@@allnamesaretakenful Similar but different. In DS9, the afflicted people were effectively made allergic to technology. But yes, The Dominion can easily drop a totally different disease on another race, mainly to keep some "Dr Julian Bashir" from just wandering in and undoing all their "punishments" on these peoples.
@@DocWolph yeah I always assumed the Founders cooked up a whole new evil virus each time they wanted to punish some planet. Not reusing their punishments ensures maximum labour required to save them all.
The changelings were shown to be exceptionally adept at genetic manipulation and in beta cannon it’s explored even more in parts of STO. Given how changelings are I imagine they have a genetic memory of sorts so it’s actually a very plausible theory that a young changeling sent out into the delta could have created the Phage as an experiment.
@@blazechicken6822 I thought their genetic memory was a confirmed part of their biology -- they just need to meld with The Link in order to access it easily.
@@MrRedFoxorMrelzorrorojo Yeah, the Kazon did feel like pretty cheap adversaries. 😂 Maybe they were trying to ease Voyager in with some low-level enemies instead of dropping them straight into a boss-fight. 🤷
I loved this faction... it was never explored enough in Voyager, a shame. The grey morality of survival against an ever adapting seemingly undefeatable sickness... oh... too timeless
One of the more interesting factions in VOY. Had they been on the Gamma Quadrant, Starfleet would've had the resources to make them a vaccine just like Bashir did with the quickening. Also further shows the importance of the EMH/LMH. They could've traded that technology as as a bargaining chip although the phage made the Vidians a desperate and very short-sighted race
Vidiians would be the species with the best medical technology in the Delta Quadrant. And they could probably try to rekindle the relationship with all the species they "harvested" for atonement.
i had the same thought. they could do a lot of good with the tech they inflicted on others if given the chance. sadly their neighbors are fairly hostile.
I like the idea of a huge Vidiian hospital ship on an ongoing mission to help everyone in need of medical attention to restore the reputation of their species.
@@Strash1892 *that has many interesting narrative possibilities...of course there could be factions within the Vidian society who would abuse their technology even further and become biogenic weapons merchants...and consider the nightmare of them obtaining Borg technology*
@@scottmantooth8785 It would also be interesting to see the moral divisions within their society between those who rejected the harvesting of the living vs those who didn't give a fuck.
The Vidiians were definitely one of the more intimidating species. You feel bad for their entire plight but then you're drawn to watch in horror as you witness medical atorities in the name of survival. It would be interesting to see a "good" or I guess "normal" version of the Vidiians and how their advanced medical and wrap technology serve them now.
On 1 hand 🤚🏻, I completely understand the Vidian’s desperation to survive and their willingness to have to do anything to achieve survival for 2,000 years. On the other hand ✋🏻, I understand other species’ desire to eliminate continual predation by the Vidians and thus their desire to wipe the Vidians out. ⚖️
And the Doctor gave Neelix some holographic lungs until they could recover them. They probably gave some sort of explanation which I can't remember now, but if they could make holographic lungs, why couldn't they replicate real ones? 🤔
Could you do a video on how the Federation probably felt and reacted to Sisko joining the Prophets? Would love to see! As always love your content, keep at it!
I think they are a really tragic story. I'm glad Voyager didn't leave them as organ harvesting monsters and fleshed out their story and people. Despite that I would have liked to see more of them because they were really one of the more interesting races in Voyager.
It could be that though the phage had been cured by the think tank, said cure may not be widely available. In Prodigy the ferengei who raised Dal tried tricking the ship into thinking they were a phage-infected vidiian before being easily found out. At the current time Prodigy is said to be five years after Voyager, but time travel stuff is currently in question so it could be later.
The scene where Tom Paris says that the Vidian genetic duplication is impossible is funnier when you remember that he turns into a salamander after doing the impossible in Threshold.
Their phage kind of reminds me of flesh eating bacteria here on Earth. And it's not too unlike what HPV does to people with no immune system. Well also Leprosy...
surprised they didn't also invest a lot on artificial or clone organ, the federation already had that with Sisko's father mentioned in his first appearance. If they were so far beyond the UFP unless it was just barely compensating
I think the problem with any type of cloning would be having stem cells not affected by The Phage. The disease actually disrupted their genetic code first.
Nothing is better than the federation. Really the borg would have trashed the federation. The dinosaurs were billions of years ahead of the federation as well but federation could still out tech them?
*you would think with transporter bio filtering technology the Phage could have been totally eliminated at the molecular level or resequenced into something far less malignant*
@@scottmantooth8785 doesn't work with every disease. in fact it is pointed out on a number of episodes on TNG, DS9 that the biofilters don't work all the time especially with something unknown.
Good evening Ric, Thanks for the interesting look into an alien race I find to be a true adversary in technology and ship power. YES I would like them to make an appearance in Discovery IN A HEALTHY and productive way. Thanks for sharing your research on this species.
I'd like to think that there's just this one guy on the Discovery or Prodigy writing teams who keeps pushing for the scab aliens to be revisited, and everyone else is just like, "Get the hell away from me." Meanwhile, on the Lower Decks writing team, they're all going, "We can't just use them on any joke; we need to make it _special._
I wonder what would happen if the Borg ever encountered the Vidiians. Would the Borg risk assimilating Vidiians, or would any Vidiians be willing to undergo assimilation in order to cure the Phage/survive?
I would say the Borg would either avoid or exterminate on contact the Vidiians. But if Borg Assimilation did cure the Phage, would at least some Vidiians surrender for that cure or survive, or would at least some Vidiians try to capture some Borg to find out how they cured the Phage.
@@walterlyzohub8112 "This is Assimion, the new one dose treatment for the Phage! LOL! Can't relate! Hummm! 'Was just thinking as you introduced this video, dated, Jan 28, 2022, hummm, 'what has 'Covid done to earth as of late! Great timing!
Its interesting , what would the Borg or Vidians encounter look like . biological they have little to offer to the borg , but the vidians could remove vital parts of the borg with their scanners /transporter insturments . It also shows a distinctive desire of the delta quadrant of collecting DNA from other species . The care taker , the Vidians, the Borg .
I'm actually surprised the other quadrants in Star Trek don't focus more on DNA. As shown in the Delta quadrant (and, unfortunately, misinformation IRL today) knowledge is power, and DNA is one of the most dense, widespread, and (in Star Trek) malleable repositories of data. It would be an interesting and relevant story to have a Star Trek episode based on DNA misinformation.
@@marcusfranconium3392 Yeah, i remember that one. It was interesting, but Star Trek never took it anywhere beyond all the races having a common ancestor/progenitor. It felt more like an episode to explain why all the aliens looked like people in makeup :D
@@pills- It could have been part of a bigger storry just like with the traveler and the symbiont parasite that merged with humans. tons of story lines that where never concluded .
I imagine that being organ harvesters could actually increase trade. It's a great way for cultures to get rid of inconvenient people while making a profit too.
In an episode of Stargate Atlantis, the mayor/governor had a deal with the Wraith who would come to cull their planet. Instead of random cullings, the criminals and undesirables would be sent as tribute. This was unsustainable of course since it served as a deterrent from committing serious enough crimes. And so the the severity of the crime needed for a death sentence was drastically lowered.
I would like to see two different factions of Vidiians, appear in the spinoff shows of (STAR TREK: DISCOVERY) show. I also would like to see the two different factions, of the Vidiians appear in the spinoff shows, of (STAR TREK: PICARD) show.
@@pills- I just think that meme phrase is funny is all, not trying to troll around none it's just more fun than saying socialist like Starfleet is all. @@mikewilliams9069 Maybe having the possibility of your species going extinct by an unrelenting disease especially in today’s dang age is especially terrifying, just because you want equal rights for both women and men doesn’t mean you can be rude to people on the Internet.
I haven't seen this latest season of Discovery, but I'd love for that show to do a follow up on these people. LOL a Star Trek series devoted to following up on old eps of previous Star Trek series might not be a bad idea in general EDIT: OK I mean we have Lower Decks but I meant played mostly straight (though definitely hoping that show lasts a few more seasons)
Just a wild theory but if I remember correctly, the Borg came to be not long after the Phage plagued the Vidiians. It wouldn't be so farfetched that the Vidiians experimented with cybernetics as an alternative to harvesting from others and given their medical tech, it'd be plausible that the original Borg may have been Vidiian, eventually dying/degrading and leaving the other drones in control. That could also explain the Borg's broken early history
Other than the story purpose of sowing fear, did they ever address why they didn't grow organs separate from hosts and/or try to isolate and stave off the transmission vector(s) for the phage?
This is what happens when writers are in a hurry. We end up with incomplete information. The Vidiians as a people have a LOT of story potential. And I want to find out if they actually get cured and what was the price the Think Tank charged.
Memory Alpha notes that it first disrupted their genetic code. After 2000 years, I would presume that procreation was the primary means of transmission through damaged DNA. Danara Pel developed it at age 7, but it's possible the onset varies. If they didn't have unaffected stem cells to create the organ, I would assume there would be no guarantee on the longevity of the new organ. If other species are more resistant to the Phage, they would get more mileage out of organ harvesting. Maybe some factions of the population don't believe in organ harvesting and do attempt to clone. And they obviously rely on implanted tech as well to prolong functions. Denara appeared to be much more compassionate to others and I choose to believe that is the real spirit of the Vidiian people.
They make total sense when you watch the movie where they visit the planet they are from. When picard visits the planet they are all healthy but when they leave they get sick. Something in or on the planet keeps then healthy.
Where is there a Community tab? I'd like to vote for the Suliban. Is it because I'm using Firefox on a Linux system? ...I swear I've checked every tab and dropdown menu I could see? :-[ Ah! Nevermind. It's on his main page. I thought differently.
It’s been said that the Star Trek franchise could predict some aspects of our future. Let’s hope this version doesn’t happen to us. I suspect the Phage by the name is like the bacterialphage in our world. Must be similar to the Macrovirus that Voyager encountered. Living hypodermic needles injecting their genetic codes and smaller than a bacteria.
Did the Borg ever assimilate the Vidiians? I don't remember it ever mentioned by 7 of 9 or no reference in the non-canon ST Voyager novels? Anyone know?
I can't recall it. And I doubt it. The Borg may have taken an interest in the Vidiian transplant tech, but i doubt they would have considered a species crippled by a genetic disease as worthy of assimilation. They would probably be more likely to study the Phage instead of the Vidiians.
Seriously the writer who made them up should complete their story. I always thought that the Think Tank were not fully honest anyway so I agree that their cure claim as dubious.
Red lanterns started by atrocitus to get revenge on the guardians for creating the. Manhunters the beta version of The Green lanterns the manhunters were unfeeling uncaring thinking computers and went rogue. So there would be no conflict in the universe would be at peace one of these worlds that failed was atrocities his home world. Angered and enraged he tried to get revenge on the guardians which. Got him in prison once he broke out of prison the Green lanterns were established and he went on a massive killing. The Red lantern rings functions as well as the Green lantern rings except the Red. Lantern process is much different from Green lanterns if you have a lot of rage that rage. Completely infects your blood turning it into sort of a fiery cosmic liquid. And being purged of a Red lantern ring is very dangerous and can result in death. The more rage a person can feel can recharge a ring without using a central battery but at the end of the day you'll need a central battery to recharge the ring.
It would be better to do an index on the Lensmen, as this is what the Green Lantern Corps was created to be a pastiche of, with the different colours of lenses eventually being adapted into the different colour power rings.
It always annoyed me that the Phage was (supposedly) cured off-screen. I know it's pretty "hero worship-y", but with all that we saw, it would be far more expected that Voyager's Doctor would be one to come up with a cure. *Voyager introduced Klingon DNA to the Viidians... a DNA from a whole other quadrant, that no-one in this region of the galaxy would be even similar to, thus why it was never discovered beforehand. *The ship's computer was able to extrapolate what the Viidian woman would have looked like if she never had the Phage, showing that the Doctor and the ship's computer had the know-how to isolate the Phage's genetic make-up from the Viidian DNA. *The Doctor and Voyager's medical database, despite supposedly being FAR lower on a technological scale, was able to genetically recombine B'lanna's human and klingon DNA back to a single person, despite it being a procedure that would be unimaginable up to that point. The Think Tank had likely been around for a long time before Voyager made an appearance in the Delta Quadrant... yet it had NEVER come up with a solution to the Phage (and/or never been approached to purchase their time to create a solution)? Seems like a missed opportunity to show Voyager doing some major good for another species and have word of such a colossal victory spread forth... rather than be seen as unknowns, or even as villains, in some parts of the quadrant. Assuming they weren't wiped out, if other species did take revenge on them, I like to think that once the Phage was cured, the Viidians would have prostrated themselves for mercy from other species, offering to freely share their highly advanced medical technology with other species, and eventually end up working as nomadic doctors, like a space-faring version of The Red Cross and other such humanitarian organisations.
The Think Tank only offers their services when their is something they want and they have to know about that thing. The Think Tank is hated by several parties.
@@toomanyaccounts Indeed, and all the more reason they shouldn't have been given the victory on such a case. It could have been something spoken about in the episodes where the Viidians were involved, and maybe commented on off-handedly in other episodes, only for one final episode involving the Viidians where the Doctor finally finishes making a permanent cure for the Phage, giving a happier ending to the overarching storyline.

Honestly the ONLY villains to make ne nervous for any if the trek characters, I can't even imagine what sisco would have done if he had to deal with them on mass
I feel like they missed a trick with the Vidians. They should have had Voyager making their way to the Gamma Quadrent end of th DS9 wormhole at first, because that made logical sense, then have the Vidians who would in this version of events be refugees from the Gamma quadrent, as back in the day they were a power very much like the Federation, but they were crushed and scattered to the winds by the Dominion, depending on when they were introduced, you could even have this be a tie in to DS9, where the Dominion is playing the role of their role as Lore Reloaded shows on DS9, and then you see the Vidians who should be regular badies on Voyager for a a couple months, and the Voyager crew now know going into the Gamma Quadrent is a horents nest they cannot afford to stir.
For all their medical expertise, you would think the Vidiians would have figured out how to grow new organs from stem cells or raise animals as organ hosts.
Maybe we’ll get “lucky” and have them appear as the “teaching moment of the week” in a future episode of prodigy… wouldn’t mind the main character to be vivisected.
Huh? 🤨 The only Star Trek episode called "The Game" is a _Next Generation_ episode, so obviously that's not it because the Vidiians are in the Delta Quadrant, so they're only in _Voyager_. There were a couple of Voyager episodes called The Killing Game, but those were about the Hirogen, not the Vidiians.
I would like to see another jump into the delta quadrant. If the transwarp tech the brought back was played with something just after the Picard timeframe wouldn't be out of the question.
I more sensible thing for them to do is just get the organs from whatever the delta quadrants pigs are. Pigs grow fast, have loads of babies are are about the right size, all the organs you need and none of the genocide. If early 21st century humans can get it work in pinch they should be able to iron out all the kinks.
they explained. the phage adapts. hence using the same organs from an individual means the phage works faster at deteriorating the organ and causing death.
@@user-zh4vo1kw1z they do scan. they try to get organs from cavaders but there isn't enough dead to meet the demand. we don't know the population of the viidians but it could be in the hundreds of millions to billions.
@@toomanyaccountsso like the resurrection men: they create their own cadavers? If they scan and clone everyone they would otherwise end up killing, it might prevent some "shoot on sight" policies. Or if there is some technobabble for why scanning wouldn't work: how about instead of ripping the entire organ out, just a few sample cells?
@@user-zh4vo1kw1z once again the phage renders use of duplicate organs useless. it adapts to any treatment. use of new organs from different individuals/species only delays the disease.
And if they can duplicate, why not just capture someone, duplicate their entire body, then repeat that process while sending the duplicated person back. It would be more ethical, less likely to garner enmity and get them more bang for their buck.
I mean....considering the horrific deaths they gave probably millions if not billions in those 2000 years of organ harvesting, I probably would show up in orbit with a ship full of atomic as soon as I heard they where distracted if I where one of their victim races.
