Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the Fieldmaster Swiss Army Knife by the legendary company Victorinox. Perhaps you weren’t first introduced to the Swiss Army Knife by Angus MacGyver in the 1980’s hit television series “MacGyver”, but undoubtedly you have heard of them. The Fieldmaster comes with 10+ stainless steel tools to help you get the job done wherever you find yourself. While the Fieldmaster is slanted to more towards outdoor uses such as hiking, camping, bushcraft, fishing and general chores, Krik prefers it as an everyday carry regardless where he is headed. It has just enough tools to cover a wide base of activities, yet is small enough to carry everywhere you go and not be an inconvenience.

If you open the Philips Screwdriver, you will see a tiny hole in the scale at the base of the tool. This is where you can store a straight pin or perhaps a small sewing needle.

For years I had a Victorinox Rambler on my key chain, *by far* the most useful EDC item I carried. Excellent quality, and just the right tools for my purposes. I recently switched it for a Minichamp just for the heck of it, but I mounted Rambler scales to keep both toothpick and tweezers.

Had the Fisherman's model. It was the first knife I bought after saving up all of my birthday and Christmas money that year. Bought it in 5th grade (1980), and used it until I got the SwissChamp about 3 years ago. I use it for EDC, and like the corkscrew mainly because it holds the little screwdriver very securely (great for tightening up sun-glasses). Best knives around for the money, IMO. Great review, and thanks for sharing.

You're right about the SAK blades being sharp, and they stay that way through an amazing amount of wood carving and shaving, cutting, scraping, and other work. I like the Fieldmaster design - the saw blade looks like it means business for processing kindling and smaller branches for fuel. Nice demo.

The corkscrew is useful for loosening knots and holding the mini screwdriver accessory. Also the small screwdriver on the can opener can be used for Phillips. I have a Fieldmaster myself but would recommend a Huntsman.

Very good review. I just recently got a Victorinox Ranger Plus. I find that the extra tool that is a wood file, metal file, and hack saw adds very little weight and thickness for what you gain. And I like the cork screw since I have had one on my SAK for so many years. And it holds the eyeglasses screwdriver. The can opener works good as a Phillips. Mine also has a small ink pen in the scales. I have been a big SAK fan for a few decades and the Ranger IMCO is my an ideal belt carry SAK.

It's a fantastic knife! I lost my swiss camper pocket knife and went to Canadian tire to buy another one, they didn't have the camper but I saw a field master which had a Phillips screw driver. I thought it was way more practical than a wine cork screw. After making sure it had the saw I bought it and is my favorite model thus far.

Great Review... This is exactly the same knife as the Huntsman, except you get the Phillips head instead of the Huntsmans Cork Screw. The Phillips is handy, but I do like the Cork Screw because it houses the Mini Screw Driver which is also very handy, especially if you wear Glasses. The small flat screw driver on end of the Can Opener will fit most Phillips screws, although obviously not as good as a proper dedicated Phillips Screw Driver. So it swings and roundabouts really.

I have a Huntsman in matte burgundy color. The only difference is that the Huntsman has a corkscrew instead of the philips screwdriver (which I use to untie knots). Having used it for a few years in the city and in the woods, I think the Huntsman is the perfect medium sized SAK for both environments. That sheath is great!

I had the Huntsman when I was younger but I lost it some day. Now I just recently bought the Fieldmaster because I wanted the screwdriver over the corkscrew. Both are awesome tools and I like these models because theyre not too wide like some multi function tools tend to get if you go for too many tools.

Dude, the sheath you made is cool. I gave a Fieldmaster to my father in law and he carries it in a sheath similar to yours. I prefer to carry my Victorinox knives in the pocket though, with the exception of the Workchamp, which is bulkier. In the woods I'd rather carry all of them in a sheath, however.

Thanks, man! I was never a fan of Swiss Army Knives until about a week ago, when a friend gifted me his antique Boy Scout knife made in the 50’s. I was surprised how little time passed before I found myself being disappointed I didn’t have the extra tools that it offers. When I showed it off to my dad, he showed me his first camping knife, which included the saw and scissors. I knew immediately that I needed a knife with those tools, because I’ve done professional gardening in the past and it would be perfect for pruning and trimming. The camp knife my dad owns includes a fork and spoon that fold around the outside of the handle as an additional hobo knife feature. It got me wondering if there are any multi tool knifes with a spade instead of a spoon. Have you ever seen or heard of something like that? Do you know anyone who could custom make one?

I think they should get rid of the toothpick for a small ferrocerium rod, cause I can carve a toothpick. I mean they could offer the toothpick aftermarket, for the desk jockeys. Good review, thanks.
@williamkennison8920
@williamkennison8920 9 лет назад
A ferro rod wouldn't last nearly as long as the toothpick. I don't know about you but the toothpick and tweezers have served me well out in the bush for many years. Not just for sitting at a desk.
@shazzzam79
@shazzzam79 9 лет назад
I can honestly say I have never used the tooth pick. I would just carve one that would be considerably cleaner than the one in the knife. Now the tweezers I use constantly. A small ferro rod would like you say wear out... but the best survival knife is the knife you have on you at the time. I personally would like to be able to start fire with it.

I hate it when people say the best survival knife is the one you have on you at the time. Random knives do not appear in your pocket or on your belt by magic. The knife you have on you at the time is the knife you CHOOSE to have on you. If you go into the woods with a poor knife, you did a dumb thing and have no one but yourself t blame. It's also silly to go into the woods without a fire kit. That's a choice, too.

how does the awl compare to the farmer? my favorite model is the camper because it is thinner and i can live without scissors since the knife blade can do almost everything scissors can and i find that whenever i actually need scissors, i'm always in a place that has them. i've considered trying the farmer, which is even thinner than the camper. i think i would miss the toothpick and tweezers though. it seems there is just no perfect sak. maybe because there are so many options...

The Swiss Army Fieldmaster is my favourite Backpacking Knife with the absolute limit of weight to carry for the (usefulness) the tool offers. The Swiss Fieldmaster is great for outdoor and Urban tasks due to the Philips screwdriver and other screwdrivers and scissors, and mine has the pen and the pin included with having the Plus+ model ect. Not having the heavy pliers cuts weight and the tool is small and compact enough for the number of features and tools offers is superb. The Swiss army knives offer better pocket carry and backpacking usage because the knives are so compact and weight-friendly with been in pocket Knife design... The Swiss Army knives are the (original multitool) and stood the test of time as the original and the best... 👍👍👍 I love the Fieldmaster so much that I have purchased another Fieldmaster this time with the black scales and again the plus + model because you get the Pen and Pin included with the plus + model and choose the colour of the scales. Thank you so much for this excellent and superb review. you gave this Beautiful fieldmaster the review it rightly deserves.

i have a huntsman, everything the same, exept it has a corkscrew instead of screwdriver... wery usefull for making traps, tripwires, ect. you can just snip the wire with the scissors without moving the device or wire itself. I think they should make a tool for removing ticks and add it instead of toothpick or that hook in thiese models...

I don’t understand why there is a reamer with a hole in it on all these knives. How often is everybody sewing leather around here? I think the last time I did that was probably never.

I've had my Swiss Army since the mid 1980's. It's a slightly fatter version with the much laughed at cork screw...but...it has a magnifying glass and one can, with dry tinder, start a fire with it on a sunny day. It's true, it works. And living in the desert, I've used that glass in the field to find the almost invisible cactus "fur" spines, so I could remove them. And on one occasion, I actually opened a couple of bottles of wine with that cork screw. HA! If one does not have some version of the Swiss Army Knife, one should get one. In the back country or in town, I'm never without mine. And my statement here does I think qualify as a looooong term test. >;)

I believe that hook on the knife is to loosen tough knots ,, but don’t quote me on that,, obviously It serves many uses !!
