It doesn't need to be redefined because definitions are accurate. Only what need to be done is to console kids finally accept them. Witcher series is Action RPG. It has significant character choices what literally is role play. Leveling and stats is tactical suplement from RPG systems, not role play itself. Because you can create own piece of wood, it doesn't mean that it is a character, same as having predefined character with actually broad range of ways to play him doesn't make game not-RPG. On the contrary. Best cRPG's usually have fixed charters with world actually answering to they personal choices. Because someone think that cart is a car, it doesn't make it not a cart.

It isn't confusing. It is just that console kids refuse to accept that it isn't a console genre. Explanation for dummies: Role-play is type of party game where group of people act as fictional characters. Genre split on LARP (live action role-playing game) where people literally use requisites and costumes. And Tabletop RPG (aka Pean and Paper) where people do that purely narratively, usually using support of Tactical-RPG systems like Dragon and Dungeon to randomize repeatable and chance based actions. cRPG's are computer simulation games simulating mentioned party games. They split on simplified combat focus "Hack and Slash" and exploration focus "Dungeon Crawl". Most early cRPG's were Dungeon Crawl due to inability of using complex trademarked systems. So called "jRPG" are Tactic-Adventure games, what alongside Action-Adventure and First Person Shooter evolved from early Dungeon Crawl games. But they aren't actually representative of the genre. Most modern uses of term "RPG" make no sense and is in denial of it being old PC genre. Simplest definition of RPG is game with significant character choices.

Because they aren't real cRPG's. Tactic-Adventure games originated from Wizardry, what is simplified form or cRPG. But lost all actual role play elements what already barely were present in DC's. And you know what? First Person Shooters also originated from DC's and yet no one cry that they aren't RPG's. And for clarity I'm huge fan of jRPG, but I'm sick of people misusing terminology.
