This man was raised near the ocean, sailing, and swimming. For her to drown in his presence is by far the most ridiculous event of all times. I don't know what went on that night but if he was too drunk to keep diving to save her, he was too drunk to drive and should have been accountable. Money and fame have saved a lot of asses.
No, it shows how much of a hard on America has for the Kennedy's. Ted rode on his families name more so than any of the other Kennedy's including joe kennedy jr who died. Even though Ted wasn't the smartest guy, he probably would have won the election in the 1970s if he didn't kill someone.
I'm so glad Kennedy came clean and told Americans the whole truth. I believe it when he states he was sober and that can't remember certain aspects of the incident. He was senator for the next 40 years.
Pitiful!!! Suppose for a moment that Mary Jo escaped the crash ,neglected to get help, neglected to report the crash until the next day, suppose Teddy was the one trapped inside the car. Ask yourself, what would have been Mary Jo's fate?

Someone involved in the investigation testified that Mary Jo was alive for at least two hours before she died because of an air pocket. She could have been saved, a house located 150 yards away with someone home with a phone. It's horrible to think, that if true, that must have been a hell of a way to die. But hey, the citizens of Massachusetts rewarded him for many decades afterwards. I'm ashamed to say I was born there and have family there. Disgusting.

Yes John Farrar, the scuba diver stated repeatedly that had he been called asap, he could have had her out in 45 minutes. He thought she could have lived for up to 2 hours with the air pocket. She did not drown as no water was in her lungs. She suffocated.

Kennedy was a coward, because he COULD have tried to get Mary Jo out of there. The very least he could have done was rush to the nearest house, and ask for help. She could have survived.

Mary Smith I have to say that the roll call of names of past Presidents he goes through that Massachusetts served up is really wavering from the tragedy and inappropriate for sure. I also wonder if the filming in this study or library with the bookshelves behind full of encyclopaedias (or law statute books) deliberate - to convey that knowledge, reason, gravitas and solemnity are still the unhindered backbone of many a politician.
This was a tragedy to be sure. He is a liar and there is no way to know if he was even at the scene or not. There are some schools of thought that he wasn't even there, that he let her drive drunk. I was unaware of the "found in back seat with no underwear on". I thought she was found in passenger seat fully clothed. Regardless, he is to blame for her death and should have been put in jail. I can only hope that should that incident happen today he wouldn't get away with murder. And, no autopsy? Are you kidding? OMG. Evil family of privilege.

Nixon personally knew members of the Mafia, while it is alleged that JFK'S father bought him the 1960 election with Mafia money, the facts show that both JFK and RFK went out of their way to stick it to organized crime. Ted was an outstanding Senator and should have been President as well. I do not know what happened that night, but I am aware of the evidence that he was not even driving the car, as presented by Dr. Cyril Wecht. He cannot understand why Ted would lie and say he was driving. H.R. Halderman on the Nixon tapes made the comment, "If Teddy Kennedy had only known that bear trap that he was walking into a Chappaquiddick." What does that tell you? Why during Watergate was E. Howard Hunt supposedly digging up dirt on Ted Kennedy at Chappaquiddick?
There were two homes near the sight of the accident. Both residents of those homes commented about what they believed to be Kennedy's car passing their homes. After the accident; he could have stopped at either of these homes and called the police and fire department. He chose to walk all the way back to the cottage in which the party had been held. Kennedy claimed that he was taking Mary Jo to catch the ferry through which she could return to her lodging. Yet, she left her purse and key at the cottage where the party was being held. Someone's purse was found in the car which did NOT belong to Mary Jo. Mary Jo did NOT drown her lungs were not filled with water. There was an air pocket in the car from which she was breathing a limited amount of air. The diver who brought Mary Jo's body from the wreck stated that if Kennedy had called the first responders - he believed that they could have saved her life. In John Farrar's opinion, if the accident had occurred at 12:40 AM, Mary Jo Kopechne could have lived until 2:40 AM - an hour after Kennedy, Gargan, and Markham left the scene and headed for the ferry landing. Kennedy should have received a custodial sentence for his actions that night. After Kennedy reached the cottage where the party was being held; two of his friends went with him to the sight of the accident. Once again; he could have called the police. They attempted to free Mary Jo from the car but were unsuccessful. They took Kennedy to the area in which he could board a ferry. THEY WENT BACK TO THE PARTY instead of calling the police. Kennedy claimed that he swam the distance between the points of the ferry. He walked right past the fire house and said nothing! Mary Jo was LEFT TO DIE alone! Kennedy was more concerned about his public image than the life of this young woman!
Teddy's biggest "punishment": that he was replaced in the U.S. Senate by a Republican (like his older brother Robert): at least for a while (two years)...
Ted actually didn't say he wasn't drinking. He just mentioned in passing that he was not "driving under the influence of liquor." 2:10. Unfortunately, he did not define what he meant by under the influence. Mary Jo Kopechne had a blood alcohol level of .09, which is considered legally under the influence today. So unless Ted had less to drink than she did, he no business driving an automobile that night.
The part of the speech that is the most pathetic is the use of I wondered if some Kennedy curse caused this. They just put something in there for everyone to use to grant him forgiveness.
I agree, a woman died yet he wondered if HIS family is cursed? All these years later that story still sounds very suspicious. If he didn't report it to the police, why didn't any of these other people he reached out to after the incident contact the police? And so convenient for the doc to diagnosis a concussion to cover for this irrational decision making.

Every time I hear about this tragedy, now 50 years ago, I think about what Mary Jo Kopechne's family experienced. "Money talks, and bull---it walks." He should have gone to jail. Ted Kennedy thought only about himself.
The only thing Ted Kennedy ever did like a "Lion" was eat 8 pounds of beef tartare in one sitting. At least a real lion doesn't wash it down with a fifth of Chivas.

I agree with what he said. He did not know Mary Jo was in that car. She was a campaign aid to Bobby Kennedy. I believe if he had reported the accident when it happened she would be alive and he would have ran for president and won
Based on what I know about the tragedy at Chappaquiddick, I do not believe that he had sexual relations with Mary Jo Kopechne, but I do believe he wasn't in full possession of his faculties and showed poor judgment by not reporting the accident immediately.
She was found in the back seat and didn't have her underwear on. Of course they were having sex. A cop spotted the parked car and Kennedy, not wanting to be caught in a compromising situation, drove drunk like a bat out of hell and went off the bridge. And the rest is history.
Your theory could be true and to me, the biggest tragedy of all this was, had Kennedy been less concerned about his goal to be President, and more concerned about Mary Jo, she could very well be alive today. In any case, it was really unfortunate that she never had an autopsy which could have at least shed some light. Like most people, I think that the question of what they were doing. (or not), paled in comparison to the tragic aftermath. The Kennedy's had way too much control and arrogantly placed themselves to be above the law. So many theories on this and in the end, it is still shrouded in mystery.

i believe Ted was having an affair with Mary and when the car flipped over he got scared and left her dying in the car because he knew he was having an affair and the accident would expose him to having an affair.
He only wished he had an affair with her. I figure he was coming on to her and she wasn't having it so they struggled in the car and that's why he went over the side.
