@@thesakguy3852 My favorite “Was” the Hercules, but I wanted less tools, weight and bulk for backpacking. This is ideal! I always prefer a Phillips to the cork screw. In Europe they must drink a lot of wine!🍷
The Leatherman nylon pouch that fits the OHT, Surge, etc. is a great carry option for the 130mm. I have this knife with serrations, in green. On Victorinox knives I the serrations like for general utility. Especially camping. Many other companies make truly crappy serrations. I find Victorinox serrations easy to touch up, if a little slower than a straight blade. No mystery at all. But preference is personal. Thanks!
I have a Surge in its pouch. Will have to dig it out and try it for the Rangergrip 78. I agree with you the the Victorinox serrations are the best. If I have to use a blade with them I would prefer the Victorinox.
I never thought about it. I just use my SAK serrated blade without thinking twice because it works very well every time without fail. And any blade that fades into the background without fuss is the best blade to have.
Just got my Ranger Grip 78, did not know about the shield being used to release the blade, been using my thumb nail at the base of the blade's pivot to release. Nice feature. The larger Firefly also JUST fits inside of the Altoids "Smalls" tin, making for a handy (little) fire kit to have in a pocket.
@@thesakguy3852 It does. And, with something solid to use for pushing, the large Firefly will insert to within almost 1/8" of seating all the way. I would bet that it wouldn't take much tweaking to get it to accept the large one. The toothpick may not want to anchor well afterwards... but the toothpick and large Firefly are the same length. Shaping the end of the Firefly to a point might do the trick.
Great review i ordered one of these for my general woods knife I have a victorinox hunter xt love it but it doesn't have all the tools I need this seems to be the ticket thanks for sharing
I like the Delemont(Wenger) OHO slimmer thumb hole better than the Vic OHO rounder thumb hole. I was saving up for a Fieldmaster, now the Rangergrip is calling my name. Lol. (Not that I would intentionally be a scoff law of Delaware's 3 inch blade limit). Thanks for sharing, Lewes kid.
I think my favorite thing is the button lock. Did not know that Delaware had a three inch limit. I was carrying it the whole time I was there. Thanks for the info will keep it in mind the next time I go out there.😉
Good review! i've been searching quite some time for a suitable knife and i think this is just perfect for my needs. also looking into that firefly upgrade. best wishes from the Netherlands
Pretty good review. Thanks! As you said, this is not a pocket knife. The only efficient way to carry this or its siblings is in a belt sheath. I also agree with you that the tweezers are one step above useless. There are also much better can openers out there. Leatherman's, for example. I happen to have the 79, which has the corkscrew instead of the Phillips. My friends and I enjoy wine and I always carry one of the Tinkers, so I have the Philips covered. Now for the really good parts. The knife may not be made of the "best" steel, but it'll take a beating and is really easy to hone. The saw is an absolute beast. All that said, the 79 isn't my EDC tool. It's the 61, which doesn't have the saw. It has everything I need and nothing that I don't.
I will probably buy this knife for my next camping trip, but a pouch is needed. I'm also a believer in the Firefly replacement of the toothpick...one of the easiest mods on the market, and maybe the most useful. But I think that I will buy the Victorynox, not the Victornox, LOL !! ( Our secret, it's really a Wenger).
I like the size for a hiking knife. As much as I like small knives , my age has me needing larger tools for my hands. When I come visit I’d like to see this one. Might be a good addition to my Wanderers Bag
There's belt pouches by Victorinox specifically for the Ranger Grips, I've ordered a leather one for my 78 Hunter but have to wait they seem pretty popular.
I made a belt pouch for mine out of some scrap leather I had that works for me. Did not know that Victorinox made one will have to check that out. Thanks.
If I am camping it's size would not be a problem as I would not have that much in my pockets. I am looking to make a pouch for it to carry it. Thanks for the comment Bart.🙂👍
The Firefly doesn't fit. I had to break a bit of the end off of mine to make it work. Not the end of the world, but certainly important to note. The tool is great & I do like the Firefly. Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed your perspective.
It was a month or two after this video that I got a Firefly for this knife and found that it did not fit. Did not think of breaking a small part off and see how it works. I do like having that as a backup. Thanks for the tip
I have this knife, I skin and gut with it. The saw is good on bone. I carry this knife on a toggle I hang off a belt, I make my toggles, they go through the ring and is one hand retrieve from the toggle
@@thesakguy3852 wliwni thanks, your review helped me to decide to buy that knife... that saw makes great notches for bushcrafting. My only complaint is, it is hard to clean out the blood. I kill and eat lots of my meat. I lived off grid, dry cabin, no gas, only wood to cook or heat, hand pumped well water. I depend on knives, the life time warranty makes it a good deal. I make toggles out of bamboo skewers and artificial sinew, and 550 cord loop for belt.. very light
@@mayamachine glad my review helped. The one time I used it to process a deer had to use lots of hot water and a lot of qtips to clean it. For basic yard and camp stuff it is a great knife. Living off grid you need good gear.
@@JayLikesKnives Been using Victorinox saws for almost 50 years. Cutting wood for walking sticks. Absolutely no need for a lock on the saw. Not a problem. Never heard a dedicated Vic saw user complain about the saw! Hope this helps a bit. It is a true gem of a pocket knife.
