing glass,is vital after some age.I found my self using it more than the scissors! Cadet is in my car.I also curry it in hot summer days,in my shorts pocket.A Classic is also on my keychain. PS I have tried other tools from other companies but IMHO,none is close to what Victorinox has to offer. Happy to hear opinions or disagreements!

I have a couple cadets (with the new files) but personally I use the awl/reamer a lot more than a file. I edc an alox pioneer (2018 berry red) and also a Leatherman squirt just in case I do need a file lol. That (pioneer) reamer has so many uses once you give it some thought and it really is one of my most favorite Victorinox tools 👍

Really great video, Jeff! 🍺 I’ve been heavy in to EDC for about 6 years. One of the first pocket knives I picked up was a silver alox Cadet. Carried it every day for just over two years and it never let me down. I ha e been trying to find something “better” for years and have too many pocket knives now. Lotsa fun, cool & useful tools, but nothing has been able to do what I need better than the Cadet. On a side note, Victorinox quality control is exemplary! I have never seen a single flaw on any SAK I have picked up new. I honestly don’t know how they do it?!? Every tool is perfect. Truly amazing! I carry a Cadet nearly every day now.

The older Soldier and current Pioneer is possibly the finest basic pocket knife around. Many prefer multitools to traditional pocket knives, but the virtue of an excellent pocket knife over a multitool is obvious. Mankind has always used edged tools, knives, but how many really need pliers and screwdrivers on their person all day? I collect Victorinox pocket knives, AND I collect multitools. I love them both. But i confess that my most used between the two is my Victorinox MiniChamp with LED light and pen. Also a complete manicure kit. The Pioneer and the Farmer are next for heavy use. Those new to Victorinox should know that they make many locking blades, mostly 111mm and 130mm. But also the 88mm Evogrips. I also have the large Alox Hunter Pro lockback. The old side locks have been replaced with strong liner locks on the 111mm. Not just little red slip joints any more! Not a few have traded in their multitool carry for a Victorinox pocketknife. That won't suit everyone--some need pliers and drivers--but a Pioneer or Cadet would honestly suit many over a bulky butterfly multitool. Cheers!

True, there is a sak for everyone. The one I use and like is the handyman. I have one in mtb and motorcycle tool kits. I've often used this to manufacture repairs. Having a hacksaw / file, wood saw, awl / heavy duty sewing, scissors (scissors are probably the most useful thing on a sak). Pliers etc. The thing is with those extra features I always find a use for them - the large blade screw driver is an awesome lever.

I have a Alox Cadet and Pioneer. Love them. But I also recommend the Recruit which has 2 blades (I like 2) and the Bantam. The Bantam is great for a small EDC and it is the one knife I've carried more as an EDC since I got it in 2002. Just bought my wife and 2 teenage children classics as an extra little Christmas gift. So useful for them to carry about.

I've carried the "Tinker" model for for 30 years. It has 2 cutting blades and a Phillips screwdriver instead of the stupid cork screw. Yet still not very bulky. The tweezers in its handle also very handy.

just got a champ. absolutely love it and has changed my view on knives and tools completely. I always have it in my edc/laptop backpack (computer science student so its full of cords and little things). what really sold me is that i actually used the champ to do minor pc maintenance like installing an m.2 ssd and 2 140mm fans. overall, victorinox is the way to go for reliability. There sure are "stronger" knives and tools out there but for those weird situations you find yourself in where you just wish you had the right tool, theres always a way to figure it out with a victorinox in your pocket

I don't yet own any of the Alox SAK, so I imagine I will eventually get one for the durability and thinness of the aluminum scales. I would probably go with the Pioneer over the Cadet, and if I were going minimalist, something like the Bantam might be an even better choice because it combines the bottle opener and the can opener into a single tool, combined with a main blade, and if you get the one with the plastic scales, you also get a keyring attachment, and tweezers. I know the reviewer likes the nail file, but honestly, I don't use nail files all that much, and almost never on my Swiss Army knives. Annoyingly , on the Alox Bantam models, there is no key ring attachment so you can't just attach it to your keychain, or put a little belt hook on it or whatever. And also, no tweezers, which is a very useful extra tool. Which gets me to my quibble with the Alox models. No tweezers, and no tools on the back. I say this not because I have a daily need for an Awl, Corkscrew or Phillips screwdriver (and never saw a need for the utility hook some models have) but when you need those tools, they are handy. Even better, wouldn't it be cool to put some scissors on the back of a Cadet Alox and call it the Super Cadet? More utility but no increase in weight.

++ I just started EDCing my SAKs. I found a way to prevent them from laying sideways at the bottom of my pocket. I bought some 'Suspension Clips' from Amazon for $8.99 (2). I think they are made for carrying keys. It is like a pocket clip with a ring at the bottom, that can be attached to the ring on any SAK. It doesn't block any tools like the SAK clip. I put a small lanyard at the top of the clip so it is easier to pull out. I wish I had found these ten years ago.

@@hondasaki900 its nice for more detailed bushcraft stuff, being able to throw a quick notch and then use the awl on the same to bore a hole broadens your horizons considerably when paired with a good sturdy main blade. If we're talking everyday practicality it worked great for sawing extra wood to size to use as a mattress support beam in a snap.

If the Cadet took away the can opener and screwdriver/bottle opener and replaced them with the combined bottle/can opener, screwdriver, wire stripper from the Compact or Bantam, they could then add a pair of scissors with no extra bulk or weight which would make the Cadet even better and even more useful to yourself to complement the nail file

I love the Alox line. I have two cadets, a red and a black, and I'm thinking of buying the 2020 limited edition, which comes in light blue this year. I was not too impressed with last year's champagne color though. Also, I've lost two Farmers (two extremely unlucky events) and will replace it soon. This time I'll buy another color. I'm also a big fan of the Pioneer X for its scissors, so who knows.

The Soldier/Pioneer doesnt' have a nail file - but the tip of the reamer is a much better nail cleaner tool than the Cadet's nail file tip. I almost never need a nail file (and if I did, I have a Classic on my key chain) but the reamer is an awesome tool for all kinds of random tasks like opening boxes, scraping, scribing, cleaning out tight spaces etc. With a little fantasy, you can find countless uses for it, nut just putting holes into stuff. That 93 mm Alox reamer is one of my most used tools. That and the bigger, beefier tools make me prefer the Pioneer-line.
@cutlerylover

The best SAK to compare the Cadet too would be (in my opinion), the Sportsman. It has all the features of the Cadet, plus a corkscrew which houses a mini screwdriver, a pin, a toothpick and tweezers but it does have plastic scales. It can also be cheaper than the Cadet, so for functionality it has to be the Sportsman. Desirability, however, is a different thing. What the hell....buy both!
