Every publisher now wants every consumer to spend eight hours per day playing a game they sold them for $70, and spend thousands more on microtransactions while they do it. The problem is there's only so much time in a day and consumers only have so much money. If every company keeps doing this, they will find that only a handful of games can maintain sustainable dedicated followings like that simply because there will be too many games competing for dominance in a limited pool of consumer man hours. If you're playing Call of Duty all day, you're not playing Battlefield, and if you're playing Fortnite all day, you're not playing Player Unknown's Battlegrounds. But every game wants to be the next big thing, and they're all doomed to take an ever smaller slice of the pie as the market becomes increasingly saturated. And it gets worse because these publishers' shareholders expect constant growth; a growth which they can't possibly maintain forever. Once the growth reaches a plateau, investors will start selling off their shares and these companies will start to _lose_ money, and then they won't be able to keep churning out these games.
Capitalism. The issue is capitalism. That's also why the crunch is a problem. If the studio was a worker coop there wouldn't be crunch and there would be less of a tendency for people to put in nasty exploitative shit, since often people lower on the totem pole dislike doing blatantly unethical shit like that
If you sell your game in China then you basically have infinite customers. So what if they want you to sell your soul and look the other way when they steal your customer's data.
Problem is you cant pirate on the newest consoles, not for a while at least. This is where the highest prices are. Unless these prices get transferred to pc.
Console games are 80€ in greece. The average monthly salary is less than 1000€. What's funny is that at least for now the steam price for games hasn't increased
Yeah exactly. Nobody is going to pirate when a game or service is actually and properly priced, but if you’re too un reasonable you’re bringing the pirates over as if your waving a carrot in the the air to some pigs.
Only problem is when this happens then console manufacturers start making iron fence security similar to the switch, and then you're out of luck. Now PC on the other hand...
Imagine spending $70 on an intentionally unfinished game, then have to buy their “annual season pass”, which is basically paying for planned patches, AND THEN having to buy DLC stuff for a better gaming experience.
Haha yeah big games are kinda shit imo. I got my first console upgrade when I got halo 3. 3 odst and reach were both incredible too. I then also really started enjoying the Forza series too. Halo 4 killed the chances of me getting an Xbox One and then I built my first PC. Pc gaming is just more flexible. You are less likely to see these half assed $60/70 games and more likely that you'll find a game that you can see grow for a fraction of the price. A few games thst I've picked up early access thst sum up to less than $60 include : $15 Kerbal Space Program, $15 minecraft, $15 beam NG drive, $15 wreakfest. And I think I paid even less for most of those games. Not to mention you also get access to modding so thst just widens the gap. I find in far more interesting to see a game grow properly and I'm a lot more likely to purchase the next game that these developers make as they have built my trust with them.
Buy the games years after they are released when they are already patched and with the expansions included, during steam discount season right after the new year.
Not even one of my favorite games, Ark survival evolved, can get away with that kind of shit. granted, they've had price drops before down to 20 bucks, which is amazing considering how big the game actually is, but honestly, I can't see it with anything. Not even them.
nah, it's intentional. I mean....the visuals of his videos last year was very trippy on it's own way. This year is Trippy audio, last year was trippy visuals.
Or just wait a few years till the tech is more affordable and the game is either 20$ or less. I did that with Metro Exodus and still doing it with other games. Luckily AAA devs don't decide where the money in my wallet goes, I do. Besides there are other hobbies one can pick up. Reading, cars, bikes, paintball, airsoft, robotics, etc etc.
They for some reason dont do it. There is less and less sailing as I can see. Grew up with older brother who was sailing and tought me and im the only one amongst my Friends who still does it
The worst part is that the increase in price is only going to line the CEO pockets more instead of going to the developers who actually crunch and make the game.
Maybe, we can get developers to sell their games through means that don't involve going through the middleman in order to work around this? I've read that a theoretical way to support music artists is to pirate the music, then send a check to the artists...
It's about the investors. Basically shareholders only really care about companies making money, so the CEO has to be seen to making as much money as possible to pay out more in dividends every year otherwise the share price falls and the CEO is booted out.
Then the developers get fucking death threats on Twitter because the game released poorly (*cough* Cyberpunk *cough*) Then those same idiots who send those threats go and defend the 70$ price tag like it’s nothing. I definitely play games all of the time but the “general gaming community” is full of fucking idiots.
Inflation? Buddy, the FED and the SEC has made sure Inflation has been trapped in it's pressure cooker. We haven't even seen inflation. Money Printer go Brrr, the "Federal Reserve" gets filled up, and the rich get richer at the cost of our lives. Trust me. The second they let the inflation actually slip is the second the whole world sees America implode under the weight of it's own exponentially compounding debt.
That's the advantage of being a patient gamer, I buy my games a few years after they were released at a heavy discount and with all necessary patches plus interesting mods if I want to. The only downsides are having to avoid spoilers and if the game focuses heavily on multi-player most of the player base has already moved on and those that remain tend to be the ones who are insanely good at it, so there's that.
I’d love to do this. However Nintendo doesn’t ever do this. Years later and Botw is still 60%. Donkey Kong Tropical freeze even though it was released on the Wii U yeeeeears who. Is still 60 bucks
@@devideby_zero8596 occasionally, products like these have sales. I believe, only a few months ago, games like BoW went on sale at a 33% reduce price on the Nintendo store.
No game above $5 should have microtransactions. Those are supposed to be reserved for shitty mobile games, but now they're invading our pc's and consoles.
The loss of the "AA" or middleware games greatly harmed the industry by pricing out developers who wanted to try out risky game ideas from releasing. And it really wasn't till the last seven years that the indie game scene on pc has been able to fill that again. I'm glad it came back
This is called capitalism. The "logical" thing for any corporation to do is make more money. That is why they exist in the first place. They do not care about the consumer.
thats just capitalism. the systems so damn stupid that it makes automation a bad thing. Imagine explaining to somebody a thousand years ago that there will come a day where nobody has to work, and that thats a bad thing.
Then you got south American countries where many people are poor yet the cost of a game you would buy for 90$ new in North America costs like 150$ down there
I noticed something strange this Christmas when I felt like playing Arkham Origins. The 360 game is indeed backwards compatible for the Xbox One but a digital copy does not exist on the Microsoft store. My only option was to buy an old physical copy of the game and install it. Lame af
@@youwouldntclickalinkonyout6236 If I were to buy another PC it wouldn't be for gaming especially because I dont play games as often these days due to school and work
While I would love to imagine that the people who are angry about this price hike will actually defy it in someway, it'll most likely end up like a EA/Activision type situation. Where people will claim on the internet that they're angry, however, they'll still throw money at the corporations doing the bad things, reinforcing their behavior
Kinda reminds me of Nintendo. Their business decisions can be pretty asinine, with many nodding in agreement to that, only for all thst to be ignored when they drop a good game
Fucking EA. God they're awful. You know the Sims games? Well Sims 4 has been constantly critiqued for how garbage and empty it was from the start and how you basically need mods to make it playable let alone fun. Creation is super busted, and storytelling is near impossible. Only good thing is the graphics (and as a mac user, that the mac version is truly ported to work on mac and not a shitty emulator like the otherwise super good 3 was). Currently, if you buy all of the game, the deluxe version of the base game and all the expansion, game, and stuff packs, and the newly minted kits, all at retail price when they came out, no sales or bundles, it costs 899.58$. It's absolutely nuts. Each pack has very little in it, and even after years we still haven't gotten everything that was in 3, and most of it is so badly done. Like the Star Wars expansion, most people didn't want it, some thought it'd be interesting to have Jedi's and use the force, sorta like how other past supernatural types worked, but it was literally just an advertisement for star Wars Land at Disneyland/DisneyWorld. Literally an exact copy. Impressive in the detailing, but that's all it was. The clothes for the world are literally the costumes cast members wear. And no fun jedi powers, it was just a vacation area with very little to actually do, and nothing that interacted with the rest of the game. They really made people pay 20$ for an ad. Fuck EA. There's a reason I haven't spent a single penny on this game, and actively help with getting the Windows crack to work for Mac. They treat the people at Maxis like shit, don't let them actually be creative and put out fully developed packs with a lot in them, stopped making the game compatible for machines running only 32 bit and only have updates for 64 bit (making the money people with older computers basically wasted) reference common mods in game descriptions showing they know how much those mods are needed to make it playable, and expect 900$ from me? Fuck no. There are good artists on the team, some of the "gurus" are really creative and knowledgeable, some of the stuff is really pretty. But there is maybe 200$ tops worth of game so far, not 900$. If you want to see the proof I'm not exaggerating, and the lengths procrastination and morbid curiosity will go to, here's my numbers: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aqr6vLX066lm7EAnxGWnMWlud5a1zOjn5lZXS6Kt7Fg/edit?usp=sharing

Movies are also a weird market. They get most of their money from what is essentially a one use rental (box office), followed by licencing from streaming services. Unlike games, which depend on sales, the amount movies make from retail sales is miniscule in comparison. So while I agree games should be cheaper, the comparison isn't really fair.
yes and no. while movies are about as expensive as modern games, games do still sell less than movies. despite what many belive, gaming isnt as mainstream now as other mediums like music or movies and there is a significant age cut at which people just dont buy games anymore as well as a huge margin of young people that have never bought a 60$ game or played many games exept maybe some mobile ones or as a kid on a handheld. I entierly agree with the video and that the price increase is just bad but i can not see a world where you can play a new AAA Game for 20$. The sales for that are just not high enough. (Also movies make alot of money by reditributing the same product diffrently: movies make money from box office sales, Blu Ray/DVD sales, by licencing it to Netfix and so on and by licensing it to potentially a few hundrered tv stations around the world. So oftentimes they kind of sell the same product to the same customer twice or even thrice
@@Txkato Your points are all reasonable and fine. I haven't bought a £60/$60 game for years and years. I have become a cheap miser who spends not a penny if he can help it. And I completely agree that video games do not sell nearly as well as films. But remember GTA V made $800 million in a single day. So well made AAA games can make their money back, if your AAA game doesn't make your money back ask yourself the following: "Is our game a bit crud?"
I can't even remember the last time I spent more than $30 on a game. I mostly buy indie stuff or wait for games to go on sale. Especially in an age where devs just release half the game later as DLC, I just don't spend the cash anymore.
Same here. I have a huge wishlist on Steam and just wait for them to drop below 20 bucks. Sometimes it takes a few years but being patient pays off (literally).
Yeah I usually wait for the $20 “Ultimate Edition” that includes all the DLC, patches and bug fixes. A lot of new games these days go on sale for $30 only 3 months after release. Or even better, they get added to Xbox game pass less than a year after release.
I stopped buying new games since i was 15.I do however honor the work they put in, and buy the game legaly, only at a discount becouse i also honor my work.
I don't think I've bought a new game on console (aside from switch games because nintendo) for years. I got crash for Christmas but I'm happy with what I have and getting free games every month
Considering how many games are out there and how often they go on sale there's little reason to buy them at full price when they first come out. I'll never get to all the games on my wishlist as it is.

Thing is, most poeple, like the overwhelming majority of the customers of the AAA market are either fossils playing candy crush or regular Joes and dude bros buying one CoD and/or FIFA each year. Those people don't even know about the whole pricing concern and if you explained it to them, chances are they wouldn't care.
Because its economics you can go to the grocery store to by soda for 99 cents even 69 cents but when you get it from a restaurant its 3 to 4 dollar's With Game's there multiple cogs like marketing license paying employees developing the games the problem with Tyler's argument is he's making every company basically EA or Activision
@@demonking-zm3rs That's because company like EA and Activision are the one's pushing for this change for the rest of the industry digital distribution alone can make up for rising cost even then this industry is mostly indie or AAA with most of the more higher quality mid shelf game developers ( platinum games, monolithsoft, obsidiane etc) that care making good games try to get support from big publishers (sony, nintendo, Microsoft , Activision) rather solely depend on money made from individual games which may or may not become successful

With every new title in the last couple of years starting anywhere from $70-$90 Australian Dollarydoos, when I saw Doom Eternal start at $120 I realised why I haven't bought any AAA games in half a decade. Indie developers just seem to respect my time and money a lot more.

You don't even need to wait years. Other than Nintendo games, the games usually go to like $20-$30 in like 6-9 months. People need to learn to be patient and stop with the FOMO.
I think it also depends on the game. Some, very few games are worth 50 or even 60 dollars while more crappy gams are only worth about 10 or 20 dollars.
Well mostly because devs already pay a fee to Nintendo to even publish their game physically on their console specific cartridge. Xbox and ps4 use bluray
@@Azaurus1 well that's general manufacturing of said cartridges but the devs still have to pay royalties to Nintendo for doing so. That's why after all is accounted, games still cost 60
They're still insanely expensive though. I thought their new Mii game would be like $20-30 not $60. Like it looks fun and all but I don't think it's worth that much.
There's also the fact that more expensive games are affordable to less people. If Karen is unwilling/unable to pay the upfront cost for the videogame, then bobby won't be able to trick her kids into paying $50000 for a star shaped reticle.

Do you really think the only increase in development costs of games in the last few decades has been from in game stores ? These conversations are pointless because people dont know how games are made or the current state of the industry, the reason games have less quality and more microtransactions is because developers have to reduce cost and increase revenue to make the same profits, as the development costs are going up but the price is the same.
