In this episode I review the Victorinox Fieldmaster Swiss Army knife. It's a great EDC for those looking to carry a small tool everyday. I go over the features a beginner DIY person would care about, including the secret pin hole, and saw through a 2x4 just to see if it can do it.

CHANNEL STATEMENT: This is a channel about my relationship with stuff. We all need to have a better relationship with the stuff in our lives - we have too much of it, and most of it’s junk. If nothing else I hope you take away with you an interest in the stuff in your life - a curiosity for how it’s made - why it’s good or bad - and perhaps even how build new stuff or fix what you’ve got. Having said that - the internet is a terrible place to learn anything. Unless you independently verify what you learn - you’ll never know if it was right or wrong or made up completely…. Unfortunately disinformation is both the currency and the bane of our era. I’m no expert in anything you’ll see here. I don’t want you to think that I am. Through my job I have access to people who are - and I’ve learned from them over the last couple of decades and become someone who is curious about stuff, brave about stuff , and foolish enough to try and make a youtube channel about my relationship with stuff all at the same time.
DISCLAIMER / PLEASE READ: In making this channel I will put more effort into making the content accurate, safe and correct than most - but that doesn’t mean I can’t be wrong. Accordingly I can’t guarantee or warranty any specific outcome for viewers should they attempt something similar to what they see on the channel. I encourage you not to copy projects you see here directly but build on them - discuss them with experts in your life, and make them better - make them work safely for you. We all need to figure out a better way to own stuff - this channel is meant to illustrate my experience with that, promote learning, have some fun, and challenge myself. Working with any tool or on any project can lead to unintended results - including injury and damage to property. Don’t work beyond your capability. In the same way I have to take complete responsibility for the outcome of my endeavours as recorded here, and my own safety and the safety of those around me - you have to do the same….. Use the information here at your own risk. Be safe, have fun, proceed with the appropriate caution for your situation….

Surprise! The toothpick is the most used tool on my knives! Maybe because I have teeth like stars, not so shiny but just as far apart!🤭 Thanks for the video.

I've just bought a Fieldmaster as it seems to give the best assortment of tools in a reasonably-sized knife. I didn't know about the pin hole though, so will definitely be raiding my wife's sewing kit for one of those!

hope you enjoy the knife - hope the pin hole may be of use to you - Victorinox pins seem to be a bit fatter than many regular straight pins - so if you raid your wife's sewing table make sure her pins aren't so thin they fall out.... thanks for the comment....

Really good video, excellent close-ups . I'm a meat eater and use the toothpick regularly. A 6mm magnet nests in the can opener, and can be used to magnify the straight pin or tweezers for a makeshift compass . Great knife !

Recently, I purchased the SAK huntsman. Looking to customize it in a few ways. First thing would be to add a sewing needle with some thread under the saw blade, and the straight pin. As for the tooth pick and/or picking ones teeth free of food particles after eating, I'll pass using it. Wooden tooth picks are a better option for those that still do it in private or public. I have used the SAK tooth pick for more of a light weight usage tool for placing tiny micro screws back in their deep hole slots, etc.

Regarding people not using toothpicks are restaurants anymore, I had no idea. Maybe it's a US thing? Or do you just wait until you get home to brush your teeth? I see toothpicks as something you can quickly use to get rid of something stuck in your teeth that is bothering you, before you have the chance to properly floss and brush them.

I don't know why everyone craps on the toothpick. It comes in handy all of the time when you need to MacGyver something, push a tiny reset button or watch button, or clean in between the tools on the Swiss Army Knife. And I can imagine if you're camping for multiple days and get something stuck in your teeth, you would appreciate it. Or even if you're at the office and realize you have something awkwardly stuck in your teeth that won't come out easily, it's a life saver. It's like the tweezers. You don't think about it often, but are glad it's there when needed. People talk about how it's not hygienic, but come on people, it's easy enough to clean and disinfect the thing before and after use.

I use the tooth pick quite a bit. Literally almost every time after I eat. People do use tooth picks still. lol why wouldn’t they? Literally a lot of restaurants still have them

I like the Huntsmen. Same tools except you have the corkscrew instead of the Phillips. And you can wrap a waxed fire tinder around the corkscrew which is specifically made for SAK. And you can buy a Fero rod that fits into the toothpick slot turning your SAK into an emergency fire-starting kit. Also, the Huntsmen and the Fieldmaster only have 9 actual tools that have multiple functions.

The pin can also be magnetized to make an emergency compass. Float it on some still water, or even just suspended it from a thread.

Sorry but you are wrong about the toothpick. I have slight gaps between my teeth and I’m always using a tooth pick. I know a lot of people that do. Otherwise the Fieldmaster is the best SAK IMO (I upgraded to the plus scales for the pen).

@readiysteadiy
@readiysteadiy 2 года назад
Thanks for thinking of it anyway… for the record there are 72 full length videos as of now - and 8 shorts…. RU-vid almost requests content creators make shorts but it seems a little troublesome from a viewers perspective - bit of a lousy workaround - but have you tried: replace /shorts/ from the URL with /watch?v= so you have a normal YT video format instead of the shorts?

Only problem with Swiss Army knives is the handle. Anything beyond light use will tear your hands up with all the little pinchy spots between the tools and also the plastic leaves and metal body they attach to. The red plastic leaves are only held on by two bent tabs of metal and this makes the plastic very prone to becoming loose and eventually falling off. Once they fall off the tool is like a cheese grater on your palm. It’s happened to me and I have read several survival stories with the same result. The Swiss army plier multi tool solves all those issues.
