Victorinox Swiss Army Knife Cadet Alox Multitool Review and Function Demonstration

The Swiss Army Knife Cadet is a classic compact pocket multitool from Victorinox. This review covers all the functions of the small capable blade that also features screwdrivers, bottle openers, can openers, and a nail file. I compare it to Leatherman multitools and a few other Swiss Army Knives like the Super Tinker. If you like this review buy the Cadet from my links below.

And my long long rant of the day to let me sleep better. I went to the dark side. After carrying a Delica 4 and and 2 different Leatherman for a long time I tried one of these cadets. Then after watching the old mcguyver on the CBS Streaming service I started to appreciate victorinox and former Wenger out of nostalgia and how my dad would never buy me a real one and just the fake knockoffs that would be a pile of rust wrapped in a ball of shrapnel after 3 months. Then I went down a rabbit hole on variations and the volumes of crazy history of these knives over the past 140 years. I respect the Cross dude. My griptilian and spydies are now idle, but are there if I need them. And I have started collecting SAK's from as far back as the 30's . (I can't afford the versions prior to that that are in decent ahape) they are not the greatest steel or the greatest functioning, but they fit in your pocket, fit nice in your hand, , they don't corrode, and they sharpen easily. Most of all I quite enjoy not being paranoid that my $200 blade is going to be fucked up when I pry open a small wood box or need to bend some wire or I'm trying to pry my fishing hook off the fk'ing log that I always get snagged on at the pond where I like to fish for a few hours each week. Also I don't sweat it when I'm trying to pry out a F'd up shell in an old rifle or have to break it down to pry a part or spring. Also no big deal when that one dude we all know who doesn't carry a knife needs to borrow it to fix his watch band or bend back a boot rivet on his fancy new slightly effeminate yellow Timberlands or cut open a plastic blister pack whatever that he just grabbed at the gas station and is trying to open it for 10 minutes like a bag of chips with his hands. It will come in handy at the ski hill when my kids bindings need to be adjusted every time the wind changes direction by a single degree. My little Cadet has shown me that I don't need perfect steel and a fancy lock. I still play with the spydies and my benchmade, but I fking live giving my little Cadet a quick sharpen each morning while I drink my coffee and slip it into my front watch pocket of my jeans. I can also peel my orange with it at the office and not have anybody freak the FK out about why I have a knife fit for skinning a feral hog next to my mouse. It's been several months and like I said I now respect the Cross. Used to make fun of people who carried them and ask when their next boy scout meeting was. Now I get what 140 years of making a product contributes to the quality of the product. It's like the go to .22 cal of the knife world. Small fun and practical. And when it does eventually get F'd up of gets some rust on it, you toss it to your 10 year old kid and buy a new one in a new color or variation for $35 bucks. Everyone wins. Respect the Cross.... The Swiss make some pretty good shit and they don't sell out to China. In fact they put away profits each year as a company to make up for the years when things slow down and then they don't have to lay people off. They took a big hit after the 9-11 attacks and there product could no longer be sold at airports or be carried into a keychain at an airport. Sales dropped 40%., But instead of laying off their staff to keep profitable they expanded into luggage and watches with other Swiss companies and kept every single person employed and busy adding value. The shareholder doesn't run the show, the company does. 2 World wars later they are still everywhere for a reason.

I have the mini version of this on my keyring for the past 6 years, and from all the knives I own, this has been used the most , i can't complain, used the file for all sorts of things, screw driver way bigger jobs than it was designed for, scissors for cutting my nails and knife for everything else. I love it

You know I really appreciate the detail shots of the width and height dimensions. So many reviewers just skip over that. For SAKs, I think the thickness is a major factor considering they are multi-layered tools and can get quite thick

Nice review. Hearing you say a Cara Cara 2 costs 20 makes my heart hurt, I can easily pay triple over here in the old continent. I've discussed it with Sal Glesser, and sadly he told me the retailer was doing an ok job of pricing. This is why so many European collectors buy so much from Gearbest. My SAK Cadet is my EDC and probably my favorite pocket knife of all-time. It's very useful yet cheap so losing or destroying it would not be a big deal. He's not too active on social media anymore, but for what it's worth, he has FB and YT. He also sells modded SAKs on eBay. His work looks top notch, but you're looking at Chris Reeve prices for a SAK. To me it will be worth it for EDC though. :-)

Nope, he did it right. You extend the cut with each cycle. On a Victorinox-style can opener, that means inching it "forward" each time. On a P-38 or the kind I've seen on '80s Boy Scout knives and older Leathermans, that means drawing it back with each cut.

Does the Swiss Army even use these? Why were Panama hats so named when they weren’t made in Panama? Discuss
@iamnotgoodwithcomputer
@iamnotgoodwithcomputer 6 лет назад
yes and no. the swiss army issues one variant of a victorinox to every soldier. this particular one is referred to as the "swiss army knife" (plus a number for the year when it was introduced). generally, the victorinoxes are referred to as "swiss pocket knife", or by their respective name.

Panama hats were made in Ecuador but marketed as 'Panama hats' because the market (mostly Mericans) were more likely to support products bearing the name Panama.

If we're measuring in metric now, I think it's obligatory that you say "al-you-min-ee-um" when describing the scales.

Yes but since 2004 they have the larger nylon handled Victorinox Soldier. Previous to that (1961-2004) they were issued what is now called the Pioneer.

Are swiss knives actually multitools? I always thought multitools are built around the full-size pliers. Well, in any case the large army backup knives and their civilian versions are certainly more useful than a ladies' purse knife.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 6 лет назад
They are... and since they have a limited usefulness it's why I rarely carry them. I don't need a survival knife for work either and a Wave is kind of mostly what I need.

The Victorinox catalog has a section for multitools with full size pliers 😉

Oh yeah- the Swiss Tool! The more expensive Swiss answer to the Leatherman! Next time I have $80+ laying around I'll check them out!

A Swiss Army Knife? Is the channel renamed Basic Knife Bro now?

I have had more SAK requests than almost every other knife. I have a few others (seen here) I might do an overview of- but we'll see.

I try to avoid doing that because I know coworkers watch... but a little bit of footage here and there is fine.

I am a service tech (hvacr) and I "lost" my old Swiss after 3 months of carrying and trying to use. If your not in the boy scouts this knife is useless. I did enjoy the little stabby tool, worked good to restring baseball mitts.

Yeah... my job requires only a few basic tools when I'm not in the office- a Leatherman is perfect. If I need real tools I bring a toolbox... but swiss army knives are not something I could clap down a source 4 light to a pole with- like I did my Wave this morning.

Advanced Knife Bro truth be told. I cleaned my nail after work with a Swiss Army knife. I’ve done a lot with Swiss Army knives. They were my first knives. Macgyver was my favorite show growing up.
