It HAS always BEEN a great camera, if you were ok with using manual focus in video mode. NOW it's just a great camera.
This Video shows you what the video AF of the firmware Version 2.0 can do and what it struggles with. The earlier versions of this camera you couldn't use to vlog. With this version it is possible. The AF isn't as good as a phase detect system, but it is workable and might be worth your while checking out, because on top of that AF system you're getting 4k @ 100Mbit/s, external audio, a tilt-svivel screen, a small form factor and an unbeatable pricepoint.

Just bought my G7 last week and have been putting it to work. It's my first real camera and I love it. I've found myself using manual focus a whole lot more than I'd like to, but it's the only way I've been able to ensure focus. I don't even know what firmware I have on mine. Good video and test.

Thanks, Mike Branch! Much appreciate the nice comment! It's a crazy good camera at that price point. If you're into videography in general, more so than vlogging per se and you are used to and willing to put time in for getting the shot, it delivers practically the best quality of any camera I know at 500 bucks. Greetings!

Hey, Building Sherrif:) Well the AF on the 70D is far better, the G7 can't compete in that area. It is less bulky though and does shoot 4k..... What kind of videography do you want to do? Have you looked at the upcoming EOS M6? 70D AF system, but compact mirrorless form factor.... Greetings!

By far, one of the best videos demonstrating all the modes of autofocus with the G7. It seems pretty damn decent. So much of what I read and see, says the G7 is terrible with autofocus. I don't know.. for a 4-year old video, seems pretty damn ok. Any current thoughts (Feb 2021)? Thanks!
@SkeleCrafteronYT
@SkeleCrafteronYT 2 года назад
As a G7 owner for many years, the autofocus is bad. It constantly misses and hunts for the focus point and often messes up the clarity of the shot. But if you're willing to help the camera by half pressing the shutter while recording and using manual focus where possible, it is a nice camera.

Great video :) I am having some serious trouble choosing between a Nikon D5300 and a Panasonic Lumix G7. I make videos standing infront of a camera like you but I can't decide which would be better! Thank you for the video!
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Thanks, Stay Interested! If that is what you predominantly do thenI would go with the G7, because of its 4k capability. I believe this is what sets it apart here. The D5300 has phase detection Af, but only through the viewfinder, not in live view mode, which is what you will use when doing videos like the ones you mentioned. Also the feature set on the panasonic is far more advanced in my opinion. In my mind it is the better video camera of the two and better suited for what you want to do. Both have tilt svivel screen, mic input and don't overheat, so in these regards they're pretty much the same. The D5300 has the bigger sensor, but the G7 has the better processing, so although the D5300 will be better in lowlight, the G7, being able to pull off a 4k 1080p downscale will be up to par with the results you will get from the D5300. But if you're shooting at home, with artificial lights I assume, then the lowlight performance isn't very important. For these reasons I would go with the G7. Hope that helps you out a little. More questions, just ask... greetings!.

Nice video. Just ordered the G7. Currently we are using the Sony A6000 and as you know the autofocus on the Sony is unbelievable. I was looking for a camera with a mic input and the G7 seems like the best camera for it's price range. Also a negative on the Sony, when recording in 60p it overheats within 15-20 minutes of recording so have been limited to recording in 30p unless I wanted to stop and start recording depending on how long we are going.
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Fun With The Bugs:) Sonys are awesome, unfortunatelly if you want one to vlog that has great autofocus but doesn't overheat, you're left with the A7R2(maybe A72...) and the 16 35 ......which hurts the wallet ...or actually kills it:)))) No overheating, great focus, but bulky....Canon. Great AF, small form factor, but overheating....Sony. Small form factor, no overheating, but mediocre AF....Panasonic. and so on.....then again if somebody made the perfect camera they'd all go out of business.... The G7 is a pretty good vlogging camera....the panasonic 12 32 is a wide angle that comes with a relatively decent price tag, but if you're willing to spend some money the 7 14 from panasonic is ridiculous....I can't afford it but I still have it, because I just fell in love right away....gonna do a vlog soon with the g7 only. The AF performance will propably be a bummer at first coming from a sony, but if you get used to it, you get a great feature rich video centric camera at a very good price point as you said. Get a deal with a good return policy in case you start feeling homesick for the sony AF:) Greetings!
@FunWithTheBugs
@FunWithTheBugs 7 лет назад
We used to do vlogs on our channel but have stopped doing them and actually removed most of them from our channel to keep the focus on being a kids channel. So most of the stuff we do now is placing the camera on a tripod. Occasionally we will do a video like in a park reviewing RC cars or something like that so it is like a vlog type of video. Another thing that I was not happy with was the image stabilization on the A6000. It was almost non existent. If I am not happy with the G7 I won't be able to go back to the Sony. It sold within 10 minutes of me placing it for sale. LOL Besides the G7 I didn't really see any other good options in the $500 - $700 range. That would have been a better option. I was thinking about the Canon G7X Mark II but I really didn't want a point and shoot and I also don't believe it had a mic input. If the G7 doesn't live up to my satisfaction, any other camera's in that price that would possibly be a better choice? I am really hoping the G7 works out. I only played with it for a little bit and it seems like it's going to be solid.
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey:) I foyu place it on a tripod like in the OOSHIES -Video, then you can rely on manual focus if you step the lens down to say a 5.6 you should get decent depht of field....for the RC car reviews, maybe the focus will be too slow in some situations, but check out the 12 32 panasonic....it's a decent price, and a relatively quick lens...AF noise is a problem though with full hd video recording....it's in the video if you haven't seen that part yet.... have you checked out the Canon EOS M3....or the M6 that is going to be released as a successor? As far as the G7 goes I am really falling in love with it right now because i used it to vlog when I was moving the last two weeks...I put the 7 14 panasonic on it though which pretty much anihilated the wallet:))) but it's a damn good lens.... Hope the g7 fits your videographic needs.....it's a damn good camera, if it fits ones shoting style... Greetings!
@FunWithTheBugs
@FunWithTheBugs 7 лет назад
+TubeNoob I was watching some videos yesterday and was actually thinking about trying manual focus. Never messed with manual settings before so it will definitely be a learning curve. So you are saying to set the aperture to 5.6? Appreciate all the help man. Also excited to try recording in 4K for clearer cropping and zooming in the video as I will still render in 1080p. Really want to make this camera work. Subbed your channel too. Oh, is the AF noise a problem when using an external mic?
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey:) Well it really depends on the situations and the distances, but stepping the lens down will give you more room to move. For example if you're shooting say a 50mm 1.8 prime lens on a crop factor canon camera and you're about 7 feet away from the camera you got like 10-12 cm range of actual 100% sharpness. So leaning back in your chair for example, with manual focus, then puts you out of focus. Step down to a 5.6 you got 40 cm of range....that's what I mean...but you'll quickly get the hang of it....just test it a little. More distance between camera and subject, higher f stop or lower mm range -> more depth of field. simple actually. Shooting 4k and rendering to 1080p is a really good idea. Crisp video and the cropping can really save your behind:) It often saved mine...haha.... Nice to hear from you! Subbed as well!

It is a thunderbolt capture card. It captures the G7 hdmi output which is 1080p 25 and I only use it to get the cam in to my stream. For the other cams I use the ATEM TVS switcher (also a Blackmagic Design product). The ATEM cannot se 1080p 25 only 1080 50i. Im only an amateur just playing around with the gear and have no serious stuff uploaded at this point just a bunch of clips from learning how to use the cams and the gear. Thats why I depend on you guys thats ben doing video and photography for a while (gives me some really nice shortcuts lol). Thanks again

Thank you for this video @Tubenoob. I've been debating getting the G7, but all the complaints about slow AF and hunting worried me. Quick question if you do not mind; you said you're using the Panny 12-32 glass. Can the kit lens (14-42mm) achieve these same quick AF results after tweaking settings?
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Jared! You're welcome! I know the 12 32 is faster than the 2011 normal version of the 14 42 kitlens, because that's the one I had before. From looking at the specs the pancake 14 42 powerzoom option might be as fast as the 12 32, because they have the same stepping motor I believe, or one that is similar to that one in the 12 32. The 14 42 2014 version seems to have pretty fast AF too. To shorten this. The 12 32 IS DEFINITELY A LOT faster than the 2011 version of the regular kit lens. 2014 version of the regular lens and the pancake power zoom option of the kit lens, looking at the specs and internal electronics used, should be comparably fast in video mode as the 12 32. Hope that helps you out! Greetings!
@davedonovan2681
@davedonovan2681 6 лет назад
great video! are there any cameras with faster AF that you'd recommend for vlogging/ film making, while still having an audio jack and possibly image stabilization, for under $1000?
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Hey, David Donovan! Mh......the EOS M6 is right below a grand and pretty damn good for vlogging. Sony A6300....but overheating can be an issue if your shooting style entails long takes. You have to use a stabilized lenses with these two...neither have stabilization built into the body.....sony does not have a tilt svivel screen, but I will do a video on not a stellar, but an ok workaround soon.... The M6 is better for vlogging, the Sony has more features for designing shots like focus peaking. But none of them are as feature rich as the panasonic. Hope that helps you out a little. More questions? Just ask. Greetings

Just received my g7 after using a sony a6000 iam blown away by this camera. They a6000 is a really good camera with snappy autofocus but at low light it hunts around sometimes no mic jack hard to see screen in sunlight does not flip around no 4k or even 2.7k .The sony does have A high bit rate 1080p xavsc 50mbps that looks good though. The lenses are ridiculously expensive for e-mount the sony has a slight edge in extremly low light like star pics though. The screen on the g7 is amazing so is the view finder . Hey, Gaston! Thanks, great to hear it! The lightest setup I can think of is using an edutige etm 008 for a mic, like in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4sSvPTE5IMA.html Also works for the Panasonic G7. And then use the 12 32 pancake lens from panasonic. Don't think it gets lighter than that. What do you think should be different indoors? Greetings!

Ahhh....noe I get it, my brain functioned a little slow that day I guess:) Mh...one big ring light will give you a very nice lighting as well, like the Neewer Camera Photo/Video 18 inches/48 centimeters Outer 55W 240 Pieces LED SMD Ring Light 5500K Dimmable Ring Video Light Search on amazon. That would be my recommendation for talking head stuff inside in a vlog type fashion of shooting video. Simple setup, cool reflections in the eyes, and a decent amount of light for 100 USD. Every good three point lighting for video with a decent life span and decent overall quality is at least going to be three times that in my experience. Then again.... Do you have a lot space to light, or how much space do you want to light?

Another excellent video my friend. You got yourself a new subscriber! I have the Canon 80D and I've been looking for a smaller and lighter alternative for vlogging/photography/general video work. Despite being so large and heavy, I haven't found anything which can match the 80D's dual pixel af and build quality. I also already have a few nice STM lenses, including the very useful 10-22mm wide angle which would be expensive to replace in another system e.g. M43. I know a lot of people rave about Sony, but they lack useability and the decent lenses are pricey and big. I was tempted by the new Canon M5 but the I don't like the screen which flips down, people have reported build quality issues and it seems expensive for what it is at the moment. Maybe the next generation will convince me to go mirrorless. By the way, what are your thoughts on Panasonic's new G85? Regards from Australia 👍🏼
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Thanks, man! Yep, dual pixel af + stm lens rules supreme in that price category, the only ones that are equally as good in my opinion are the sonys, but...no tilt svivel screen and the overheating.....makes me sad just thinking about it again...:) yeah f2.8s by sony are way too expensive...it's almost rediculous imho....it's still a problem...if it doesn#t overheat it's big, if the af is awesome it is either too big or it does overheat, if it has all that it lacks a tilt svivel screen......put a phase detect in the g7 and it's done...:) but we just don't live in a perfect word...lol:) Haven't tested the G85, but it's the exact same AF system and internal processing can only do so much. Allthough that can be quite a difference I have to admit, after testing this firmware 2.0 version of the g7....so maybe there's something going on there...:).....I do like the in-built stabilization, but what they improved apart from that (more tele, more wide angle reach with the kit lens, faster jpeg buffer and no anti-aliasing) helps photographers more than it does videographers I think..... If they built a tilt svivel screen into the a7rII I'd sell everything and get one plus the 16-35 and a metabones adapter....ahhahahah......*** dreams:) Greetings from Germany!

Hey, Sassy.never.Trashy! Either you use regular face tracking mode or 1 Area AF with the focus area fitted to your head. Sometimes face recognition has trouble locking on if you don't look into the camera straight, since it is looking for two eyes and a mouth shape. I am pretty sure that 1 area AF is the best and most simple choice for you. Let me know how it goes. More questions?Just ask. Greetings!

thanks dude, this vedic helped me a lot! Would you say using a Steadicam can somehow offset the weakness of G7? I'm considering buying this camera, but to have a stable footage, G7 needs a stabilizer which is cheaper than the price gap between G7 and G85.
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Zei Ya! What do you mean by weakness? You can use a stabilized lens for example....by steadicam, do you mean an actual real steadicam? because these are of course great but also insanely expensive.....you*re probably talking about a gimbal, right? A gimbal will give you far better results than any kind of lens or body stabilization ever could, that*s for sure. Except maybe if you*re buying a really cheap one. But even then it is probably better than lens or body stabilization. Did I answer your question or have I understood you wrong? Greetings!

Hi, thank you sooo much for your response! You're right and I was talking about the instability of the G7 compared to G85. And I wanna get a gear like the Yelangu s60t to make my G7 more stable, while the overall price is lower than the G85. So in that case, the body and lens stabilization don't seem to matter too much right? How would you recommend the lens for the G7? the 12-32mm one? I think the quality is pretty good according to your video. And I heard the lens has stabilization. Is that true? Thanks!

I was watching another channel (can't remember which one) reviewing the auto focusing capabilities of the G7. The guy believes that part of the reason why the G7 is slower at 4K is because the amount of data basically overwhelms the processor. That's why when shooting at 1080 30fps/25fps auto focusing is faster as there is 4 times less data. Additionally, shooting at 1080 60fps/50fps is faster because the processor is being updated twice as fast so focusing is not bad. I don't think that there is a fix to significantly improve the auto focusing speed when shooting in 4k.

Hey TubeNoob! I have a question that hopefully you can answer. I currently have a Canon T7i (800D) and the autofocus is brilliant. So far from what I've seen Canon in general has top notch autofocus capabilities. Lately, I've been trying to think about a 4K camera. Canon's cheapest 4K camera that I'm aware of is the 5D Mark IV, which looks really good, although very expensive. Would you say that the Lumix G7 could compare to the 5DMIV? In other words would it be more beneficial to save for the 5DMIV (sticking with Canon) or is the G7 better for the price? This is for RU-vid videos, like sketches and vlogs. Note that the 5DMIV for some inconvenient reason lacks a tilt/swivel so if I go with that camera I would use it for sketches, podcasts, and still photography (and maybe a couple other uses) while using the camcorder I have/picking up a slightly better one for vlogs. I just would like to hear your opinion as to what is more "worth the price." Canon 5D Mark IV or Lumix G7. Thanks!
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Charlie Sitarski! The dual pixel AF is far better than what Panasonic can offer for video at least. But bang for your buch wise, the G7 beats the 5DMVI head over heels. Vlogging with the G7 is tricky, because the Af has no PHASE detection the FACE recognition AF of the G7 not reliable when you turn your face away from the camera. What works best for me is either tracking AF, in which case you would have to tap your face/head every time , or 1 area AF with a AF area fitted to the size of your head, that one actually works almost pretty damn good, if you use the G7 with the latest iteration of the kit lens, or any lens that has stepping motors. 14 42 pancake kit lens of g7 or 12 60 kit lens of g85 or 12 32 pancake all react rather well in good lighting. 4k AF though is noticeably slower than 1080p AF. With the 5DMVI you simply rarely run into AF issues, but the G7, in terms of price point, given the quality it can deliver, is unbeatable by any canon camera in my opinion. Hope that helps you out a little. Greetings!

Sharpening Images can be done in-camera, or in postproduction. Some cameras do record the image less sharp to be able to get the tonal differences between pixels down better. What lens are you using? With the G7 you can go into the Motion Picture menu. When in manual movie mode. Select Photo Style. And then with each photo style, I use cinelike v, you can adjust different settings. The 2nd one from the top is the sharpness setting. This way you can tell the camera to sharpen the image with its internal processing. rather than using a software later on. In a software environment there's also options for sharpening the image. With adobe premiere it's the unsharp mask for example. you can search for it within the effects library. Hope that helps you out a little. More questions? Just ask! Greetings!

Ok, the kittens isn't as good when it comes to AF performance as the 12-32 I am using. Do you have the latest firmware installed for both the camera and the lens? Also you could try shooting in 4k, depending on the situation you could benefit from a slower autofocus in 4k video mode....which to some degree might weaken the focus breathing effect in the endresult. Still a stepped down lens with manual AF and less moving around on your part might help you while you check for the latest firmware of lens and camera body. were you able to find the in camera sharpening settings? Hello Amelie! Understood you just fine:) You can update any g7 camera to the latest firmware. So should it be an older one, that still has an earlier firmware version you can update it to the latest one. Also you could ask the sller which firmware is installed of course. The G85 has the same Af system as the G7. I have never used a g85 myself though. But apart from the sensor shift IS it pretty much looks the same as the G7, performance wise that is. Also definitely get a G7 with either a new version kit lens, the 14 42 as a pancake lens, or the 12 60 kit lens of the g85, or the 12 32. Get body and lens separately if you have to, because these lenses have better AF motors built into them, that helps the AF performance as well. Out of the 14 42 kit, the 12 32 and the 12 60, I would go with the 12 60 if i didn*t already own the 12 32, which works well with the G7 AF. Hope that helped you out. Greetings!

Hey, Valentina! Yes, the firmware can be updated. Also make sure to get the newer version kitlens, 14 42 pancake version, or the 12 32 from panasonic. The AF motor of the lens is also important. the 12 32 for example has a stepping motor which also improves the performance. The 14 42 is also very good in that regard. Hope that helps you out a little. Greetings!

TubeNoob thank you so much! Your information has been very useful! May I ask, do you think this would be the right camera for a low light condition where I’m filming myself while drumming? I’m no big expert with cameras, but slowly learning. Thank you once again for your help!
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Mh......lowlight......the sensor isn't big....but in my experience you can push the camera to 3200 ISO with decent results. Especially if you record 4k and downscale to 1080p in your editing software. The downscale will take care of much of the unpleasant digital noise. Since this looks like a stationary shot I would definitely recommend manual focus, because the contrast detect system can have difficulties in lowlight. If the kit lens doesn't perform to your liking, then a manual focus lens like the rokinon/samyang 12mm f2 for micro four thirds will bring a noticeable improvement. Do you want to use the camera for more than filming yourself drumming?
@travis.stevens

Definitely stuck between the G7 and M6. The M6 seems to win at AF and low light, but the G7 is more affordable, does 4k, and has the viewfinder for stills (the Canon EVF is way too expensive). Can't decide thanks to your awesome videos :)

Well, either you can use complete manual focus. Then there will be no hunting. You could also set the AE/AF lock button to just AF lock. So you would set your focus, the hit the lock button and it will stay put. It is the tiny buttoon in the middle of the AF mode selection lever to the right side of the optical viewfinder. Hope that helps you out a little. More questions? Just ask. Greetings!

Like the camera starting to focus hunt for no good reason after already having locked focus. I never experienced that not before the firmware update not after. Sometimes the focus is a little jittery when lighting and background change quickly, sometimes that does lead to focus hunting. But with the latest firmware on both body and lens, combined with a new lens with a stepping motor, like the 12 32 panasonic, the 14 42 pancake version kit lens or the 12 60 g85 kit lens I have not experienced that behavior. Hi there, i was thinking about getting a Nikon D5500, but do you think its better to spend a bit more on the Lumix G7? Which is better for vlogging and cinematics? and how about the future lens investment? or the kit lens 14-42mm is sufficient? Thank you and great tests you did :)
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hello, Kacak Head! I'd choose the G7 over the D5500, because it has 4k and is the overall more videocentric camera. Zebras, focus peaking, histogram, level gauge, all you need to confidently set up a completely manual shot is there. The nikon isn't as well equipped. Both have a tilt svivel screen, which is the best kind of screen you can have for vlogging and videography in general I believe. Both have flat color profiles, so you can get the best out of the image in postproduction color grading. The AF on the Nikon is a little faster in my experience, but also more jittery than the G7 AF. I'd rather go for a slower AF that is less jittery and more smooth, but that is personal preference. AF noise is a problem with both cameras, depending on the lens. Teher's more silent m4/3 lenses than Nikon apsc lenses. So external mics for both cameras are necessary I would say. Also the Nikon AF loses focus more often in my experience....but that's just a gut feeling...it's been some time ince I used that Nikon. Lens selection wise. The Nikon arsenal of lenses is bigger than the m4/3 arsenal, but with the m.zuiko lenses you have everything you need for videography/vlogging. Most video is shot inbetween the 24 100 mm range(full frame equivalent). So might I suggest, should you land on the G7, to get the body only and invest in the m.zuiko 12 50. With the G7s 2x crop factor that comes to 24 100mm. It's more expensive, but well worth the money. On the nikon side maybe the nikkor 18 105. But I have never used that lens myself. It's a good range for all purpose videography though. 24mm is wide enough for vlogging if the cameras are on a gorillapod/selfie stick of some sort. Handheld I think the end result doesn't look nicely.... Vlogging, imho loves the super wide angle. It is not a must, but I am a strong proponent:) of course again, that's totally up to you and your aesthetic preferences. G7 side that would be the 9 18 m.zuiko. On the Nikon side the Sigma 10 20 for example. Form factor: Nikon setups will be bigger, because we're talking dslr lenses. G7 Setup will almost always be lighter and smaller, allthough the D5500 is pretty small for a DSLR. Tiny actually... So I would choose the G7. Smaller, lighter, video AF more to my liking, 4k, video features. Hope that helps you out. Greetings!
@ahmadmunsifhalim
@ahmadmunsifhalim 7 лет назад
Thanks man for the response and it is really helpful and very detail but i do have to ask, if I'm landing with the G7 with the m.zuiko lenses, does the AF system works the same like in this video? or i got to use manual zoom (which is not a problem when doing cinematic but vlogging wise is quite troublesome) If not, should i get with the kit lens and get a speed booster instead since my brother has a few lenses for his canon, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8.
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
So far, the m.zuikos I have used are doing ok. These would be the 12-40 2.8, the 12 50 and the 9 18. It is not a fast focus, but it's always done a good job with these lenses. The Sigma and Tokina are great lenses, but relativesly big, the tokina especially. The extra stop of light with the metabones is pretty cool, but the setup will be more bulky and with some lenses the speedbooster doesn't really do a good job with the AF....definitely get a deal with a return policy and test your brothers lenses thoroughly with the booster. On the plus side, you then have the whole arsenal of canon lenses sigma tokina etc.. me personally I tend to keep the setups compact, so I would go with the m.zuikos or the 12 50 only for starters, because it's really all one needs to begin...very good zoom range 24 100 mm ff equiv. I am going to do a vlog with the g7 and the 9 18 m.zuiko next week, so it will propably be up in two weeks....but sofar the AF is doing allright. That lens in combination with my 12 32 panasonic from the video or the 12 50 is a pretty good for example. I would never use a lens that didn't give me video AF performance that isn't suitable for vlogging. You can't really use manual focus when vlogging all the time....that'll drive you crazy:) Greetings!

Hi! I'm now shooting on the a5100 but I do want to vlog- which means I do need a hotshoe and mic input which the g7 has. Do you think I'll be frustrated if I change my camera to the g7 in terms of focusing? I saw in your past video that you had your hands on the a5100 too :) subbed!
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Jam:) In all honesty, you propably will be frustrated at first. The A5100 video AF is just too good:) The G7 can't compete in that regard. That's a fact. Not in speed, not in precision and not in lowlight. The question is will it kill your motivation or fun in creating video to have slower video AF? The G7 is a great camera. It's for sure the better all around video camera, but the video AF is a definite weak point in comparison to the A5100, which is not to say it's a bad video AF alltogether, it just pales in comparison to an excellent phase detect system. There are workarounds which I used to bypass the external audio problem,but it is more of a hassle than just having the possibility of an external mic and recording directly to the camera. Check "on the road vlogging" or the "most underrated vlogging camera" video. Both show a workaround with the zoom h1 and a lav mic. If that's even a consideratiob for you. Have you thought about using something like agalaxy s7 ith some additional tech? Ask away if you have more questions. Greetings!:)
@jam6563
@jam6563 7 лет назад
I guess for vlog-type videos you really do need fast AF because you're capturing moments and not just staging a scene like one might do when you stage the cinematography for more cinematic shots. If for cinematic shots, you really do need to use manual. But for spur-of-the-moment things, AF is important. It's really such a hassle to be recording separate audio for recording fun moments in a vlog. I just don't understand why sony would not put an articulating screen on their mirrorless cameras. That's really the only downside to that set-up. Otherwise, it would have been the perfect vlogging camera. Have you looked into the canon eos m5? They said its AF is as fast as the 80D. Which is faster, the 80D (if you've tried it) or the sony ones? The only downside in the m5 is that the screen flips down. HAHA totally useless when you mount it anywhere. Some other people's fix to that is to add a bracket but that totally defeats the purpose of it being small. What camera do you recommend for vlogging with great autofocus, mic input and articulating screen? Thank you so much for responding!

@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hello, NoOtherRose! What lens do you use? What video mode are you shooting in? I would suggest updating to the latest firmware, shooting in 1080p video mode (4k AF performance is very slow compared to the 1080p video mode) and using something like the 12-32mm panasonic pancake lens, or the recent pancake version of the 14-42mm kit lens. They have fast, almost silent stepping motors, which helps with AF performance. Other than that Movie Mode - Program Auto - should have no trouble with face recognition. Have you registered your face already with the camera? Hope that helps you out a little. Let me know if it helped! Greetings!

Hey, Oxmate! If you don't want to change the shooting mode, you have to change the focus mode. At least I don*t know of a way to have the focus mode switch just by using either the shutter button or the video button I'm afraid......

@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
No, by shutter AF I mean that the camera allows the user during live view and video recording to force focus by pushing the shutter button half way. You will notice the focus jumping a little, but the camera will most likely hit focus, also in difficult situations, or at least start to reset the focus if it is lost completely. Custom Menu - page 1 of 9 - last menu item. That's where shutter AF can be turned on and off. Greetings!

@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hello, Cesare! I am using the Panasonic 12-32mm pancake lens in this review. The internal microphone picks up the video AF noise if you're shooting 1080p, but 4k video AF, which is slower than the 1080p video AF isn't picked up. When you use an external mic, no AF noise is picked up whatsoever...Hope that helps.....Greetings!

Thank you, actually I dropped the idea of buying a Canon powershot G7x because of rewieved noise problems... but as I will be shooting mostrly in 1080p, seems like I would have the same problems with the lumix G7.. It is good that here there is the possibility of the external mic, even though was not in my plans to buy one from day one...

You can get a rode video micro for 60 bucks, that is a big bang for the buck mic which works well with the g7.....I use the video mic pro...but it is more expensive.....have you looked at a canon eos m3...or a rebel t6i? STM lenses are virtually silent...

Hi TubeNoob- quick question- I'm a beginner and I'm looking to buy my first actual camera. I don't own any previous gear or lenses. What camera would you recommend to get into for vlogging and some cinematic footage?
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Steve:) Not an easy question to answer....have you thought about using a smartphone for starters?....like the s7 edge for example around which you can build a pretty cool vlogging setup... Might not sound like a serious choice, but it's a camera you always have with you, that has social media at the backend if you will, that's light weight and easy to use and under good lighting situation can give you crazy good results, also with some adapters and additional gear you can use it to studio shoot. Here's some videos on my channel about the S7 Edge, blogging setup and studio shooting....if that sounds interesting to you. In general, for beginners the best camera is the one that has you create the most, because then you get better a creating faster and at using a camera, which will make you more savy in using other cameras as well. In the beginning therefore convenience is key imho. You have to feel good using the camera, there has to be as little obstacles in-between you the record button and a finished video as possible. Tech should never hinder the creative process, which it tends to do if it takes experience to use it. So don't discourage yourself with the idea that you need great specs, great light or great whatever to start. if you have the money, wait a little and get the EOS m6, put one of the external mic setups on that thing, I have videos about an Eos m3 setup on my channel for example, and you're pretty much at the forefront of vlogging cameras in 2017. The Eos m3 of course as the predecessor of the m6 would be an option.....Sony A5100 if you don't need external audio and don't do long takes, because it tends to overheat, has crazy good AF and very good image quality....if you put a decent wide angle on the g7 it's also a good blogging camera, but you will need an external mic due to AF noise in 1080p mode. Can you give me a budget? Greetings!
@SRC598
@SRC598 7 лет назад
Thanks for a thorough response. You have definitely given me lots to consider. Currently I use my iphone 6S plus and GoPro camera for vlogging. It is a ton of fun and is a hobby for me. However, it just doesnt seem to do the job I am looking for. It really lacks the quality that I am looking for. I use Filmic Pro on my phone which is a great app but the low light on the iphone is brutal. I will have to eventually buy a mic to improve the audio quality- in the mean time I will use my phone to record audio. With that being said- I want an actual camera that will be able to take much better photos/video than a smartphone. The camera on my iphone is good but Id like to step it up a bit. My budget will be around $1000 Canadian dollars. The Panasonic G7, G85, a6300, Canon 80D are all cameras that I have been researching. I really like the idea of being able to collect lenses and change up the look. Thanks for your feedback! Regards Steve
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Ok, with that budget...out of all of those....if you want to get into more than one lens right away would be the G7, with say the 12 32mm panasonic for vlog type shooting and another lens of your choice.....it's a very good allround camera, but you will have to put in time to get to know its features to make the best use of it. But once you have put in that time it's a powerhouse for video. AF performance with third party lenses sometimes isn't very good though...especially the m.zuikos aren't always working right in my experience, than again panasonic has great lenses for the m43 so... If the kit 12 60 of the g85, which gives you a very good range of a 24 to 120mm ff equiv than I would go g85. These two above the 80d because of the samller form factor and the 4k capability. The 85 above the 7 because of the inbuilt stabilization. If lack of 4k and bulkyness aren't a problem for you, than the canon of course is the one with the best AF that isn't overheating. Also consider the drop in price of the 70D since the sale of the 80d....the 70d is still a great camera and neistat shot some of the alltime best vlogs ever with that thing. The 6300 has crazy ridiculously stellar *some more nice adjectives* AF, BUT no touch screen no tilt svivel screen and does overheat after long takes. Especially the lack of a touch screen bugs me, which the 6500 has, but then again, higher price point of course. Pure vlogging only: 80d/70d with the 10-18mm stm. Cons: Heavy, heavy, heavy...your arm will hurt soon when vlogging on a selfie stick. Pros: Reliable workhorse, great AF, tilt svivel screen. Allrounder at the best price point: G7 with the 12 32 or 12 60. Cons. Only Ok AF. Pros. 4k, tilt svivel screen, light weight, light weight, light weight.... Allrounder at ok pricepoint: G85. Same Cons, same Pros (a little heavier though) PLUS stabilization.... Now the A6300 is a camera where your style of shooting really has to fit the camera, because of the overheating. if you do short takes, cool, but if you are someone who also tends to just let the camera roll and also does talking head stuff for extended periods of time like 10 to 15 minutes, maybe in hot weather, then it won't make you happy. After turning it off and on again, it will propably still give you another couple of minutes, but doing that a lot stresses the electronics. I myself, if I didn't already own a G7 and the 7 14 panasonic, would propably go for the g85 with the 12 60 kit lens. Hope that helped a little. More questions? Just ask. Greetings!

TubeNoob Thank you for your response. I've already seen that video at least 10 times. Cinelike d for me makes too much noise on darker colours and sometimes even skin. I have to overexpose video so it isn't there, but then I lose the colour. It's such a pain in the ass. I use natural profile, and set everything to -1. It doesn't matter if I shoot in 4k or 1080p, still have noise. It's nice to hear different opinions so I can try different things but for now I'm just depressed.
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Where are you shooting at? Like REALLY low light situations. I found the noise handling of that camera to be quite good for a 4/3 sensor actually..... $k isn't going to get rid of the noise, but if you downscale the noise is downscaled with it. Are you producing for youtube? What exactly are you trying to capture?
@matejhasnek
@matejhasnek 6 лет назад
The problem is that I shoot in medium light situations and my face is a bit overexposed, but if I have a tiny shadow somewhere on my face, eyebrows, neck etc. it's so annoyingly noisy. I won't talk about background, sometimes even some light colored wood is noisy (even when ISO is at the lowest, 200-400). I'll try that solution of shooting 4k and downscaling it to 1080p. I shoot vlog-type stuff, but not yet for youtube, I'll start that in a month or so. I use Toshiba exceria pro 64gb 95mb/s and Lexar u3 150mb/s. Toshiba is kind of warm after 10-15min of shooting. Today I tested noise reduction on natural profile and realized it's best to leave it at 0, because it makes no difference. Funny thing, I'm completely satisfied with autofocus and don't have any problems with that, but I heard a lot of people complain about that.
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Weired somehow.....maybe the trick is just to use some artificial light to help out with that. With AF it largely depends on the firmware, having a new lens with a stepping motor and shooting preferably in a 50 60 fps video mode. Also it depends on how difficult the situation is for the AF system. I found it to work fine if you don't expect it to be fast. Greetings!

The main difference is that the menu items change between modes. Video mode, more video centric settings, photo modes some more stills related options. That's their idea behind those modes. Doesn'T change the possible quality of video if you hit record in a photo mode. Hope that helped you out a little. Greetings!

@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Hey, Save DnB! Thanks for the nice comment, much appreciated:) Well, if you're already at an f1.4, at a shutter speed of 1/25th with a 25fps frame rate, then the only way to get a brighter image is to raise the ISO. If you can do a 4k 1080p downscale later on in post production, I feel you can push the camera to 6400 ISO, if not 3200 feels like the max to me before the image quality degrades too much. But that is personal aesthetic preference, so you might be able to accept more digital noise than me. Hope that helps you out a little. More questions? Just ask... greetings!

What focus option should I use if I'm shooting a lot of motions objects? Fo example i'm walking with camera, shooting ppl in front of me a the focus is always jumping. Is there is any solutions to hold focus in one area or not to jump if objects is always mucing ?
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
The easiest solution for a shot like this is switching to manual focus for the duration of that shot. Use peaking to set the focus to where you want it manually. In case of the G7 that is easy, because it has a manual switch for the autofocus modes. If the lens you use doesn't have a manual focus ring though, doing it with the screen by touch usually takes some time if the focus isn't where you want it to be. With a lens that has a manual focus ring it is done pretty quickly. Another option would be to set the AF/AE lock button, the one in the middle of the AF mode selector to AF lock only. This way when you push this little button the Focus stays right where it was when you pushed the button and starts going continuous when you push the button again. To set this up: Go to CUSTOM MENU - 1st submenu - set AF/AE Lock to "AF LOCK" and set AF/AE Lock Hold tp "ON". This way by pushing the button Focus will remain where it was and you don'T have to hold down the button to have the focus stay, but psh it again once you want autofocusing to continue. The third option I can think of is using 1-area AF with an relatively small area right in the middle of the screen, so focus tries to keep the center of the image sharp at all times. You would have to experiment with that a little. Hope one of these works for you. Greetings!

As far as AF speed is concerned FHD 50 fps will get you the fastest focusing.

Nice Video! What should i buy 700d or g7 ? (Vlogging, cinematography
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 7 лет назад
Hey, Rabusek! Well the T5i has a hybrid AF system with at least 9 cross type AF points with phase detect, so that should put it ahead of the G7 in regards to Af performance. Still it is not that good I hear. Never used one myself though. Super wide angle lenses for vlogging are cheaper on the canon side. You can get the 10 18 for like 250 bucks. The 7 14 from Panasonic is around 800! Doesn't matter if you don't need such a superwide angle of course. Just thought I should mention it. For cinematography definitely the G7 is better suited, because it is the much more feature rich camera. The T5i doesn*t even have focus peaking.....so if you want to manually focus you need an external monitor to really be able to check if focus sits correctly. With the G7 and peaking its no problem at all using the little camera screen. I think if you also want to do cinematography and pre meditated designed shots, then the G7 offers a lot more. Also I would recommend you to get the body and lens separately. Because the 12 60 kit lens of the g85 is a pretty good lens for all around cinematography. 12, a 24 mm ff eq, is wide enough on the wide end for vlogging, and 60, a 120 ff eq, is enough tele lens reach for most situations. Hope that helps you out. Greetigns!

Completed building. Indoors and outdoors general footage. Will the 14-42mm kit be ok to shoot 12x12 rooms from the room corner, its not photography so we can pan to show more of the room left to right. But with the 14-42mm @14mm is it less wider than 14mm on a canon APSC sensor ? Since the sensor is smaller than an APS-C sensor then i think the wideness will be even lesser right ? So 14mm on this cam will be like 18mm on a APSC ?

Can you do a pull focus with this autofocus using the touchscreen?
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 6 лет назад
Yes, you can, but not as precisely as you could using a lens with a zoom ring. When using the manual focus mode with a lens that doesn't have a zoom ring you will get a digital slide control on the display which you can operate with your finger or a touch pen, which in my experience works better. During the focus pull you will get super smooth motion of the focal plane, but stopping at the exact right point can be tricky and will usually entail some trial and error...hope that answer helps you out a little.
