When I did disabled parking enforcement, we loved to go out on "Black" Fridays. We normally have two people go out at once. On "Black" Friday, we had two cars out with two people in each and still couldn't keep up! It's so gratifying writing tickets to people who abuse the disabled placards.
It would be nice that they give people with disabilities that need these parking spots jobs to hand out tickets I agree 100%. All it would take is a picture with an iPad and some kind of print out to give the people a ticket that are abusing the spot. Most of the people I find don't even have permits they just want to go in for a minute or two
My mother is handicapped and if I take her to a store or doctors, I will drop her off at the door and go park, even though she has a placard because I'd rather save them spots for people that travel alone and have to use them. Nothing wrong with me so, to me, there is ZERO reason I should ever park in those spots. People are pety and should be ashamed. They should increase the fines
LLB MAGA I hear you. Whenever I take my grandparents somewhere I do the same thing. Of course I also try to park at least half way back so it frees up spots closer
Thank you! My husband accompanies me on shopping trips. If I walk, he uses the handicapped space. If I use my electric scooter, we park at a handicapped space as there is room to unload and assemble the scooter without being in the traffic lanes, then he moves the car. That, however, brings the concern for a safe return to the car to load up my scooter into question. If they would put in low time, say 10 minutes, handicapped parking space next to the regular spaces, then we would feel it was a reasonable alternative. That would also be misused however. The real solution would be peoples’ respect to our laws regarding people with disabilities or just plain slowing down and being aware in places such as parking areas. After all, it isn’t just handicapped people you need to watch out for, but children and even pets. Yes, people need to keep their children and pets under control, but even the best parent can be distracted in a busy parking, lot sometimes. It only takes once to bring in a lifetime if misery. Drivers share that responsibility as well. I speak as a disabled driver as well as a disabled pedestrian.
LLB MAGA bless you, my children do the same thing for me, they also will watch to pick me up at the door, even though i have a tag, because we need policing in our big malls for the disabled parking, these guys were handing out 12 a day, they weren't working that lot very well then, because i can catch 12 in an hour at walmart as they don't care at all who is or isn't disabled and now they have stalls for people with children and still no car seats or children in the car i have complained and nothing ever is done
Loaners or family member should lose their card. Should have to carry a card with name showing they are entitled to placards. Fines should start at $1500, double with each additional offense and tow the car.. if they are habitual offenders, jail time. First jail 30 days, double from there. People do not care about handicap people and with little to no punishment, it will never change. Placards are too easy to get.
Themepark Actually, it's understandable. You're basically talking about officers dedicated to a single offense (or a tight group of offenses, I suppose). Don't get me wrong. I love seeing these offenders get their comeuppance. But I'm not sure that it's economically justifiable to have a lot of officers whose entire job is dedicated to enforcement of handicapped parking abuse.
Like the previous poster said, show their FACES! Also I love the 5,000 possible fine. I would like to see minimum fines of at least $500 with zero chance of less.
As a disabled person with a legitimate placard, who has to deal with the doctors and dmv (which is even more of a pain with said disability), this BS makes me absolutely livid
@@RedJoker9000 I said the DMV was a pain, and even harder to deal with than someone who is able-bodied. Going there and having to wait in those long lines is really difficult for someone with physical disabilities. I’m sure you have experienced that if you have a physical disability that limits your mobility. Or even one that makes it very difficult mentally. I have both issues.
In some states in the u.s the minimum fine is $850 for just having someone else's placard then another $850 for using someone elses card and$850 for actually being in the parking space
I am handicapped and in need of a heart transplant, but if I am doing good that day I park way away even thou I have a handicapped plate. If I am doing good that day I leave the handicapped spots for someone worse off than me
I've done the same only to come back to my vehicle later and find that the spot I left for someone worse off than myself, is now occupied by someone who doesn't need it at all. Sometimes, you just can't win.
Those reserved parking spots are for YOUR USE. You should always use them and let the police or parking enforcement deal with the reprobates who are parking there illegally. The fine should be a minimum of $500.00 and up for respect offenders. This would get their attention real quick and change their non caring attitudes and lazy ways.
@@owenmclain3327 Just because we have the permit doesn't mean we are - or should be - forced to use them every time; sometimes on good days, some people prefer the slightly longer distance, as it may be a rare time when they are actually able to physically handle a little exercise (not everyone, but definitely some).
1200 tickets at the minimum of $300 comes to $360,000. Not all tickets are at the minimum so this number should be much higher. Now if you paid a dedicated ticketing officer $60,000 a year, that pays for six full-time officers. And of course those same officers could be writing tickets for other infractions as well. The point I'm trying to make is often municipalities claim they don't have the resources to clamp down on these infractions while to me it seems like it should be self sustaining.
I know this is low priority for cops...so why not hire meter maids or people to do it...they could make enough money to pay for t heir own salary and then some ?!?!
It seems like hiring parking enforcement officers would pay for itself. And if at some point in the future, this becomes less of a problem, they can always lay them off, or possibly retask them.
I'm from the UK, and I'm wondering why these parking spots are so far away from the store? In the majority of cases over here, they are right near the entrance. That's a genuine question, I'm curious as to the positioning. That being said I'm glad to see people up for misusing the permits. We see it all the time over here and it's rarely dealt with.
When I go to the mall, I love to subtly point these guys out to mall security. They have the power to notify police of the incident since it took place on mall property. What I usually see later on is a big slip of paper under the wiper. On Black Friday, the people usually ask me, “Have you seen my car?” I also reply no.
@@4seeableTV I have a non visible handicap. When I go to Square One, I usually park in front of Walmart. From there, The Bay is about the furthest I can go before I start feeling it.
Where I live, people don't even bother with fake placards or license tags. Last year I had a temporary placard after knee surgery and was about to pull into a handicap spot when some woman with 2 diapered kids cut me off, parked, and dragged the kids into the supermarket. No placard or license tag.
This is great to see. In the u.k. this is a constant problem and it’s a main topic in the Disabled Drivers UK, magazine. The mag. has an annual Bay Watch campaign where major supermarkets are targeted on a set day.
Ever see a school bus doing it. I did, Mellen WI. Bus parked on street in front of school blocking cross walk, handicap space, with remainder in a regular space. Wish I turned around and taken pic.
My mother used to tell me to park in a handicap spot when I took her shopping. I told her I would drop her off at the door, go park in a normal spot then pick her up at the door when shopping was done. I always thought someone in worse situation then us could use that spot. Then my wife , double knee replacement was issued a permit. When she was in recovery we used the spots but now we don’t but she is about to get her feet operated on so we will use it more. By the way, because of a heart condition , congestive heart failure twice I have been offered a permit ( before my wife) but never took it using the same idea that there are people worse off. The problem is the enforcement isn’t often enough. People sit in their car while someone “ RUNS” in and shops . I would also like to see enforcement in mall parking lots where people think it’s ok to park in fire lanes . 2 min, 5 min or an hour, it’s still not legal to abuse these spaces. As I said, we need to up the enforcement! This story is over 6 yrs old popping up on my you tube today .
When I drove my mother around I kept her permit in my car, but if she wasn't in the car, I didn't even think of using it. So if it is good for one, others that abuse the permit should pay a fine so big, they will think again before trying it.
I'm disabled I'd like to see everybody that abuses disabled parking spots get a ticket. The sad thing is most people say you're only going in for a minute or they're just waiting for somebody while you're not supposed to do that and when they're told that what they're doing is illegal they don't seem to care so find them the full $5,000.
I live in Saskatchewan and my wife's aunty has a disabled placard. I drive her around everywhere and I still feel guilty taking up a disabled parking stall. And yes my aunty is with me when using it. I would never think about be disrespectful taking up a spot to gain closer parking.
😂😂😂😂😂. I used to be a security office at Lincoln Tech. People would park all the time in these spots. I'd catch them when were either TRYING to park there or when they were about to leave. Id notify them that we were checking the parking permits with the local authority's. " Almost always they would say the accessible parking permit belonged to their mom or friend. We cleaned out the accessible parking each semester.
I learned from a young age that "violators will be towed/fined" meant "don't you dare... or else" and that you can only use the permit if the person it belongs to is there...no matter what. And I've even been in the car when the driver uses the disabled license plate (for his mom) to park in a handicapped spot when he and I were the only people in the car, and it never sat well with me - the next time I get the chance, I will find out whether he is still doing it, and confront him if necessary.
I noticed a driver who failed to display his permit so he could have run into trouble since the police might not know he was entitled to it. Angrily he pulled it out of its hiding spot when I mentioned it to him.
Sometimes we forget to put it up, and it's almost always an honest mistake - but some people get very defensive when others bring it to their attention, because it can seem like the person is challenging their disability or their right to have the placard just because they forgot to put it up. So please be careful what you say and how you say it in that kind of situation, because it can easily be interpreted the wrong way. However, for me personally, hanging it up is often the very last thing I do before I get out of the car and taking it down the first thing I do when I get back to the car, no matter how long I will be in the car before pulling out, so that's something to consider as well - unless he was already heading into wherever it was and it wasn't hanging up, it honestly wasn't your place to say anything; if I had been him, I would have done the same thing.
I’m handicapped and have a permit. When I see someone without a handicap using the space I say in a loud voice “look at that man, his handicap is he can’t read”
Here in NJ, there is stricter law. If you park in a handicap spot with out a sticker or a handicap plate or placecard. Your car will be going on trip to the impound yard. Depending on the towing company. The $250 first offence is cheap. The tow could be as high as $1,000. Depending on the mileage the tow is to it's storage lot. "In New Jersey, the penalty for illegally parking in a handicap spot is $250. Subsequent offenses come with a minimum $250 fine or up to 90 days of community service." That was in Dec 2017.
Thanks Nick, i am Michigan we have both Red and Blue and handicap plates. I am guessing the Plates are more permanent and the others are issued with time limits. But i will never park someones car in the handicap parking, it would be bad if someone who needed the space then see me running to the car, that should be a ticket for sure.
@@lutkedog1 In Arizona the red placard is temporary, like after surgery, with an end date. Blue is permanent. I have permanent disability status and have a placard because I have vanity plate and the wheelchair emblem doesn't fit. I carry my tag in my purse so I can use it no matter which of our vehicles I'm driving. I also take my 92 year old father places so it comes in handy. If I'm by myself I usually park in a regular space.
In Louisiana, you have to have a mobility photo ID card issued along with your placard or with your handicapped licence plate in addition to your driver's license. Takes care of the problem of who the permit belongs to. All states should do this.
6 officers handing out 1,200 tickets a year with fines ranging from $300 to $5,000. They are receiving a minimum of $360,000 to a maximum of $6,000,000 a year. This is a huge money maker for the city! They sure don’t want to stop it
I'd be more than happy to volunteer on a Saturday morning every so often just to help enforce this. I have older family members who actually need these spots, and the idea of others taking them just for convenience is frustrating. When you do see people parking in these spots, though, please remember that not everyone's disability is so obvious. I just notices this report is 7y old. Thanks algorithm. I wonder if things have gotten better?
Nothing in this world pisses me off more than a young (20-25 ) person with a handicap placard pulling into in a handicap spot ,jump out of the vehicle and literally run into a place, and 15 minutes later running back out , and then sitting in their vehicle pecking on their phone for 20 minutes ,
Even worse now with COVID. You would think with the easy availability of parking during a lockdown, there wouldn't be anyone abusing disabled parking. It's the direct opposite now with ride-share drivers who can't walk more than 10 feet to pick up a food order from McDonald's that they have to not only use up the one disabled parking spot but also the 2+ spots for mobile orders.
My Mom had a placard and couldn't drive anymore. I only used it when she was in the car. I never thought to EVER use it when I was alone. But people do it without even having a placard here. The police do NOTHING.
If permits arent returned to the disabled owners, that punishes the crime victim? Maybe add a theft of handicapped permit to the parking fine. That would go on a public record for jobs, housing, bank loan, etc, and be an additional deterence.
I wish there was more of this. I have back and respiratory issues so i have a placard. I only use it when i feel i need it since i know there are others off worse than me
two things, first you have no legal requirment to show the placard. That would be self incriminating evidence and second all you have to do is say that the disabled person if being picked up and you are going to go get them
I'd volunteer, no charge for writing them. I would be honest about who can and can't park also. I'm not disabled ,but the people who are need those places.
I confronted a guy that parked in a handicap parking at our local Walmart. He said he was going on to get his grandmother. I waited for him and he walks back to his truck with just a small bag. I asked him if his grandmother was inside the bag.🤣
Roland moreno - What happens where the Handicapped Person was at Home (not there with the car), but they need it to get around tomorrow and you have impounded their car. The Fraud is being committed by the Driver AND they alone should be punished.
I went to the mall near my house in houston and had to drive around for 15 minutes to find an open handicapped spot. I guarantee 50% or more were being abused.
It took me a long time too get a disabled plackard and I can hardly find a spot. I see so many people abuse the spots. I've started too say something it's not right.
This irks me. I have a handicapped grandma and have her placard in my jeep I only use it when she is with me that is it. Locked in my glove box. Guess what I do whenever she's not with me I park legally and walk like I should. So that space is available for real handicapped folks
