Agree. But some tenants are in the right. And a landlord from the past they have had a beef with could deliberately lie on a person or family. Intentional damage by renters isn’t covered by insurance. The owners have to sue the renters for payment. Legally, the renters could get jail time, but in reality, they won’t won’t, and given an order to pay when they are able with no time limit. The owners are screwed.

That's the thing. My tenant is be "aided" by a NPO for low income renters, so she is getting free help. I am a low income owner with no rent for 14 months, which gets me nothing. But the NPO is doing nothing but ensuring I will never rent to anyone low income, needs time for a deposit, has a dog, or anything else I consider a risk. Same here. I am a single mother of 5, I have 3 disabled children, and was in a horrible car accident that almost took my life. All of this in the midst of the pandemic. Still managed to keep up with my bills and rent. There are some heartless people in the world. Damn. 😩
@All Hail with all due respect, but I only gave a portion of my story, so you don't know what I've lost. My point is that no matter how bad it has got or could get for people, this is absolutely unacceptable.
@All Hail and that is what I was saying. I agree as far as that. No one should destroy anyone's property. Again, you are assuming and you have no clue what I received or didn't receive, what I get or don't get, nor what I lost or maintained besides what info I allowed you know. That's messed up for you to assume anything otherwise. Just because I said I have disabled children does not automatically qualifies them for checks. And even so, that would not mean that I don't work, own a business, or anything. My story also does not mean I get government housing either. You took a portion of my story and ran with it. I am not trying to take away from anyone the fact that there are people with little to no income. We all have suffered in some way, form, or fashion across the entire world. I just wanted to share some of my life and my opinion that I paid my bills and my rent throughout this pandemic. Whatever that entails in order for me to do so, is my business. This was a extra shitty tenant and I am not. That's it. You seem to have taken this to heart and I'm sorry if I might have came off in a way that touched you. That was not my intentions at all. Against you nor anyone else. I am sorry to hear about your business and savings. That was incredibly awful. I am happy to hear that things have gotten a little better for you and your children. Thank you for your empathy. I hope you all continue to thrive.
@All Hail I completely understand and I sure do empathize. I just agreed with the person who made this post. I do apologize, again, if I was in that way. I am just lucky to even be here to have this conversation with you. Someone did a hit and run on me while I was working. Ran a red light and hit my passenger rear end. I lost control. My work car rolled over several times and was completely totaled. Bystanders had to pull me out of the wreckage. This happened the end of July last year and after I returned to work after being furloughed. I just wanted to share my experience of what I am/was going through during Covid and I do/did what I need/needed to do to pay my bills and rent. My own struggles. I found it crazy as hell that someone would do a landlord like this during a time like this as well. I really didn't think it would get to this extent, but take it in stride. This is a learning experience. 🤷 My condolences to those you have lost. Bless you.

Idk maybe your land lord is an ass or maybe there's more too it. 🤷
It depends, if the market is depressed and people can move for cheaper rent, they cannot pass the cost. Here in the Bay Area, my complex lost 50% of the tenants because rent has fallen and people moved. The landlord made no adjustment and finally had to lower the rent. However, we still have a 25% vacancy rate.
Matt Garratt Not always, especially when you are dealing with rent control. This is just another reason, why I'm no longer a landlord & just buy & flip now. Much less hassle & headaches & a bigger profit. I recommended this to anyone, over doing the landlord thing.

So many used the pandemic as a way to get over taking responsibility for themselves.
This has nothing to do with a pandemic, and the government needs to stay out of putting eviction restrictions on businesses trying to make money thru a pandemic. The amount of unemployment and stimulus money has made many tenants with this type of character lazy and mean-spirited while governor has tied the hard-working man's hands!
When are we going to end this non-sense? Lift the moratorium and forbearance unless we help landlords as well. Too many people are living for free and abusing the system.

My house was destroyed as well due to the fact I couldn't evict in time😭. I tried to work with them . I have only 1 property. And then I tried to work with them, and they didnt want to pay 0 ever. Now they bought a new construction and my home is destroyed.
I’m in the same boat. I’ve received $0 ever and she’s living there free and I’m expected to by law pay her utilities smh. I’m sorry you’re going through this.
You should have filed a lawsuit against them, to evict and to collect monetary judgment. Then when they want to buy a house, unless they have the full price in cash they will need a loan. The lender will require that they pay off the monetary judgments before the loan gets issued. And that’s when you would have been paid.
By passing the cost onto existing tenants that are paying their rent, will cause a ripple effect where the existing tenants will not renew due to their rent going up significantly. Then these landlords are dealing with more vacancies to occupy vs the 1 eviction.
As a property manager working with a large company, I feel for all the landlords like this gentleman... I evicted tenants in January and February here in Tennessee and their evictions were halted as well. Unfortunately in Virginia the eviction process takes 60 to 90 days where is here in Tennessee I could file an eviction five days after a late rent payment and typically they were out within 30 days unless I had to file a writ bc they didn't leave and even then the writ would be fulfilled and the sheriff would be setting them out within 2 weeks typically These protections need to be loosened there needs to be rigorous standards where only the people that truly deserve this break and rent payment are getting it. People who do not care are trashing properties and ruining small landlord's lives. this gentleman will be okay but what about the person that only owns one or two rental properties that have to continue paying the mortgage and even utilities in some cases for a person that does not care about the balance on their credit once we are able to file again... I don't understand how the government is okay with letting all these people live rent free while the people who do take care of their bills are drowning in debt now bc someone else is too lazy and taking advantage of a horrible virus that is killing people.everyday I pass at least four fast food restaurants that are hiring and if I would have lost my job in this that is where I would be working right now until I got another property manager position, cleaning houses, or do whatever I could to make money.. Let's just hope and pray it will go away soon.
"...but what about the person that only owns one or two rental properties that have to continue paying the mortgage and even utilities in some cases for a person that does not care about the balance on their credit..." San Francisco Assemblyman David Lieu said the moratorium not only prevents spread of the virus but also prevents increased homelessness. Otherwise, can you imagine the tsunami of homeless people if and when the eviction is lifted? Sooo - small landlords with nonpaying tenants are now the equivalent of NGOs who take care of the homeless and would-be homeless. Last we know, NGOs are tax-exempt and receive subsidy from the government. Small homeowners do not ...yet?

Been paying my rent throughout the pandemic even when my landlord never fixes anything & harasses me when I’m 4 days late😡just blessed to have a roof over my head & can pay my rent.
Crazy I was 4 days late now they want me to move. Im on a month to month lease tho so don't think I have much options...July will be 2 years I've been a good tenant other than being late 3 times....wish I had a cool landlord
I rented my house to a family member who trashed my house, took doorknobs , painted walls , broken doors distorted the beautiful yard , complete trashed I was in tears , left me with 3 months utility bills, he never said anything about it acted like I had to take it, was very bad I ended it in hospital, how’s some one you love and trust do you so much harm ?
It works both ways. We rented a house, painted, put in new tile bath floor, light fixtures, ceiling fans, switch plates, drawer and cabinet knobs. Cleaned loads of junk from the yard. Landlord didn't fix some things at all, others he took forever. After my husband was paralyzed by a medical mistake, it took a few weeks to get his disability and insurance checks. We were one day late on rent, got an eviction notice. Guy knew no more repairs would be done, and he could raise the rent after our improvements. I took my fans, switch plates, drawer knobs. He reported them all stolen. I had every receipt! He was lucky I didn't pull out the light fixtures!
I rented a below average old mess of a house for cheap..seemingly gruff landlord said rent stay cheap if he never heard from Jenni constantly improved the joint to my affordable standards and gave him the receipts for write offs...20 years later he sold me the place pretty cheap..i.m still here and we consider each other a trusted friend..i guess we were both lucky and honest..sometimes it pays off..

And on top of state farm making no pay out on said claim it shows up now when i try to get new insurance as if i filed a claim of vandalism even though there was no pay out Now ant that some shit
There are going to be alot of people who have been living for free for over a year getting extra money from unemployment and are just going to pack and leave when they are ordered to pay the back rent.

Do you not understand that we are all interconnected? THis is affecting everyone on a global scale. I am almost certain that you will notice rent increases everywhere when you decide to ditch your current landlord because you don't want to pay the extra. .
@@sb9697 Every business everywhere does this. Stealing from stores will cause them to start raising their prices. Higher taxes, Labor and freight increases cause a store to increase prices on items and services to offset some of those increases. Same thing happens with landlords. That kind of damage done by these tenants will cause a landlord to increase rents on all other tenants even if by $25.00 -$50.00 a month to offset some of that damage cost over time. All landlords would do the same even in large apartment complexes. It might be a reasonable slow increase but an increase none the less. It happens all the time in all segments of business. Don’t like it? Still think it’s unfair and greedy? Buy a house and stop giving your money to those “greedy” landlords. The county/state will tell you how much you owe them in taxes each and every year for the property you’ve bought.

Some people are just evil to their core but eventually karma will catch up with them.
Thankfully I have had mostly OK renters for 25 years and the current people are just awesome. Now I can take my pension so as soon as the current tenants move on I will be selling the buildings. I'm not taking a chance on somebody I don't know anymore. The stress is just not worth it.
Having the same problems in Detroit. The difference here is that cases which are not even eligible for the moratorium are being postponed indefinitely while small landlords are crippled.
I think the landlord should send the bill to the CDC. There's no reason landlords should have to excuse rents & pay for idiot tenants like this. Covid isn't the fault of small landlords. People are just taking advantage by not paying rent that long
In my state, landlords can evict for breach of contract not related to rent payments ... especially for property damage. I don’t know about Ct. law but it is hard to believe the state would let that happen.
I can’t imagine damaging someone’s property like this( after living there rent free) the renters have some bad karma coming their way and it maybe a little sooner than later.
Thats just horrible. I would never dream of doing anything close to that. I'm a renter and I managed thankfully to pay my rent during this pandemic. When I move out its usually cleanerthan when I moved in. Wish him luck,
He needs to sue the CDC for violating his 5th Amendment Right to due process and taking of his property without just compensation. The CDC also violated Article 1, Section 10, Clause 1 - no state shall impair the obligation of contracts.
@One Decent Machinist Not happening! That man most likely hasn't the amount of money it would costs him to fight the CDC & their attorneys. He's just needs to suck it up, pay his deductible & turn it into his homeowners ins. Every landlord has homeowner ins. on the homes that they rent out, if he doesn't, then he's not a very smart business man! Also, if he knew what he was doing, he should had in the lease that the renter needed to provide proof of renter's ins. Granted, it sucks that there are people out here that will do this kind of destruction to someone else's property, but to see the landlord crying about it when he knows dam well that he has homeowner's ins. that will pay for the damage is ridiculous.
@@pwp8737 Good luck with that, people that do this shit are low life's & have nothing to take or a job or wages to garnish! They are called professional renters & will live for free for about a year, because it can take that long to evict someone. Once they realize that they finally do have to vacate, they will destroy the whole property.
Many landlords (like me) have sold our properties because tenants are becoming increasingly abusive . Worse yet, the law is on their side. Now there are fewer rental units available, and the price of rent will go up for everyone. (And people will cry about the housing shortage in their city) I will never rent out my property again.

Nothing can be done ATM if the house is being torn up. In Detroit, you are supposed to have a possession hearing within 7 days of original summons date. These are court rules. I am in month 8, waiting to get my house back from someone who has not paid since last March and received notice last Feb. Even if she has issue with me, which wouldn't be rational, how can she explain not paying utility bills? She just wants a free ride and saw a chance to get one.
They should be thrown in jail. Lose your job can't pay ok but trashing the place you crossed the line i would have gone in and ended them. They'd be living there permanently under the floorboards.
Nah could of been better. Pull the wire out of the wall. Cut the copper pipes and recycle the ac. Would be easier for landlord to build a new house at that point.
The moratorium is the most BOGUS and unfair act of government during this entire pandemic. Im a renter, and wouldn't usually take the side of landlords, but its so incredibly unfair.
I sure hope the so-called renter will be brought to justice. He/she should have to pay for all damages. And have a vandalism charge to say the least on record. And good luck getting another rental. No rental property will give anyone with an eviction the time of day.
