Harvey actually had a hernia for the year he was in Fiddler. He didn't want to break his contract, so he suffered through it. In an interview one time, he said that his dresser would tell him to push his guts back in and get out onstage.

@alg11297 3 года назад
Well you can believe that if you want to. Most hernias are operated on and heal very quickly. It doesn't excuse his terrible voice, worse acting and (I am convinced) the worst miscast in Broadway history. One of the few times he didn't play a woman or a gay man.

@@alg11297 Harvey firestein is not actually that bad at acting he is one of the most legendary character actors ever. Not all actors have perfect voices. Harvey can sing but he can also write really well. There are also plenty of Broadway actors whose singing voice is so much worse then Harvey’s. Look at Lin Manuel-Miranda he can’t sing well

@@gideongraf6389 Sing? I barely understand him when he talks! You really wonder why he puts himself out there. He thinks he's the spokesperson for gay people and he's a joke. He wrote a play recently about a resort where men wear women's cloths because they wanted to. It closed in a week or less. Rex Harrison knew he couldn't sing so he basically talked on the beat. Even Robert Preston said the same thing. I don't know why this guy is tolerated.

@@alg11297 The play of his you refer to, Casa Valentina (2014), ran for 79 performances and 24 previews; was nominated for 4 Tonys, including best play and transferred to London for an equally successful run. Fierstein has won 4 Tony awards in 4 different categories, 2 for writing and 2 for performing and clearly has the approval of Fiddler On the Roof's composer, Jerry Bock (interviewed in this video) for his performance as Tevye. He's not 'a joke' and he's not merely 'tolerated' - he's cherished as one of Broadway's finest dramatists.

@@lewiswilkinson5198 Then you explain to us all why in this revival he was not the first choice for Tevye but it was Al (?) Molino (?) who they let go when he was deemed not playing the role Jewish enough. Harvey is usually playing a woman or a very gay man but usually not an Orthodox jew with a large family. The only choice for this role worse than him would have been Nathan Lane (Lame) who they usually send in with these revivals. Broadway has finally admitted all they can do is revivals and Disney cartoons. If and when it re-opens they'll have to rely on the tourists again.

cards0486 Well I'm actually a Catholic instead of Jewish and I do like some of the music. Maybe I will see it if the recent Broadway revival will go on tour. Also, did you hear last week Harvey Fierstein is playing Edna in NBC's Hairspray Live.
@kathiehart2234
@kathiehart2234 8 лет назад
+Manuel Orozco No, I didn't know that. He's certainly not a singer but he's a personality that's meant for a stage. I only saw MRS. DOUBTFIRE once. I don't remember any FIDDLER.reference. You don't have to be Jewish to love this play. I saw an interview the other day about the ending. The Jews have to leave Anatevkya, their Russian village. It's 1905 and they are going many different places. You know some of them are going to other Eastern European countries. And some of them will be killed in the Holocaust. That's what makes the ending sadder.
@manuelorozco7760
@manuelorozco7760 8 лет назад
Kathie Hart Well I'm not a big sad ending person. By the way, in Mrs. Doubtfire Harvey Robin and the guy playing Frank's boyfriend sing Matchmaker Matchmaker while doing different make up. Also, Harvey has played Edna in Hairspray many times in the past 14 years since it first opened on Broadway.

The fact that a gay atheist calls Tevye the character he most connects with is a testament to Fiddler's resonating power.

I like this actor he's a good actor I can lock it behind his tevye it's the same reason I'm not a big fan of the original actor for tevye amazing actor no doubt but when I picture tevye i picture tople the man who played in the movie deep voice good finger and just have this look at you can tell devoted father who wants the best for his children I have the same issue with motelbecause I still think the Leonard Frey version is the best I just feel like half the time when I'm listening to actress play him it sounds like someone coming out of a high school choir half the time with there voice on the edge of breaking

You couldn't possible come up with a worst choice in role of Tevye. I always pictured Sholom Alaychem's character as a 6 ft 5 inch gay man with a frog croak for a voice. It just goes to show Broadway audiences will see anything.

@@VelvetCyberpunk Oh, you mean it gets worse? Did they ever make a cast recording of this and in all these years was he ever asked to reprise this "classic" role? @@seanyates5769 worst possible casting choice and yet he's brilliant?. When this came out the only other person we thought might be worse would be Nathan Lane (Lame), Rob Schneider, or Mathew Broderick (who is miscast no matter what he's in). Thank God this was never revived.
