I volunteer with an organization called Trash No Land and we do several cleanups around the Pacific Northwest throughout the year. Sometimes we will hit the same place twice in the year and find the place just as trashed as it was when we went to first clean it up. It depresses the hell out of me because I enjoy going out into the forest to target shoot. The couple of places that I go near to me I end up taking about 10x more garbage out than I've brought in. Even though I do this, I still end up lumped in with the assholes that don't want to be bothered to clean up after themselves. The interesting thing is that it only seems to happen on public lands, you can buy a pass which will let you access private lands and when you hike/bike/camp/shoot on them, they are clean. Everybody knows that if you leave the trash on the private lands, the people/company that owns them will restrict access. Trashing the private land costs money to clean up and if the sale of the passes doesn't generate more money then they will spend, it's not worth it for the company/individual to keep it open.
6 months on a clean up crew seems about right. And a speech to a grade school assembly of why it is bad to do what they did. Would you re-offend after that?
Easy. Start at a standing position, bend your legs at the knee and gently lower your body toward the ground. Lean your upper torso at the waist and extend either arm to the ground. Loosen your fingers and extend toward the shell casing. Once the casing is near the fingers, use the thumb and index finger and apply a minimum amount of pressure around the casing. Straighten your legs and torso to an upright position and then throw said casing in the trash. Repeat until you have completed your responsibility of keeping nature clean.
