THANK YOU! so much Anthony for your straight forward plain old english instructions on how to put my 8mm cassettes onto DVD. It is refreshing to have someone that gives instructions on how to do this for those of us that are not very computer savy. I will be watching more of your videos. keep them coming. :)

So thankful to have found you! I purchased a Magnavox DVD recorder/VCR many years ago and never got around to setting it up and using it. It's still in the box! I took out the directions tonight because I now need to use it. They looked so complicated... then I thought, maybe someone has some how to videos on RU-vid... And low and behold there you were doing exactly what I need to learn to do! Thank you for being here!

Good video. Would love to see more on this transferring theme. For example, I still get confused by things like DVD-R DVD+R DVD-RW and which you have to format at the start of the process and which are already preformatted. Also the options the combo gives you with regard to splitting the content of the original tape into say, five or ten minute segments etc.

Nice tutorial. I would like to offer an additional tip. If your camcorder supports S-video, you can get a better quality transfer than if you were using the yellow composite cable. S-video will do the trick if you're transferring Video8 or Hi8 to DVD. However, if you're transferring Digital8 or miniDV, I'd recommend you use Firewire (sometimes abbreviated as DV) to make the transfer, simply because those tapes are digital to begin with and personally I'd rather not convert to analog when making the transfer. If the tape is analog, go with S-video. If the tape is digital, go with Firewire.

@WhiteJarrah
@WhiteJarrah 6 лет назад
Sorry for the delay. If your camera is Digital8, you should use the Firewire or DV to make the transfer: www.amazon.co.uk/Firewire-pin-Cable1-8m-IEEE1394-out/dp/B001D8DK9G It's essentially a standard definition equivalent to HDMI. Since Digital8 is a digital video signal, it's best to keep it digital. Using the yellow, white and red connectors will downgrade the picture.

Hello and Good Morning Mr. Wheeler! I want to thank you first for your instruction video on transferring VHS movies to DVD for the older VHS tapes using a combo recorder. I have done all of my family's tapes and also all of the tapes for my son-in-law's family. I am now in the process of attempting to record his family's Hi8 cassette tapes using my combo recorder. I am at the point where I have the camcorder hooked up to the combo recorder which, in turn, is hooked up to my television using A/V cables. I am able to see the picture clearly and hear the sound clearly. However, when I hit record, the little red dot shows up on the TV screen as if it is recording but when I check the DVD disc using Disc Display, it shows the Title 1 as empty. Nothing is being recorded on to the DVD. I am using the AV2 setting as that is the one that worked the best without getting a ton of static in the picture. I do not find that I am able to find under "Settings" for the DVD combo recorder anywhere that I can choose "Front" as you had indicated. Any ideas of what I might need to do or as to what I am missing in steps or set up? I am wondering if I should use a 4-pin "S" cable instead because, honestly, the only way I could get the picture clear on the TV was actually not plugging the yellow plug into the spot for it but by just having it touch the outside of the plug and getting it to stay in place. Crazy, I know. Help!!! :-) I am using an Insignia VHS/DVD combo recorder if that helps in any way.
@dahdigital1
@dahdigital1 5 лет назад
Gale Sisul, as I read your post I am puzzled also why, since you get clear picture and sound to your tv monitor. The only thing I can think of right now is -- with your combo recorder have the selector set to DVD and press the record button , not the dubbing button.
@gsisul
@gsisul 5 лет назад
@@dahdigital1 - Anthony, thank you for your reply. I am pressing the record button and not the dubbing button. I used the dubbing when I did the large VHS tapes and everything worked perfectly for those. This time I am using the record button and the red circle shows up on the TV screen but nothing was recording. I have gone out and purchased an "S" cable and am going to try that. Again, thank you for your reply and wisdom! It is greatly appreciated!

Anthony, may I ask what seems like a silly question? I just followed the instructions on how to use D.Dubbing and was able to create DVDs from my old VHS home movies and now its time to move onto my video cameras. My question is, as you explained to hook up the RCA cables to the component (recording device) system, do I still leave the already connected RCA connectors that I had connected to the TV and recording device that you explained in your first tutorial?. Because as I did connect just as you said, to the front of the recording device I was unable to get a picture on the TV I was able to get sound but no picture. Ugh... Can you help me?
@dahdigital1
@dahdigital1 7 лет назад
Marnie Haley, You have transferred your VHS tapes to DVD using a combo recorder. And now you want to connect your camcorder to your combo recorder to record from your camcorder. I recommend connecting your combo recorder out put using the HDMI out and an HDMI cable to a flat screen TV. There are so many different camcorders that I can be specific about your connection, however I suggest that you look at your camcorder for some kind of video out and connect that to your combo recorder. try playing back something from your camcorder and use the controller from the combo recorder to select the input, as soon as the combo recorder recognizes the input signal from your camera it should show up on the TV. At that point you should be able to start reording.

Hi. Thank you. Can these dvd recorder combo units re-record over recordings on the dvd using the dvd-rw discs ? Or once you transfer video on to these dvd-rw discs, they can (not) be used again ? Normally dvd-rw (Re-Writable) discs can be reused like vhs tapes on computers right ? So they should still be reusable on these dvd recorder combo units correct ? Thanks. ANYBODY KNOWLEDGEABLE Please Reply Soon.

Zaina Bibi, Yes, just connect your yellow rca cable to your Sony 8mm camcorder and the other end of that cabe yellow to the yellow input on yor combo recorder. The other output from your Sony 8mm Camcorder "the black" , I recomend you use a rca splitter connector that has two rca male connections, plug those two into the left (white) and the (red) rca input on you combo recorder.

Thanks for the excellent video. I found this video, the day after I muddled through it myself. Have you thought about recording the camera tape directly into a computer. The reason I'd want to do that is so I can edit it. One problem is the file format is VOB and not compatible with my Corel Video Studio software. I've thought about getting a USB adapter so I can record into the computer. I could also convert the VOB file to MP4, but it seems to loose a bit that way. Your recorder must fairly new because it has a HDMI output (mine has composite cables). One hurdle with mine is with getting a slow enough DVD ( max is 8x). I can only find those on rewritable dvd's. But it's fun doing this and seeing the old movies from 60 years ago.

Be careful however there are units that look identical to combo units that only record a vcr tape and not to DVD.

Still kinda wish someone had made an 8mm to VHS adapter, similar to how they did a VHS-C adapter. Oh well. I'm sure there was a reason they didn't (what that is, I don't know)
@dahdigital1
@dahdigital1 7 лет назад
dabhdude, over the years I have had negative experiences with VHS-C adapters. For that reason I prefer recording form the VHS-C camcorder.
@dabhdude
@dabhdude 7 лет назад
What type of issues, and which adapters (since I know there is a mechanical one and a manual one)?
@WhiteJarrah
@WhiteJarrah 7 лет назад
+dabhdude 8mm doesn't convert to VHS like that. One tape has a smaller width than the other and both formats require very different head system in order to be read. For the same reason, Betamax is incompatible with VHS. How the data is written on the tape is also very different. VHS has the audio information written along one edge of the tape and the tracking information along the other (which is why sound or picture can drop out if the tape is damaged along edges) with the video recorded in a series of diagonal lines along the middle of the tape. Video8 on the other hand wrote both the sound and video along the middle of the tape. So such an adapter is impossible. Not sure if you still care about VHS and 8mm, but if you are looking for convenience, Sony did release a few 8mm/VHS combo recorders back in the day. If you can find one of those on ebay, you could try feeding the video output into the inputs on a DVD recorder.
@dabhdude
@dabhdude 7 лет назад
That sounds interesting...and expensive. :/
@WhiteJarrah

Just throwing it out there. A VHS/video8 combo recorder is the closest you'll ever get to such an adapter.
