There were several reasons why that building collapsed. A certain basic support point was not done well or the interior decoration had removed important supports. The building was located above a fault zone and could withstand stronger forces! But the building did not disintegrate. Basically, the quality of the project is still at a certain level!

Since Taiwan is located in a high earthquake frequency area, the policy of our house building is "No damage with small earthquakes, Can be repaired with moderate earthquake, and No collapse with big earthquake." The building built before 1999 may not follow this principle because we amended the law after the tragedy of the 921 Jiji earthquake. And, of course, there are cases that just can't stand the big earthquake.

I'm a longtime resident of Taiwan, and yeah, earthquakes are just a reality of life here--especially in Hualien. So people here are well prepared for quakes. I live in Tainan on the opposite side of the island from Hualien, and I received an emergency alert on my phone about 10 seconds before the heavy shaking started. So I was mentally braced for it in advance. After the 1999 Nantou quake, the government upgraded building standards and emergency procedure policies, and we saw those efforts pay off with yesterday's quake. It's amazing that with such a powerful quake, the damage and casualty rate, while saddening, was as limited as it was.

GFM is just just a begging site, no different than standing on street corner w/a sign!! It's sad that he died as it's very sad for "any" death! But this is about begging, which is strictly for losers! She has one child & there's no reason in the world why she can't go to work, get a job like everyone else!!! Plenty of single moms work, handicap people work?! What do you think people did before GFM or the internet, they figured it out? People would be too proud to beg, they would get a 2nd job, sell something, etc... GFM is for losers, many people do this for funerals, when it cost about $2K for cremation, they beg for $30k & even more! It's complete nonsense & BS to Beg!!!

I don't want to have to research this but when you say he was with the aide trucks , were they sent out by the Red Cross or some other organization ? I remember many years ago this crackpot geologist claimed that global warming would lead to increase in the frequency and severity of earthquakes. Most of his peers laughed at him, even when he elaborated that the increase in sea level would change the forces on tectonic plates by trillions and trillions of tons, across the globe. At the time, I remember thinking, I choose to believe the consensus from the majority of geological experts... I'm starting to have my doubts. Maybe I was too quick to dismiss the idea.

It’s really not. This happens there. They have earthquakes, even big ones, every few years/decades. Earthquakes of this magnitude have been documented for hundreds of years. I lived in Taiwan for two years, on the East coast near where the recent earthquake happened. There were small earthquakes of magnitude 1-3 every couple of weeks when I was there. The biggest one during my time in Taiwan was 5.5, and that was the only one that really “rattled” me. Most of the earthquakes were barely noticeable. It’s actually remarkable that most of the buildings withstood the big earthquake yesterday. Notice that all the pictures of buildings that collapsed are the same handful of buildings, and those structures probably collapsed because the builders skirted around the building code regulations, which they will be held accountable for if that’s the case (Taiwan put builders in jail who skirted regulations and whose buildings collapsed in the 1999 earthquake). For the most part, Taiwan and other developed countries in the ring of fire like Japan now have strict building codes to ensure that buildings can withstand even large earthquake. Taiwan even has beacons in the ocean that can detect earthquakes 20 or so seconds before they happen so that people can take cover. Most of the deaths from the earthquake yesterday were from landslides and people stuck in tunnels rather than buildings collapsing. I’m not saying any of this to diminish the tragedy of the deaths and injuries that occurred, but just saying it’s part of life if you live in the ring of fire. The technology and regulations are constantly improving so that the earthquakes have less of an effect on daily life.
