Experience the excitement and historic moments from the 1998 ICC Knock-Out Trophy, officially known as the Wills International Cup. Held in Bangladesh, this One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament was the first to involve all Test-playing nations outside of the World Cup, setting the stage for what is now known as the ICC Champions Trophy.
The tournament featured thrilling matches, including New Zealand's victory over Zimbabwe in the pre-quarter-final to qualify for the main knockout stage. The competition culminated in a memorable final where South Africa defeated the West Indies to claim their first major tournament title.
Tournament Overview:
Format: The tournament was held in a direct knock-out format involving all Test-playing countries at the time. Due to nine eligible teams, New Zealand and Zimbabwe played a qualifier to determine the final eight teams.
Objective: Conceived by the ICC to raise funds for developing cricket in non-Test playing countries, the tournament was also aimed at promoting the game in Bangladesh.
Key Matches:
Semi-Finals:
South Africa vs. Sri Lanka: Jacques Kallis led South Africa to victory with an unbeaten 113 runs and 5 wickets, earning him the Man of the Match award.
West Indies vs. India: A strong performance by Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dillon's 3-wicket haul guided the West Indies to a win, with Dillon being named Man of the Match.
Final:
South Africa vs. West Indies: Kallis's all-round performance (37 runs and 5 wickets for 30 runs) and key contributions from Hansie Cronje and Mike Rindel secured South Africa's win. Kallis was named Man of the Match and Man of the Tournament for his stellar performances throughout the event.
Highlights:
Jacques Kallis's Dominance: Watch Kallis's incredible all-round display that earned him both Man of the Match in the final and Man of the Tournament.
Historic Moments: Relive the key matches, including South Africa's semi-final win over Sri Lanka and the nail-biting final against the West Indies.
Tournament Legacy: Understand the significance of the inaugural ICC KnockOut Trophy in paving the way for future ICC Champions Trophy editions.
Join us in celebrating South Africa's historic win and the memorable moments of the 1998 ICC Knock-Out Trophy, a tournament that left a lasting legacy in the world of cricket.

Hensie was a Gem. He was 100 times better captain than Steve wuagh. That was the time when south Africa was the toughest side.

Every team was good... Even Kenya was not so bad...even contest between bat and ball... No boring cricket like today were batsman is making merry... Kohli is hitting century if not getting out by 20s or 30s.. So easy for batsman to score centuries and getting 350+...till 2011 Cricket was competitive but still loosing teams from cricket like Zimbabwe and Kenya

Hansie cronje greatest captain ever in cricket
@ojayadev
One Day Cricket at its best. Even totals above 240 were challenging to chase unlike today where even 350 is not enough. Spinners had the skill of getting batsmen commit to the wrong shot.

many thanks for the upload.1998-99 season was an unprecedented one for India. After loosing captaincy Sachin was free of pressure and he cut loose. India won many tournaments that year and this loss to West Indies was unexpected. Had the similar feeling when we lost to them in 2016 T20 world cup.
