true enough but "why do you wanna to be prez" is such as simple question that an experience politico totally collapses is utterly bizarre
@Michael-cx1zi
@Michael-cx1zi Месяц назад
@@MrRaulstrnad Exactly. That wasn’t a gotcha question. The problems was that he was challenging an incumbent president of his party. It’s a risky venture because it makes that incumbent more vulnerable in the general election and then you the challenger can get blamed for that. Reagan challenged Ford for awhile in 1976 and Ford lost the general election and then of course as this video is about Ted Kennedy challenged Carter who went on to lose in the general election.

His intiial answer was meandering but it wasn't horrible... it was when Mudd forced him to get specific that he lost his footing... I mean, you can't be thinking about challenging a sitting President from your own party and then answer a question about how you would differ from him with "On which particular issues?"... it sounds like you don't have any real differences

Odd that an awkward answer to a basic question sunk Teddy’s presidential aspirations… and not leaving the girl for dead in his car. Reagan wouldve crushed him anyway.

This was the 1980 campaign. Even if Teddy won the primary, he would have gotten killed by Reagan, just as Carter did. He had no chance to become President after leaving that girl to drown in the lake.

Ted seemed to beat around the bush and not get to specifics about why he was running for President and what he would do differently from Carter. So Roger caught him with his pants down regarding lacking a focused agenda. Yet he remained a good senator. Rest in peace, Roger and Ted.

EMK would have made a tremendous President. Kennedy wasn't ready to announce his intentions for the Presidency. Even though Kennedy would announce within the next ten days (after the Mudd interview). In a presidential campaign, your heart & soul must be in it. Senator Kennedy was not yet ready, and so, his response was jumbled and vague. When Kennedy dis formerly announce his intentions to seek the presidency for the Democratic Party, he was forthright, energetic and full of vigor.

His answer to the question was not bad at all. Yes he froze at the beginning and he answered it like a dead corpse but it was not a bad answer. This is a great country. Yes we have problems. Other countries that are far less resourceful than us are handling their problems far better than us. I believe in the American people that we can do better and I want to lead the nation into becoming what it can be to get us out of the mess that we're in. You listen to the dribble about the question and his answer and you'd think he gave a totally incoherent answer. That just was not the case.

I mean, it's not THAT bad! If he added one particular example of how he would utilize America to her full potential, it actually would've been a pretty powerful answer

I don't think this answer is as horrid as its reputation. It's thoughtful and in depth. It reminds me of the hysteria the media made when Howard Dean shouted "Ya-hoo!" after winning a primary. They acted like he pulled his pants down and mooned the audience when it was just an exuberant yell.

The implied (. but missing) words were "..and I want to lead this country to resolve those issues.." or words to that effect. His response carefully laid out what needed correcting and it was fair of him to ask Roger Mudd to be more specific on his follow up question. Kennedy got a bum rap on this one.
