I love the fact that with all the modern technology being brought into amps with midi switching and all these great features there is still a market for simple stuff like this.
Captain, I think he may have meant British brands.Anyway, I don't know of another brand who make lunchbox amplifiers in Britain either. Great demo anyway.
Seems as though I got to comment early. Just like to say that i've been following you guys for around 2 years, and keep on making my nights after uni enjoyable. Love from Australia
Alex, way to generalize. Strat players could say that les Paul's sound sterile and the same, if they didn't like les Paul's. Don't generalize guitar types or such. There is a reason why so many strats are made daily worldwide, people buy them. Same for Gibsons, PRS, ibanez... People associate certain guitars with a certain sound, and that keeps people from "finding" the guitar that was meant for them, sometimes.
Came up from South Wales to Andertons yesterday and bought one of these V40's. Great amp with a massive sound, really surprised me. Shop was great and will be going again in the near future!
Fender finally stepped up and started putting in decent sounding pickups in their Squier "Classic Vibe" Squires, they're almost as good as the Alnico V pickups you can pick up for $30 a set on eBay, but the one Rob is playing looks to have a Seymour Duncan logo on them.
orlock20 Okay that makes sense, I thought it looked like it had a scalloped neck, but I thought maybe it was just the lighting, however now that you mentioned it I remember him getting the neck on it scalloped.
Ben Jones That's why it sounds more like an American Strat than a Squier, but in all honestly the pickups in the Classic Vibe 60s aren't that bad, they sound like the TexMex Pickups, they might even be the TexMex pickups
Hearing that V40 getting properly woken up by the Les Paul just reminds me of the strange fact that Les Paul was the jazz player who created (with Gibson) quite possibly the worlds best rock guitar.
Was skeptical at the start of the video..haven't heard the v30s so knew nothing...and this video simply blew me...loved the tones...I like a single channel amp..don't know they just feel more fun to play around with. ..if only these weren't so expensive. .will buy em some day...nice review guys :-)
YES YES YES Capt! We're so all waiting for your debut album "One Up The Middle"!!! (With the Phil X guest track!!) DO IT MAN SOOO DO IT PLLLLLEEEEEEAAAAASSE?
Quite interesting and revealing demo that shows us that this V40 lets us hear the strat with a strat sound, with a world of metalloid transients and harmonics (and not some cheap cardboard mish mash festival). A real joy impossible to forget.
Hey Rob, just wanted to let you know that as I was browsing around to find the nearest Victory Amps dealer, I ended rabbit-trailing onto the bestselling guitar page on RiffCity's website. With one exception, Chapman guitars is taking up the entire first page! Huge congrats on the success mate!
Playing the one in the shop, we noticed the "Low" mode seemed to add a bit of gain? Or better put, the sort of clean just breaking up in high seemed to be over the edge and in the broken up section. Wasn't sure if that was just because we were hitting the strings harder because the volume was lower, but it did add something. It is a fantastic amp that can do almost everything you would ever want and not need to faff with numerous channels.
This morning I posted a message on the Captain's Facebook page asking him if they could do a review of the V40, and this afternoon it appears on RU-vid - that's what I call customer service! :) I tried this amp - probably that very box - in Anderton's just after Christmas and I love the tone. It's so clear, and although Rob and the Captain didn't do much with pedals in this video (unfortunately), I'm sure that it's a wonderful amp to run pedals through. The only downside is that it's very unforgiving - you can hear everything that's going on, like any of the other strings that you brush accidentally, which I noticed in the video. I have a DT25 and this is the first amp that's really tempting me to add to that. If I was on the lookout for my main amp, this one would be on its way to me right now. Incidentally, I also tried a PRS Hollowbody last week and I reckon that would sound wonderful through the V40. Captain Lee, why don't you sell the hollowbodies? It's a beautiful (-sounding) guitar!
Chaps n Caps - hope you and your families had a great holiday break. Would love to see you two do a video comparing different acoustic guitar piezo/direct tones and options (possibly including related acoustic floor effects and acoustic amps)
I would never and I stress NEVER mess up that glorious tone with some effects lol that intro tone with chappers on the strat, I mean thats it man, that is THE SOUND for me lol perfect tone, almost like an older fender super sonic, my favorite amp of all time beside a dumble super overdrive :p
I've just spent the day playing this amp and Andertons and fuck me this amp is incredible! I've just ordered a head and cab and can't wait for it to arrive! \m/
Please do a video where you each build a pedalboard for a certain amount of money(including power supplies) and then you compare them through different amps..
Oohh I also shielded the cavity and attached and aluminium plate to the inside of the scratch plate. Almost noiseless. It makes all the pick up options usable even with overdrive :D
I guess the Cap'n is a total Strat to LP convert now, huh? Now that's my kinda amp! I like to plug in, peg everything in the preamp section, set the power amp section as high as the room can stand, nice guitar straight in, and control the breakup with the guitar's volume knob and my fingers. Sweet. I even have some amps with a single knob!
CaptAnderton They're both great guitars, I love them both too, but if I had to pick one it would be a Les Paul, there's a few things that are just perfect with a Stratocaster and a Telecaster, and everything else is just better with a Les Paul.
This may sound ridiculous, but the Randall Diavlo has a ridiculous transparent clean channel that would also make a great pedal platform to go along with a great fx loop. I would love to see you guys put it through a versatility test with a bunch of pedals like this.
Hi Rob, could you guys do a video on the new VOX Nighttrain heads? They seem to be a lot of fun and your demos always give a good overview of the product's ins and outs :)
how does this compare to say a hot rod deluxe? (seeing as its Lee's go to amp for testing other stuff) theres only so much a video can give, sound wise of course :( id love to try one out.
Please, make a video running the two ML-3 models into this. It would be very cool to hear just how much more the amp is driven by the Passive Aggressive humbuckers.
I like the videos, but if I could make a suggestion, please show what every amp sounds like cranked. You have a soundproofed studio like room, and I'm sure the wherewithal to do sound level editing. I know most don't usually play with volume maxed, but you really should know what an amp sounds like when power tubes are pushed to get the total character of the amp. I remember a few years ago, I didn't really like Orange amps. Then I got to really play one in a place I could open it up and now I can't live without one in my setup. Just an idea, no disrespect meant.
Rob Chapman So i was hoping you could help me out with a question. So i can get a peavey valveking for $200 a peavey JSX for $600 and a Dual Rectifier for $900. Which is the most versatile or just better overall? What would you recommend getting?
I love this channel! You're hysterical and amazingly talented, hopeful one day I'll be 1/2 as good a player as you... Rob, I'm hoping you can help me. I'm looking for an ultra thin neck guitar that sounds and plays great. And by ultra thin I mean ultra thin, I have really short fingers...I don't know if you do custom work (Chapman Guitars) or know someone who does. I currently have a 3/4 size Squier, but I'm looking for a really good guitar, that sounds really great. I'm hoping to get a guitar with a neck width of 1 3/4" at the 12th fret...Do you have any ideas? Thanks for your time mate...
+santiago rodriguez (LightWhisperer1) i know Chapman dont do custom built guitars yet...if thin neck is your thing then look no further the Ibanez...Ibanez has the thinest necks on the market, they are called "Wizard 3"...obviously not ALL Ibanez are thin, but mostly the RG range have very thin necks..
more like! hermoso (clean) limpio tiene ese amplificador , me sorprende! pd: linda squier escalopeada (scaloped?) muy bonita guitarra ,suena muy bien! saludos tu friend de Argentina Gonzalo Ledesma :)
Coolest video EVER! These cats got in a time machine, went to the summer of 2015 and made pedal boards for this video. AWESOME!! 😆 Forgive me Rob and Lee. I realize there was a typo there guys. But, I could not resist and had to poke fun.
EDIT: you did crank this amp so we could hear the power tube overdrive character of the sound. Thank you, I spoke too soon on this video, was going off of others, sorry.
So rob I currently have a dark Terror which I am very much enjoying and I was thinking about picking up a duchess to run live for cleans as the DT is one channel. Thoughts?
Hey lee . I reckon you would love to play my squire. I did the opposite to you. I didn't change the pickups. Just the wires ,pots , swicth and cap. It sounds great, I was shocked. It's a Chinese 2000 model. These guitars can sound amazing with a small amount of work.
Any chance you could try out the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister heads? I'm thinking of purchasing one but the reviews on RU-vid are quite limited so if you could would be appreciated. Btw love the licks keep up the good work both of youse! :)
I'm a bit unsure if I should get the V30 or the V40. I'm currently owning a Marshall Vintage Modern and I love it's Hard Rock and 80's Metal tones when pushed with a nice OD pedal (that's what I normally do with it). But I'm looking for something a bit more portable. I love the concept of one channel and using the guitars volume knob and a bit of push before the amp. The V40 seems to be able to deliver some of these late 70's dirt on it's own. Any suggestion?
Well this is Damn pricy so if ur willing to pay than by all means go and play! But there are things like the tiny terror or the blackstar ht 5 (the ht 5 can do everything) that would work too.
Hey rob and lee, im just a student so kinda poor, i love guitar playing and everything comes with it ( pedals, amps...) im wondering what could be a good beginning valve amp.
hosenpupsi123 Dunno about the 5. The power valve is a 12BH7 which is really a pre-amp valve. It must work well because otherwise they wouldn't sell it, but the power soak is 5W or off, the TM18 has 18W - 5W - 1W - off... Obviously budget plays a part though.
Which of the Victory amps are PCB and which are handwired? I thought they were all handwired. I only ask because I was interested in which Victory amps were most like my Roadhouse 30, which I think is stellar for the money.
Wow, wait a sec...that Strat is a Squier? Damn, I thought it was a Fender Custom Shop untill I saw the headstock in close up...f*cking spot on. Edit: reading the comments reminded me of the video it was modded in (together with the LTD Tele)...still, it really shows that spending 3k on a guitar these days is just insane :)
I was able to try out this amp in the store (thanks to very helpful and informed staff!). I have been listening to various vids covering the subtle differences between different types of power amp valves. it would be great if you could swap the as supplied vavlves and put in 6L6 for a comparsion test? I think I'm going to buy this head, but is it even sweeter sounding with 6L6s?
+Stephen Smith In the v30 review they said they had to blind test the amps and not know what tubes were in them. They preferred the EL34's over the 6l6's on the V40, and the 6l6 over the EL34 over the v30. Plus Lee was involved in the testing of V40, so it has a touch of Lee bluesiness that everyone loves and adores, no need to ruin that with other valves!
