Friend, is it really recessary to remove the bottom of the inner can? Could you just put the holes in the side at the bottom as you have done but not remove the bottom? I am working on using a can of peas for the inner can and a can of tuna for the outer. Here we have rather flat but wide tuna cans that hold the "pea can" just fine. Will give it a try today. Regards
