Based on an article written by Eoghan Lyng in 2022 in Far Out Magazine in which Lyng says that “Tug Of War” is Paul McCartney’s best album in his solo-career, we gathered together Lyng and 2 other McCartney/Beatles experts to discuss whether it is indeed Paul’s best album. Also, the importance of George Martin and the various producers he’s used, whether or not Paul records his best work after facing a tragedy or adversity in his life, and what my guest speakers want most in a McCartney album. Thanks to all 3 guys for this stimulating conversation!

Ken, first of all, great audio level on all the three guests. So clear and very listenable. It's interesting how they have their favorites and the ones they don't dig! Beatley Tone gets into how enjoys Tug of War but somewhat dismisses Broad Street. I forget who said, Venus and Mars was his favorite album! I think it was Eoghan!! That's a cool pick! In my top 5 from the 1970's Paul McCartney's albums! 4 sure! Loved their input and view from perhaps a UK slant!

@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel my bad! Great choice! I bought that album brand new as a 10 year old in the summer of 1975. I was living in México. We just had moved from California and boy did I play that album all summer long! I'll check your channel! I hope you can join Ken in another videocast soon. Happy New Year 2024! Greetings from Hollywood, California!

Far be it from me to challenge @beatleytonesbeatleschannel Beatles knowledge, but, from what I understand, George Martin, did, indeed, curate the material for Tug of War. This is from the Beatle's Bible site: "In August McCartney, and possibly Denny Laine, made a series of recordings at McCartney’s home studio in Sussex. These were intended for an album to be produced by George Martin, and included the following songs: ‘Ballroom Dancing’, ‘Take It Away’, ‘Keep Under Cover’, ‘Average Person’, ‘Dress Me Up As A Robber’, ‘The Pound Is Sinking’, ‘Sweetest Little Show’, ‘Ebony And Ivory’, ‘Hear Me Lover’, ‘Wanderlust’, ‘The Unbelievable Experience’, ‘We All Stand Together’, ‘Boil Crisis’, ‘Give Us A Chord Roy’, ‘Seems Like Old Times’, and ‘Stop, You Don’t Know Where She Came From’. Although some of the material was strong, other songs were substandard and Martin told McCartney to write more, saying: “If it’s really going to work out, you’re going to have to accept some stick from me, and you may not like it, because you’ve been your own boss for so long.”

Excellent points taken here. There are some subpar material songs left off of Tug Of War, like Boil Crisis, and Give Us A Chord Roy. Yet I do think Seems Like Old Times could have made the cut, and Stop You Don't Know Where She Came From could have been developed more to be good enough for the album. If George Martin was involved in the decision making process of what were Paul's strongest cuts, I think he made good decisions, but I don't agree with all of them.

Good to see a show with fellow Uk/Irish views on Paul as we have a different take/history on anything Beatles to Americans. Take Ebony and Ivory and Get it off the album and replace them with I will Give me a ring and Rainclouds and in my view Tug of War would be the perfect Paul album

I’m really confused 😕 about what Eoghan didn’t like about Flaming Pie 🥧. Most of those songs are about how Paul was feeling at that moment about Linda dying. Because of that we got some of his best ballads such as Calico Skies 🌌 and Heaven on a Sunday and Souvenir. We got great day and young boy both of which were inspired by his family. Fabulous rockers such as the title track and if you wanna The World 🌍 tonight. The first track the songs we were singing is a beautiful song about his youth with John. I just don’t see how it sounds like things he’s done before.

I go back and forth between Ram and Memory Almost Full as the best Beatles solo album. If Tug of War had been released as a double album as originally intended, it would have been epic and possibly his best. I would have waited until 1983 to release it so that it could be released with the best songs from Pipes. I prefer this tracklisting: Side One Tug of War Take it Away The Other Me Keep Under Cover So Bad Side Two Wanderlust Ballroom Dancing The Pound is Sinking Rainclouds Here Today Side Three Pipes of Peace I'll Give You a Ring Somebody Who Cares Get It Ode to a Koala Bear Ebony and Ivory (solo version) Side Three Christian Bop Sweetest Little Show Average Guy Dress Me Up as a Robber Through Our Love The four tracks he did with Jackson and Wonder would more appropriately be released as duet singles.

Christopher-can you explain why you like Memory Almost Full so much? I've seen a growing appreciation for that album, and I like most of it, but among Paul's best? Why do you regard it so highly?

@@kenmichaelsradio748 Hi Ken. That would be a tough question to answer without an essay, but briefly, MAF has the fun, the songwriting quality and the production flair I look for in Paul's albums. Moreover, I love the strength he got back into his voice on screaming rockers like That Was Me, Nod Your Head, Only Mama Knows, etc. The absence of such songs is one of the reasons I think Chaos is overrated. Ever Present Past and See Your Sunshine sound like the best pop stuff from the early 80s, great bass line and backing vocals on the latter. The medley is excellent, like the entire album bringing together eclectic songs that still feel like they go well together. It pulls together everything I love about Paul's talent, fun ditties like Dance Tonight, quirky songs like Mister Bellamy, lovely acoustic numbers like You Tell Me, the aforementioned pop and rock songs and even a superb piano ballad that, for once, is not a love song - The End of the End. I don't think there is a bad moment on the album, the lyrics are even good to great. As much as I love Ram, there are a couple of small aspects that I think could have been done better. The only change I think I would make on MAF is start off with a more heavy-weight song than Dance Tonight. Otherwise, I love it. No corny duets, no lazy lyrics, no concessions to prevailing tastes, no bad tunes (Warm and Beautiful, sorry BT), no politics, just classic McCartney.

Thanks Ken. How cool this would have sounded on WDHA back in the day! RAM sounded incredible to this 8/9 yr old at the time ears...and still sounds the same. will never be surpassed probably due to that reason. ingrained in my membrane as one brilliant tune into the next. understanding more and more that he was producing that under such duress and attack by his 3 best friends... most of the press and... most of the world? astonishing Tug of War sounded very good to awesome to this 19/20 yr olds ears at the time. I cannot say I like it better than RRS, BOR, Venus, Speed, London, Back Egg, Wild Life (!) or even Macca 2 (sorry Tone LOL)...I like them all.

Greetings Beatle friends, I agree with Tone, with the exception of favorite solo album, as mine is BotR. Tug of War is top 6 or 7, my list is BotR, V&M, Ram, London Town, Wings Over America, Flowers in the Dirt, Tug of War. I have always thought that Paul was a better songwriter when he has someone who can be that "counterpoint" whether it be John, George Martin, Denny Laine, etc. But great convo, I appreciate everyone's viewpoint.

Dino makes a good point about the lack of recognition for Paul's album tracks - its where my favourite songs are and i agree with Eoghan regarding 'Flaming pie' i like the album but i bemoan the lack of 'suprises' with that album. When Paul puts a new album out i want to be suprised, i want something i haven't heard from him before.

There's no question that some of Paul's very best music have been his album cuts, even b-sides and bonus tracks. Regarding Eoghan's comments, this is why I asked the question what you look for in a McCartney album. Some fans would rather he record music that's closer to what he did in his earlier years, others wants change and want to see him experiment more. It's fun to hear the different opinions of fans.
