The family of a correctional officer who died after trying to restrain an inmate at the Wainwright Unit in Lovelady, Texas held a news conference on Monday after seeing the video of the incident.
Cell extractions are a necessary de-escalation method employed when inmates refuse to adhere to correctional policy or direct instruction from authority. An inmate refusing to be restrained and initiating conflict from his individual cell infects the entire pod and emboldens his “fellow residents,” often resulting in flooding of the tiers, destruction of state property, and the setting of fires. If all officers in Eastham just said, “oh, alright. Let me know when I can come back” upon an inmate’s refusal to accept restraints, they would lose control of not just the pod but the entire unit immediately. Cell extractions are inherently physical but they are a necessary tool in operating any detention facility (whether it be a county jail, state jail, state/federal prison, or forensic psychiatric hospital). Not only are officers made aware of the potential dangers associated with cell extractions (and more generally simply working in a prison), but the dedicated cell extraction teams are acutely aware that risk accompanies what they are voluntarily participating in. This is a tragedy no doubt but it is not at all “indicative” of any corruption, conspiracy, or negligence on behalf of TDCJ or The State. There is a reason this story still captures headlines and that is because it is a tremendously unusual outcome.
Anyone who dares to work in any prison system needs to find another means of employment. Especially, when dealing with TDCJ. I went through the system years ago at the Connally Unit. I witnessed the escape of the Texas Seven. The corruption I've seen still amazes me to this day. It's a free for all and life or death once you get in there. I really should write a book.
You're right the american penal system is super corrupt anyone dying in jail or prison is usually foul play or set up. This why the TDCJ should come clean and tell what really happen but we know that they won't do that.
So sorry for your loss. This issue is on almost every job. The higher-ups don't care and they don't support the employees under them as they should. Prison is a very corrupt place to work in.
They're not speaking up because they are SCARED that they're going to get fired. OIG investigates these issues. When these facilities are privately owned it can be hard
The lights in that cell were off for a reason they clearly wanted that camera to be blurred out, why do you think that is they didn't go in to rhat cell, to be nice to that mate, i know the ststem and its very corrupt.
I stand with this Mother Officer lost his life @ work, not on the streets, Texas as a whole is a lost, starting with the local institutions, the state and the County, I am praying for all involved
Yeah who could imagine something bad could happen to a man who chooses to take a job to lock up others and treat them like animals given undeserved authority and un watched power . I feel for the mother but he should have thought about the job he was taking .
When you step into a prison it’s a life or death situation don’t get tricked into their system for 18.50hr. Let the warden break up the fight or the private investors 😂😂😂
Ex employee of tdcj and federal bureau of prisons the government. The federal prison system is more corrupt gping up to wardens, assistant wardens to the rank. In both systems there is that good ole boy clique buddy system. They do not like it when you question matters when it spoken verbally in tdcj. It is suppose to be on paper the policy. It is not suppose to be just verbal. In both tdcj and thecfederal they are short on guards endangering both guards and inmates. A guard is nit suppose to die or get killed on abstraction of an inmate.
Under staffed over populated too much over Time Prison corporation Financial Gain only interest Elementary School to prison pipeline Mental health of staff And prisoners Corrupt smuggling drugs inside Sorry for your Loss Hopefully this will be the whistle blower to make concrete changes that will benefit the staff and inmates to bring humanity focused first not just corporations profits 🙏
"Brother Mohammed" the "community activist" is a vulture swooping down on this grieving mother and looking for a payday. The sad thing is that he'll probably get it, and then be gone soon after.
He must have went into that cell alone or first . Doesn’t make since to me unless this inmate was a trained hand to hand combat killer . What was his cause of death ? Was this a prison with corrupt guards and one didn’t make it out there clearly hiding a lot of information. State needs to answer for this family to have peace .
Every day that an officer walk into the unit they know the risk. Policies are there and everyone is suppose to read and sign off on them but rather or not people follow them is a different story. Changes are definitely needed but it would take forever to reform the system
I just recently got out of TDC and I'm telling they do not care about inmate or officers. I've seen so much in there this time around and truly disappointed on how things there are kept from the public. Plane State jail and Carol young medical unit someone needs to go in unexpected and see what we all see there. I've seen inmates dying at Carol young and laying in soil in their own urine and crap and hear them say no you can't help clean it up. People are human no matter what they do. There is some officers that care about rehabilitation and some it's just a paycheck. Texas doesn't care I promise you not even about their employees
THIS IS AWFULLY EGREGIOUS TO SAY THE LEAST & JUSTICE WILLLL) BE SERVED. GET YOUR REST BABY BOY & TO YOUR PARENTS: I'M SO HEARTILY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS . SN: WHYYYYY'S THE LAWYERS MISPRONOUNCING THEIR OWN CLIENT'S NAME? EVEN AFTER THE MOTHER HAS SAID IT IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THEM..I'M MAD.
A few days ago, I found out that at TDC, guards are very hard on the inmates. I understand they have to deal with criminals. However, they are still humans who are hurt & broken...Some guards are disrespectful and hateful...🫤 and treat the inmates horribly. We can't look down on no one, regardless! God loves all people of all colors and backgrounds. We need to show love & respect towards each other whether in prison or not. Spread love and not hate! The world has enough hate! 🤨 I'm sorry for this lady's loss 😔 I pray that the policies at TDC will improve 🙏🏻 😢
Yeah. Right. Nobody accepts dying because of lack of proper training or lack of proper leadership. I’m sure this grieving mother really needed to hear that.
@jerickaevans don't take the job. I wouldn't. The numbers and the laws tell you that you're at great risk. All those inmates and a small amount of guards. It's never gonna be safe unless you keep them on lockdown, which I'm not opposed to
We as human beings have not yet understood that God already has an expiration date and time for us, it's sad what happened and that momma is going through the loss of her son. But his time here on earth was up whether it happened there or it would've happened somewhere else and in some other way but it was going to happen that day and that time. May his soul rest in peace and may God give strength to the mom and the family, God bless everyone
