MS 3227a, aka the Codex Döbringer, is one of the earliest manuscripts of Historical European Martial Arts. This video is our take on its brief description of Liechtenauer's Four Guards, and how that can still make sense if there are many more than four guards named. One of my favorite things about MS 3227a is that it seems to put much more importance on Liechtenauer's principles than on the details of exactly how to do something. So it does lend itself to a certain amount of individuality within the art. (This vagueness can also sometimes lead to heated internet arguments, I mean, discussions.) As always, these are our interpretations and will sometimes differ from the interpretations of others.

Nick: I can't seem to reply to your comment, but a quick note on the low offline guard (pflug and/or alber): 1) In the Vier Leger section, 3227a is quite clear that the low offline guard is called pflug, and the low online guard is called alber. This is the reverse of the 'normal' terminology seen in 44.a.8 ('von Danzig') and Ringeck. 2) However, in the section on the Zwerhau, 3227a has the same play of zwer to the ochs and pflug, nearly identical to the corresponding plays in Ringeck and pseudo-Danzig. 3) It's unclear if this is a scribal error in the vier Leger section (my current preferred idea) or if it's a difference in how 3227a conceptualises the guards. Mike Ruhala has some interesting ideas about the latter. 4) The other question is whether this is the 'original' definitions of the vier Leger, and the Ringeck/psDanzig tradition is an offshoot, or vice versa. To this end it's worth remembering that the conventional 1389 date for 3227a is very questionable - it's based on the inclusion of a calendar, but that calendar could be copied up late or early based on availability. So we aren't guaranteed that the MS is the first written work in the Liechtenauer tradition - it could also be a later offshoot.

Thanks again. We like to do the guards with strait wrist: left Pflug with thumb, right Pflug normal grip. Feels more comfortable and agile. For the vom Tag on the left shoulder this means the long edge is pointing outward to the left. Give it a try and let me know your opinion.

when I do ochs, I put my guard horizontal, and if someone attacks, then I just pull back a little and let them hit my sword then use that force to rotate my blade, and then hit them. I turn them vertical when I just want to statically block the opponent. Thanks for the video series, Chris

Interesting talk. I was taught that the guard with the sword tip pointed down to the floor was called fools. Is that what Talhoffer called it? I love your videos. Keep up the great work.

I think I've seen some medieval ploughs that had only one handle that was more or less at a parallel angle with the ground. If you imagine how you'd have to hold such a tool, it maybe approximates the guard Pflug. Just a guess :)

Where did you find the evidence that long point is the same category as vom Tag? Because at least in p.v.D., the counter against long point is the same as against pflug (a Schielhau)

"The fourth guard, from Tag (high guard) is also the long point. Who practices it with extended arms cannot be hit with strikes or thrusts. It may also hit the hanging over the head." (from Wiktenauer) I think the correct deduction from this is that 3227a prefers a high VT, held with arms extended above the head. It's pleasingly similar to Luginslant, the messer guard.

Why do you put the long edge up in left Pflug?

The "von Danzig" manuscript explicitly tells you to. Cod.44.A.8 (26r) "Mark, on the left side position yourself thus in the Plow: stand with the right foot before and hold your sword near your left side with the pommel below you on the hip, so that the long edge is above and the point stands in against the face. That is the Plow on both sides."
