vICU service in Far West LHD
The new virtual intensive care service - which links critically ill patients and clinicians in Far West LHD with RPA (Royal Prince Alfred hospital) specialists in Sydney LHD - has been up and running successfully for over a month now.
You can watch our video explaining what it is and how it works.
The 24/7 service - called vICU - will allow the FWLHD to manage critically ill patients effective and safely, reduce the likelihood of patients being transported to city hospitals, and help upskill and retain specialist clinicians in remote NSW.
It uses remote monitoring and video conferencing to connect clinicians, patients and carers in Broken Hill with intensive care staff at RPA and RPAVirtual. Staff at RPA can access electronic medical records and test results for Broken Hill patients and provide real-time advice and support to our clinicians in Far West.
The vICU service was officially launched last month in Broken Hill Health Service, at which the NSW Government also announced $10 million has been set aside to reconfigure the Emergency Department to better meet the critical health needs of the region. The NSW Government is also upgrading the mental health unit at Broken Hill Health Service, delivering a modern therapeutic space with co-designed facilities by people with lived experience.
