Several years ago, my wife and I spent the night in a Heilbronn hotel on our way to Austria. In the morning, we mentioned to a youngish woman at the hotel's desk that we had lived in Heilbronn from 1970 to 1974 when I served in 3d Battalion 84th Field Artillery. Our apartment was near Wharton Barracks, but I worked at Badenerhof Kaserne and at Artillery Kaserne in Neckarsulm. The woman informed us we were mistaken, that there never had been American Kaserne in Heilbronn. We showed her on a city map where Wharton Barracks had stood, and where the remaining apartment buildings still are being used. I'm not sure she believed us. We thought it was sad that this recent and important part of the city's history apparently is not widely known. For us, it was a wonderful place to live. And the reason for the presence of the American military in Heilbronn and Neckarsulm should not be forgotten.
When I first arrived at my duty station, 26th signal battalion, we were told the story of the bombing of Heilbronn. We were told that the leaders (civil or military?) told the people of Stuttgart to extinguish all visible light and the people of Heilbronn to turn on all their lights, as to enable the German Air Force to find their way home. That’s the story because Stuttgart was a more industry laden area.
My dad was in 100th Infantry Division and watched from the hillside as tanks bombarded the city following the aerial attack. Tanks bombarded the city following aerial bombardment because US troops who entered the city after white flags were flown from windows were massacred. He said the artillery bombing campaign was merciless.

If you are going to mention the bombing, please add the reason why it was bombed. If you commit mass murder you get life or a death sentence. Germany had neither . Now people make them out to be the poor little victim in my opinion
