Please see vital step left out from this video at my linked RU-vid video • Update, how to transfe... Transfer your family VHS tapes to DVD. Simple process using VHS/DVD combo recorder.
You might be interested to know that 11 years after you made this video, I had to buy a used VHS to DVD player to replace an old one that was stolen from me when I moved. I long ago forgot how to transfer videos and was stuck for two days with a unit I believed was malfunctioning. But your clear instructions pointed out one step I overlooked and I am now happily transferring videos. Thank you for your helpful video.
What a nice man he is. He's obviously very intuitive in this excellent kind of tech. I bet he's one of the very few people these days that still has tremendous respect for VHS tapes, and he's not alone on that one. Even though he will copy his VHS tapes to DVD, he will never do away with his tapes because he's someone that's still willing to observe that tape will always be the original format for what is now being produced today. If it wasn't for tape, we wouldn't have what we have today.
My dad passed in 2016 and I have been slowly gathering the equipment to convert our old VHS tapes to DVDs to save them forever. I am in the final stages of "finalizing" the tapes. I could NOT figure out how to do it with a universal remote, but i've ordered the exact model remote and will do the set up button to finalize them. I can't thank you enough Mr. Wheeler! I am in tears typing this comment. I am forever thankful and grateful to find your video! I hope you are doing well and would love to hear and update as I see this is from 12 years ago! Wow!!!
OMG Anthony, I cannot thank you enough for making this video... I just bought a. new old stock(2015) Emerson ZV427EM5 DVD Recorder/VHS Recorder combo which looks exactly like the unit you have bit I know several companies just use a basic body and button kit so several brands can look identical. Now this is probably my 3rd unit like this, my previous one suddenly crapped out and the circuit board just froze and stayed confused blinking open without opening the DVD door anymore. It was another new old stock unit I'd bought from ebay 10 years ago!!! Which today is all you can really expect from a consumer grade unit anyway... if I get 8 to 10 years from this one, I'll be happy but I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the damn thing to just record a tape to a blank DVD well this is the first such combo I've bought that has a RECORD button AND a D.DUBBING button so when you said to press that to record, it worked instantly!! Thanks so much again Anthony...duh!! It should've been easy for me at this point but I guess sometimes you're gonna get a device that can confuse the hell out of you no matter how many electronics you have and have had over the years! 🙄😉😊👍🏼💯
Anthony. I have taken back to Walmart two VHS to DVD Sanyo recorders because they did not work. I had even called customer service for help. They told me to take it back. I went online and saw that Toshiba 620 was recommended. So I went to Best Buy and purchased it. However, after hours of trying and throwing away multiple disks that did not record, I finally went on RU-vid and saw your video. OMG... the directions in both Sanyo and Toshiba manuals have told me to select DVD and push the record mode... THEN go on to select VCR and select "play" THEN push the dubbing button. Your video tells me not to push record mode on DVD but to begin the VHS tape and push Dubbing button. AFTER HOURS AND HOURS (I am persistent) of following the directions from those manuals, I did what you said and IT IS WORKING!!!!!!! Both the SANYO and TOSHIBA companies need to edit the directions and hire you as a consult!!!!
+Margi Jacobsen, Thank you for the very kind comment. It sounds like you have gone to a lot of trouble. I'm happy to hear that you got your VHS to DVD transfers working. I don't know how different or similar various models are but I used a MAGNAVOX DVD RECORDER / VCR ZV427MG9 on my RU-vid video. I bought it some time past, I don't know if it is still being made and sold.
Hi there this must have been a error made on behalf of Sanyo or Toshiba, if newer/later models have inaccurate instructions, then whoever has written the manual has done a poor job, and not done his/her homework and not followed the rules on how to write/produce a instruction manual that is easy to follow and not a headache to learn from. To produce a manual it has to be easy to follow and instructions easy and simple to follow, Sanyo/Toshiba do not have proof readers that will read or see if the products they market is easy to use, as all they care about is money.. Sanyo/Toshiba do not test each product they manufacture it's down to the consumer/End User to see how the product works, Not Sanyo/Toshiba, though it's their responsibility which they regret is not the fault of theres, in which fact it is...
He makes sure to tell you the right steps so people can follow it right. He is a great teacher and I thank him for being so patient at explaining the process.
Najia Tariq it’s so he can give the most clear, and concise instructions, step by step, to anyone who might be watching, and want to do this themselves.
@@dahdigital1 Hello Anthony i hope all is well with you. My question is can this only be done with a remote that says dubbing because mine only has the record button ?
Thank you so much! You just saved my life. I am so happy I realized what you say about the dubbing button. You have no idea how much this helped! Thank you again.
I never would have figured this contraption out without this video, it is absolutely fantastic, thank you thank you! My parents will be so happy to know their home videos from 30 years ago will all be saved now!
Thank you. I have the exact same player that you do so not only are your videos instructional, but also very easy to follow and I find the way you teach to be very intriguing and showed me how to bring the old VHS tapes i once loved back to life in DVD.
I was lucky enough to buy the same combo recorder that you use in this video. Your instructions were a great help. I was having trouble when pushing the record button, but your suggestion to use the dubbing button worked great. Thank you so very much for posting this video!!
Thank you so much! I had recorded VHS to DVD a year ago and watched your video and all worked great. I am just back at the project and had forgotten how to get to the "Finalize" menu. You are a lifesaver! Very concise and clear instructions. God bless you!
I should have come here first. You made this so much more easier to understand than the instructions included; however, I must admit that I am more of a visual person! My dad, who passed away 8 years ago, had transferred our family movies from film to VHS ages ago. My brother lives in California - moved there for a job - and has no family out there :( I wanted to transfer our VHS recordings to DVD and mail them to him in time for Christmas. I gave up last night after 3 failed attempts, and woke up early this morning to attempt the process again after I found your video. It worked perfectly! I was able to ship the DVD via FedEx this morning and he should receive it on Christmas Eve! Thanks!!
Anthony Wheeler Sir goodmorning I'm trying to transfer a vhs to DVD we have a combo vhs player with a DVD player in it can you do it on that one it's a Philips dvp721vr model. I hope you will be able to help me on this Mr Wheeler thank you so much
Thank you!! Finally someone explained this process in such detail for those of us not media inclined. Now I can transfer all of my most memorable vhs movies to dvd which will save a ton of space and make traveling with my movies much easier. These are hard to find older horror movies like Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee and more, which I recorded onto vhs over the years as they played on cable tv. And I already own this type recorder. I cannot thank you enough and I have saved this video to my favorites.
I love your demonstration. The directions had me totally confused.Call the company they tried to help me but it wouldn't record.Came to RU-vid and found your channel. Now I'm in business.. Thank you so much.
Thank You so much for this video.I've had this recorder for years and never could figure out why the dvd's would only play on this machine. Your explanation on how to use this machine was so simple and so clear. You should have written the directions for the companies manual. I've watched some other u-tube videos about how to use this machine and they are always missing some valuable information for completing the task. Thank you once again for making this video!
Thank you so much for doing this video. I purchased my magnavox recorder two years ago and tried several times to figure it out to no avail. I now understand how to convert my VHS into DVD and how to FINIALIZE them. Thank you again.
After watching this great tutorial, I bought the Funai (couldn't afford the Magnavox). The manual was impossible to understand. But thanks to your tutorial, I was able to do it in a snap! Thanks for posting!!
Ella, thank you for your comments. I started video recording my young family back in the early eighties. Many of my three son's early childhood, school activities, and sports were recorded to VHS video tape. I had well over one hundred tapes. After my children were grown no one seemed to have any interest in seeing those old video's. I transferred them to DVD's. And no I did not keep the old tapes, if for no other reason than the space it took to store them plus all of the DVD's I made.
Anthony, I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful video. Your instructions were easy to follow and helped me finish a project that had been taunting me for months! Happy New Year!
Thank you Anthony!!~ I had 32 VHS-C(?) (if that's what they are) to transfer and although I'm not quite as close to done as I'd like, I wouldn't be this far had I not had you helping me. I watched a lot of them but even when I thought I knew what I needed to know and could watch a much shorter tutorial, you were the one I had on pause and play all day long! I can't even imagine how many people are not timing their transfers correctly or how many more are wondering WHY the disks aren't playing at anyone else's house!! You saved me a LOT of hair for SURE!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this tutorial. It is giving us the confidence to try to make a dvd from our wedding VHS! Thank you again!
Thank you for this, looking at the manual can be overwhelming to say the least. Idk if you'll read this because of the age, of this video. But I'm glad you're here to she'd some light. Stay blessed whenever you are.
Love this video. It helped me transfer all our old home movies quickly and easily. Thanks for your clear and precise instructions and for going at a pace I could keep up with.
I've a video of my grandad who sadly passed away just over a year ago, I also have his daewood vcr-dvd recorder. I've tried numerous attempts and failed due to not finalising the disk! You have know idea how happy you have made my family members, I can now surprise them with their own copy. Thank you sir !
Excellent! I am planning on surprising my parents with converting all of our home videos from VHS to DVD (then to a computer file) but this helps a lot!
ANTHONY IS THE BEST I sorrender my title! P.S. Alway Edit in 2Hour mode. Your kids won't be unhappy 40 yrs from now..BillieGee WideWorld of Video est.1980
I know this is an old video, however, I borrowed this machine from a family member and cannot thank you enough for the details. My husband died last year and our family VHS tapes will be a treasure for my family, especially my children. God Bless!
If everyone on this earth could explain things like you have we would have a better world. Thank you so very much for just being who you are. Take Care Lisa
Thanks so much for this. Had my VCR combo in storage for 12 years and I found out that I needed to move some of these VHS tapes to DVD. I could not find manual and couldn't remember how to dub videos. Your video brought it all back to me.
My mother used to know how to do this but she forgotten and this video was a refresher! In great detail (also with your newest video) and it’s a huge help! Thank you!
just bought one of these so it's great to have this friendly fella tell me how to get it working instead of the instruction booklet. thank you very much!
Thank you so much for this video. It was extremely helpful to me. I have the very exact Magnavox unit you used for this video & you explained everything so well & with the visual video,it was so easy to understand. I like how you go very slow & show each step exactly what options to select. I was completely clueless on how to do this, & I lost my manual. So I went online to try to figure it out using the online manual. Your video was so much easier to understand & I am glad you did the video on adding titles to thumbnails.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS “HOW TO VIDEO” FOR US. WE’VE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT FOR A COUPLE YEARS & WANTED TO TRY AGAIN AFTER DOWNLOADING THE MANUAL, WHICH STILL DIDN’T HELP. THANK GOD FOR “YOU”. Amazing help, & I’ll try to do this while watching this & your doing just clips. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! ♥️♥️♥️
I want to thank you for posting this. I have it saved in my Favorites while I learn to use a system my daughter bought at a yard sale. I do see them at Walmart, now, too.
That's where I got mine yesterday. $179.00 Sanyo. Make SURE to get the dvd-r!! I never knew there was a difference and I couldn't believe it didn't say it on the box!!!!
Thank you Mr. Wheeler. I just purchased this item from HSN 3 days ago, and was about to send it back because they never mentioned that you must finalize the disc before you can use it in your PC. I actually recorded the same VHS disc twice thinking maybe I did something wrong. I then tried it on every electronic item in my home that would operate a DVD and nothing, however it did work in the recorder but that's it. Now that I have seen your video I decided to pop the disc back into the recorder and follow your steps and it worked!!! Actually, because I didn't finalize the disc the first time before taking it out of the recorder the steps were: 1. Setup 2. DVD Menu 3 Finalize Bless your ministry Mr. Wheeler and Season's Greeting Jackie from Memphis, TN
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed the video. I feel sure if you did a search for combo recorders you will find plenty. Amazon or B&H Photo New York, I purchased one from my local WalMart.
Marco, I have found that I can stop the recording and fast forward until I find more on the tape I want to record and hit the dub button to re start recording.
Thank you so much!!! You saved me a lot of time of reading the instructions… Thanks to your video I made the copy from VHS to DVD in only 5 mins. You're a genius!!!
I bought a brand new Funai VHS to DVD recorder 3 years ago, and it has been sitting for 2 1/2 years never used, I tried to use it when I bought it and the instruction manual might as well been written by an alien, it's a Japanese machine which tells me the operators manual was put together by a Japanese person, something is definitely lost in the translation which I find often in Japanese electronic product manuals, Anthony is a golden find, I'm betting he could replace EVERY written operator manual with a 10-minute video, now I can get my COVID Quarantined butt busy transferring 100+ hours of VHS to DVD, Anthony Wheeler is priceless, Thank You Sir
Thank you so much for this video!! I watched this the day I ordered my machine and I was ready to go when it arrived! I read over the manual also, but it was so easy to understand because I had this information prior to it arriving. I feel like I would have messed things up without this information. I especially benefited from the part where you advise to fast forward through the video to see what the length is. I was able to use the highest quality write speed upon finding out that the videos I was recording were each less than an hour. Again, thank you so much for this very informational video!
Thank you. This was very helpful. The problem is that when I try to play the DVD in my computer, it won’t work. I would like to download it into my computer so I can download into a hard drive. Can you advise.
+Anthony Wheeler have just started transfering 30 year old videotapes to dvd. Do videotapes degrade over time. My scotch 30 year old tapes dont look degraded.
+Anthony Wheeler anthony does your dvd/video combo record copy protected vhs tapes onto dvd?.if so could you give me the model number of the recorder please thanks.
Your instructions are perfect. Thank you for the great help. Saved me alot of grief. I want to know the steps to TITLE the DVD: Just want to enter the year of the home movie and the ages of the kids. The directions in the manual are maddening. They explain about making chapters and all kinds of fancy editing that can be done. But how to simply add a title? Thank you.
Betty Foster , I agree with you. "The directions in the manual are maddening" I have always just taken a felt tip pen and written on the DVD surface. I have been very busy lately, sorry.
You are such a nice person, God bless you. Thank you so much for taking your time to help people like me who are looking to digitally preserve their VHS-memories. We're of the VHS generation and without a method like this, our precious memories would only be in our minds and go with us, although they were once recorded. Thank you!
Rick, I didn't see a pause option on this matter, but when you stop the vhs tape for fast forwarding or for another tape, the dubbing stops. When you're ready for the next segment, press dubbing and so on. This also creates another chapter each time you do this.
that was future shop......on the downside the image was a bit choppier with the under $99 models......they are astronomical $300 plus ( canadian) now............the elgato or haupphage game capture devices.....good also for vhs or component video to 'hard-drive to dvd recording'......seem to be the cheaper dvd recorder replacement nowadays.....$140-$160 usually from best buy or walmart....i'd like to try one
Thank you so much! These instructions were perfect! I read the manual over and over and couldn't figure it out. Ten minutes of your video and I am off and recording! Thank you for making it so simple! :-)
you can finalize it years later.....as long as the recorder functions it will still finalize .....if it no longer works the disc can still be finalized on an identical model dvd recorder
If the DVD is just write once and there is no space left to record or you are sure you will no longer add anything to the remaining space, it is good practice just to go ahead and finalize it. I takes just a few minutes. My recorder has an option to unfinalize, but I've never tried it. I often go ahead and rip my DVD recording to a compressed video file on my computer for convenience so I generally immediately finalize the disc. I don't recommend finalizing a DVD during a thunderstorm or recording one for that matter as the power can fluctuate resulting in a disc that can only be used as a drink coaster. My recorder is the same model shown in the video. I have found it to be pretty dependable. If you get an error saying that your video tape is copy protected, you aren't out of luck, but you will require a video stabilizer and another VCR to play the tape from. Video stabilizers are legal for your own, private purposes as stated under Fair Use law. They are for the most part only available online through places like Amazon and eBay.
I just bought this unit, I have home movies from my childhood I want to put on youtube to email my mom for Christmas. If I copy them to DVD can I save them to my computer and upload to RU-vid? Any advice would be great. Thank you for your informative video! ~Molly
Molly Hopton , Molly I downloaded video software to my computer called Wondershare Video Converter. This software can copy my DVD's to computer and I can convert these files to video format for the internet. I am sure there is other stuff out there but that is what I have used.
Anthony Wheeler Thanks so much! I've just copied two VHS. I have about six more to go. My videos are only about 2-6 minutes long. My next question is, can they be finalized without a remote? I don't have the remote since I bought this unit second hand. Do you offer a finalization service? I would be happy to pay you if that's a service you offer. Thanks for your quick reply earlier! :)
Molly Hopton , There is no menu button on the combo recorder so you can't access the menu to finalize your DVD's. I suggest going on ebay to find a remote. The DVD's must be finalized on the unite they are recorded with.
Do you still use Wondershare Video Converter? I am still looking for a trustworthy software program so that I can upload these converted DVDs to RU-vid.
Hi I enjoyed your video's . I was wondering if you could tell me how to record from the TV to DVD. using this same combo recorder? I did record a TV show but I can not play it back on anything else except for the TV using the recorder. I used a DVD-R to record and did finalize it. Still can not get it to play on my computer or DVD players Can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong. thank you have a nice day Debbie
Debra Machado , You did record a TV show and it plays back on the TV using the recorder. My only thought is to put that DVD back into your combo recorder you made the recording with and follow the instructions and try to finalize the again.
Thank you very much. I have very bad eyesight and couldn't read the manual. This was much simpler to follow. I've now succesfully transferred over a 100 vhs tapes for friends and family at 5 dollars a piece. This thing pays for itself.
Ahh thank you so much .. I’ve put 7 tapes on to dvds only to find they work no where only my DVD player . I’ve read and read the instructions until I’m dizzy , and could not get my head around it . You make it so easy , tapes of my family are so precious and they have started to fad . Now I’m sorted .
EXTREMELY helpful! Thank you! I made the classic mistake you mention towards the end of your video...Finalizing. I saw the machine tell me I needed to, but I didn't know what steps I needed to follow to Finalize. Thanks to you, I do! GREAT video, Anthony! Thank you for making it for us all. :)
Thanks for the video! I guess it is finally time to start moving some recordings from VHS to DVD! Two notes: 1. The initial rewind step seems unnecessary, as you could just FF to the end, clear the counter, then REW to the beginning, thus saving the time of the initial rewind. 2. Many used VCRs (and combo VCRs) are sold without a remote, but it appears that a remote is absolutely needed for this operation.
Sir, this is one of the best tutorial vedio I have ever seen, you must have been a teacher or an educator or even better a loving patient farther. God bless you and thank you.
