A nation’s up in arms but Emmanuel Macron still fancies his chances. By turning passage of a very unpopular pension reform bill into a vote of confidence, the French president convinced enough conservatives to avoid bringing down the government, but it was close. Nine votes. We ask about the lasting impact on the rest of Macron’s term-limited four years in office.

I think it's the desperate manner in which Macron pushed through the bill that angers and worries people more than the bill itself. Here in the US the retirement age is 67 and rising. 64 is hardly unreasonable or draconian.

Just because the oligarchy bleeds the workers dry in the US, doesn't mean France should bow to the top. Try being a manual laborer working to the bone at age 64. Too few have sucked the world dry.

France provides generous social safety net programs to its population. These social programs are very expensive and Macron acted like a responsible adult, making it clear that this retirement reform is necessary to keep these programs solvent. Money doesn’t grow on trees and nothing is free in life. Unless left wing and extreme right wing assembly representatives want France to go down the path to becoming Greece.

Except in France's case, the COR, the body supposed to study pensions, determined that there was no need for such reforms, especially with the amount that French pay for pensions.

I imagine it’s the same as it is in the US where they raid the retirement fund for wars, etc., then lament that the program can’t survive when the birth rate decreases. It’s a ponzi scheme. They should remove these funds from the general fund and put them in interest bearing accounts. By the time people retire, they’ll have plenty.

The opposition may stir up the French electorate all they want, but they fail to come up with a single viable plan to saveguard the pensions system's future sustainability. It's a politician's duty to take the necessary policy measures, even if they're unpopular among the electorate. Macron's reform bill may be unpopular, but it is what the pension system needs to save it from future collapse. Yes, the medicine is harsh, but the patient requires it.

We will see does democracy win or democracy is not working in France. Majority don't want the reform, that's fact. Forcing it is not democracy.
@jonasv.c.8924

@@cinpeace353 Look, the majority in the National Assembly should take a good look at themselves and ask what the hell they think they're doing. On the one hand they don't want Macron's reform bill, but on the other hand they have no vision or talent to come with a better reform proposal. On the one hand they're outraged when the government uses a special constitutional escape route to break the deadlock, but on the other hand they can't even agree on a motion of no-confidence to topple the government when given the chance. Macron is doing what's necessary to save your children's and grandchildren's pensions but you're all too focused on your own personal comfort to care about the next generations' pensions. "Après-nous, le deluge!" You should be ashamed!

36 hour work week is ridiculous already. Retiring at 55? Certainly unsustainable for any country. The burden is unfairly on the young generation.
@Trueroot

French are retiring at 62 at the earliest except most people don't retire at that age to get bonuses during their pensions. The body studying this showed that there were no need for such reform. There is no pression on younger generations, merely one on the actual because of the pandemy and all the taxes that Macron cut.

My proposal is to have the base retirement age sets at 60 years old; 55 years old for those in "physically challenging" jobs. With a 35 years contribution, and 1,000€/month minimum pension. Then those needing to contribute more for various reasons will individually decide to keep working over those ages, taking advantage of a government program that protects employment for Seniors (over 50 years old). We must also put in place policies that encourage healthy adults to work. Too many seat at home, taking advantage of the welfare system these days 😡😡😮

You cant put China andn the US in the same cast - worlds apart . China want her people to be able to enjoy their retirement . In China, women retire at 55, men at 60. Some might wish to extend working for 2 more years but not longer. And they will own their own homes the govt. had helped to renovate.

After working long and hard 12-14 hour a day-sometimes even more-I want to have some rest and enjoy life along my little kids and family. How performant are we after 60?? In the morning the people is just hopping for another painless day and not to suffer too much due to the body degradation. Do you have any ideea about all those pains and ilnesses coming with the age? Do you thing that those old men and women working until 65 or longer, are really willing to do it? Look at them how they are forced to work longer because their pension is miserable and cannot afford to pay their medication. Do they look happy?? No! They are not. Of course, I 'm talking about hard workers, not about country's leaders..

Lot of Americans were pushing harder by the government, retirement age of 67. Do you understand the pressure of trying to be employed after 60 even you are healthy? Their social security is so minimal that is hard for everyone. Let them to compete to stay number one, Americans are not happy in general.

This reform pulling retirement age up only on 2 years. Aging trend in society will continue and you should raise the bar again and again. It's not the solution, just delaying. Real solution is the radical increasing of labour effectiveness and enhancing the HEALTHY lifeterm of people. I'm not French, but heard the statistics, that 25% of workers don't live up to retirement age. So, this is not reform, just procrastination.
@Trueroot

The French, like most of their fellow Europeans, are obsessed with their bedtime stories by Artur de Gobineau. Democracy just died in France. Moreover France continues to waste tens of billions of euros on continuing with its colonialism by illegally occupying territories and looted wealth instead of focussing on its citizens in France metropolitan. The French continue to illegally 121 Polynesian Islands which include Tahiti, Windward Islands, Leeward Islands, Gambier Islands, Marquesas Islands, Austral Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago apart from Réunion, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyane, Mayotte, New Caledonia, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Wallis and Futuna, Southern and Clipperton Island, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Adélie Land, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Saint Paul and Amsterdam Islands, Scattered Islands. Gold mines in France produces roughly 1.5 tons of gold a year. Even if we take two centuries, it would add up to only 300 tons. And yet, France holds 2500 tons of gold, the rest being looted from the rest of the world.
