Nice pick-up! My favorite Herbie LP. I have the 1966 Liberty pressing. And yes, the Liberty has the 1st pressing jacket.

@@dgmono yes, looks like the Fall sale will land on 7th Oct. Be sure to check out the Collector's Corner inside the building too because the staff usually will pull 1st press and/or DG mono LPs from the regular stacks to stock up this room. Folks start lining (tents) up the day prior.

What a killer album! I'm really happy you found this at such a great price. Watching you strike out on your record store road trip really bummed me out and I have to admit that my experience has largely been the same. My locals will post on instagram a quick flip through of their latest new arrivals, and I basically don't go into shop unless i see an intriguing jazz title pop up on one of those instagram videos. It's sad that basically all my jazz vinyl purchases happen online these days. If I found that record in the wild for $55 I'd probably pass out with excitement lol.

Thanks Ricky 😊 When I got home from my road trip I proceeded fill several holes in my collection that I was unable to on the road trip, though I was quickly reminded of how frustrating it can be to buy online--especially from Discogs where there are no photos. I also had bad luck with sealed reissues after my trip. I still prefer buying in person but man it is getting so hard to do that in stores. I'm hoping the WFMU Record Fair really delivers this year 🤞

yes, my version is first press stereo. with "P". and the jacket looks like yours. mine is a VG++ VG++ version. sure a KILLER album. i am a jazzpianist, so it is a have-to for musicians, as you know.

Five years ago, I'd be a little surprised and would have thought it was a pretty good deal. Today, I feel very lucky and I think it was an amazing deal. Rare for me to enjoy a quartet date with a trumpet as the only horn but it’s Freddie Hubbard at his prime. Agree with you 100% about returning records. Not a fan, especially for used albums. You can always ask to play it in the shop. Otherwise, get good at visual grading or be willing to take a chance.

was this recorded during the period when Rudy was doing mixes for mono and stereo? I need to brush up on what was going on in the early days of stereo

It was recorded during a period where we technically can't be sure if Alfred Lion and Rudy were focusing solely on the mono mix, or both, or the stereo (after ~1962). Rudy has claimed that Lion "never liked early stereo" so my guess is they were still focusing on the mono mix at this time. My personal feeling is he often cut better stereo than mono at this time though.
