When I was in Vietnam in 1967 & 68 I qualified with the M-16, carried the M-14, the M-60 and one you did not have there ,the M-79 grenade launcher. I never cared for full auto, because once you burn up all the ammo, all you have is a club. LOL you have to carry all that ammo with you, at least with the M-60 you usually had a crew to carry your ammo. Funny , way back then I could disassemble them and put them back together, blindfolded. Now I don't know, it has been a long time.

Trust me you can still disassemble and reassemble them. Vietnam 68 69 I can still remember the M14 M16 M60 and I taken apart a 105mm Howitzer in the field to replace the recoil mechanism. You never forget. Welcome Home.

My dad was issued the M-14 during Vietnam. He said in full auto it was more easy to control with the butt of the rifle against his hip. When I was a kid I remember him once saying it made a nice baseball bat between reloading. 3 purple hearts, toughest SOB I know. Love ya dad

Many of the special Forces Advisors attached to the South Vietnamese forces during the early 1960s carried M2 carbines until the M16 was introduced.

M16 was initially hated because A: the powers that be said it didn’t need to be cleaned and no kits were issued. B: the ammo was originally loaded with ball powder which quickly fouled. Once they switched to cleaning kits, and stick powder, the problems were rare.

Plus chromed bores. The military still does that on every firearm, even the m9. My 92f does too. I also much prefer bar-dot sights. So much more instinctual.

Imagine being trained on one rifle then being issued something totally different you have never seen before and have no idea how it works. That is how most people were introduced to the M16 at first. Compound that with the problems you addressed, and add in that the first generation of M16 magazines were designed to be disposable items. That was another huge issue, the disposable cheap magazines would be reused more than intended began failing as well, hence why people tended to load them to 18 rounds rather than 20 to extend their uses, and to ensure they were more reliable. That is much less of an issue now, as it is easy to get very high quality magazines for relatively cheap prices.

@@takingbacktoxic7898 - So true, an automatic is only as good as it's magazine. It can and will become a single shot so fast. Revolvers I've even had fail on me, pretty badly. A .22 s&w ultralight, it's yoke screw came loose and the the whole cylinder fell out. Now what if that was a life or death situation? Thank goodness it wasn't. But it should tell you any fire arm can fail. I'm not so sure if the magazine is the most important part or the ammo. Bad ammo can make the most dead reliable gun into a jam-o-matic.

Colt was too cheap to pay for the Hard Chrome plating for the BCG and bore that was in Stoner’s original design.

I started out with the M14 and then we were assigned the M16 . When my tour of duty was over and i was turning in my M16 it was a wreck and didn't look like the same weapon when i was assigned to. At our shop they had a drum cut in half and was filled with diesel fuel. So I stripped it down and washed all the parts with the diesel fuel , dried it off and went and turned it in immediately. They complimented me how i took good care of the weapon , they should have seen it a half hour before that. We had a M88 recovery tank in our platoon which had a few weapons on it . The driver had a 45 caliber pistol which he carried all the time even on base camp, he was a jerk. Also there was a 50 caliber machine gun mounted on top at all the times with a M60 machine gun, M79 grenade launcher , Grease gun, and two dozen hand grenades inside. When ever we took the M88 tank out i rode on top with the M60 on my lap with the ammunition belt locked in place. Most of the time i was running convoys with a M543 wrecker or out in the field pulling and replacing tank power packs.

Was it true that the early M16 rifles often jammed during conflict, I heard the Chinese Kalashnikov was preferred as it was of simple design so didn't jam as often when dirty.

I see you asked why the M88 operator was a jerk . He was the operator of the (M88) and thought he was better than anyone else. Our recovery and evacuation section had four operators and a Spec 5 in charge of us out of whole company of 125 men. Thomas the m88 operator got into a argument with Estee in our hutch and he pulled the 45 pistol out and pointed it straight at his head and threatened to shoot him. I thought if he ever left it anywhere when he wasn't around, I was going to throw it into a nearby ditch. I never really liked Thomas because of his attitude, but after that incident I never trusted him. He carried that pistol wherever he went, mess hall ,showers and everywhere on base when it was not needed. I have more stories of my tour of in Vietnam if you are interested. There's a veteran that puts out videos and said their M543 wrecker never moved not my wrecker, It went out every day of my tour of duty. Later

My best friend's father served in Vietnam. He still talks about how much he loved the M-16. He said it aimed well and was easy to maintain.

That's the total opposite of my grandfather's opinion, he was in the air force in Vietnam and said he has his m16 for 2 weeks before he turned it in and demanded an m1 carbine instead

@@annoyanceking Roger that ! And I believe they were loaded up with 130gr FMJ ball ammo most of the time. I've got alot of very old gun books (magazines). I remember a story in one of them,(the article I. It was written while the war was going on), S&W gave a then very new model, an all stainless model 60 38 snub, to an Infantry soilder to test in the jungle, in combat. The soilder just carried the revolver in his pocket. It was then inspected after a hard year of use. It only had one small area of rust on it and still worked just fine. And I've also read that a S&W model 29-44 magnum was used by an American mercenary to make a kill in Vietnam. Probably the 1st documented anti personel kill with the then very new 29. And the revolver used in the infamous VC street execution by a South Vietnam police chief, was a S&W 38 Bodyguard snub model. There are many documented uses of various S&W revolvers used during that war. The S&W revolvers were very popular indeed. And the Seals used a S&W 9mm model 39 auto. Sometimes with a silencer attached. They called it the Hush puppy.

My uncle claims in his VA journal that throughout his first tour in 1965 he carried the BAR primarily, but that was early in the war. He carried an m14 after that most of the time, I believe.

@@NAMVETSTARLITE I understand that agent orange has caused around 300,000 American deaths after being exposed in that war effort. The number is only going up. My father in law a Vietnam combat vet just like many others suffers from something like Parkinson’s disease today. He talked about the time they were in a field on break playing soccer and all the soldiers legs were just covered in that agent orange shit. I understand is was simply not understood at the time the long term toxic effects. My step father, a Vietnam combat vet was a Ranger and while jumping out of planes and helicopters has taken its toll on his spine, he was fortunate enough to not be exposed to ORANGE. Both of them practically never talk about anything they really went through being in the military or what they’ve experienced. I’ve asked casual questions but its clearly something common that many combat vets share where they have learned to not go there ever again and try to block out that part of their lives. Heavy stuff!

I carried both the M-60 and 1911 up until 1992 when I got out of the Army. The M-60 was a monster that could destroy just about anything down range but it weighed 23 lbs which made you a monster also from packing it around. Not to even mention the 100 rd. Bandoliers of ammo, spare barrel, tripod and T&E equipment that came along with it.

I was a Vietnam era sailor. In basic training we 'trained' with M1 Garand's and 1911's. Aboard ship, I was a member of 'a landing crew' make sure that the beach was safe for a marine landing, as we carried a compliment of about 1200 Marines and all their equipment. So I trained at Camp Pendelton with M16, 1911, the BAR, and hand grenades.

I can't imagine having to fight in Vietnam. Traps everywhere, NVA disguised as citizens ready to ambush you and kill all your friends, deep tunnel systems that had to be cleared out personally by tunnel rats, those guys went thru hell and came back to get treated like garbage for it. They deserve so much more respect

Hate to tell you this, buuuuuuuut everything you mentioned has been part of war since as far back as wars go. During the Battle of the Bulge, the SS used English speaking soldiers in captured American Uniforms and vehicles to raise hell amongst the Allies, all the way to Al-Queda/ISIS IEDs, suicide bombers, and digging complex tunnel systems under every city they occupied (Iraq, Afghanistan,Libya, etc). The Iraqis had the best cure for ISIS Tunnels, they cleared the block of civilians, backed gasoline trucks up to each end of the tunnel, dumped in about 5000 gallons of Hi-Test, then lit it off with satchel charges. No need for tunnel rats. Be clear; the US did not do that....it was the Iraqis. :-)

M1 carbines have been popular anywhere they were available. My grandfather swore by his, and was the only firearm he owned saying it was plenty effective for him when he carried it in the war (WWII) so it was more then enough for his farm.

I was in the 1968 Tet Offensive and what got me home safely was the M14 and the M60. Not to mention the new Cobra gunship with their mini gun. But remember, we never called them "guns or Hevan forbid rifles", they were weapons. Good job John, please continue the good work.

I still carry a 1911 as an EDC, I own an M1A, and a AR-15(A4). I carried the M-60 in the military (before we transitioned to the M240B/G). What a great selection of classics!

Such a controversial subject and my opinion is probably going to confuse a lot of people. I grew up in a western country that had laws completely polar opposite of US gun laws and never once worried if I was going to die from a firearm when I stepped outside my house or going to school or work (some Americans deal with that daily) and grew up watching the news what happens in a country that more or less allows people to have the freedom to do that with the 2nd. So tbh it's by far the most idiotic stupidest law in any western country but at the same time I support Americans rights to own because 99% of gun owners don't want to shoot people.

If so, I need to remind you that it is an amendment to our Constitution, NOT a law, and there is a DEFINITE distinction between the two. If not, please clarify which law you are referring to, and end the confusion. If you are referring to the 2nd Amendment as being "by far the most idiotic stupidest law in any western country", then you my friend, are the one who is confused! History is rife with MANY countries, western or otherwise, that would have been much better off, if not COMPLETELY different today, had they had such a governing rule to their benefit! @Levi the most idiotic stupidest" thing that has ever happened in America's history is that some of our citizens supported and voted for candidates who want the US to be governed by a totolatarian dictator. Call it facism communism or whatever you want. The goal of any totolatarian government is to take away citizens rights. Maybe in your country of origin people don't mind being deprived of the freedom that is dear to the hearts of patriótic Americans. Your "wearing out in 1000 rounds" comment on the M60 surprised me. In 1969, I remember us (an Air Force Security Policeman and me, an augmentee) going through almost 2000 one night without a hitch in the mechanism. We were looking to go to third barrel though (we only had one extra, LOL). I am impressed with you shooting the M14 on full auto. I had to roll it into my hip joint, put one hand on the top, and literally fall on the rifle on full auto (only weighed about 128 then,) and it still slid me back about 3 feet the ONE time I shot it over there. As for the M16, our "cleaning kit" was wire brushes and rags using diesel fuel with oil added for our solvent/lube, but the weapons served us well. My experience was related to air base security (not the jungle warfare my Army and Marine brothers endured), so don't take my word for more than what it is. I did carry an M79 when assigned a mobile team, but my preferred method was to lay prone and dig the butt into the dirt. (My primary job on mobile patrol Quebec teams was ammo carrier/feeder for the SP with the M60). Good job, John. You make your daddy proud.

During WW11, my dad used a Thompson 45. He also used the Garand @ other guns issued to him. He advised that the Garand & Thompson were his favorite weapons for combat. When he ran out of ammo, he just picked up another off the ground.

That's what I normally think of a standard US squad fighting in World War II, Normally ex the European theatre a typical platoon fighting in say France or Germany would be carrying .30 cal M1 Garand rifles and Thompson SMGs of various models mainly M1A1s and support gunners would carry the .30-06 BAR or Browning Automatic Rifle for suppressing enemies like the Germans did with the MG-42.

The M60 kicks ass, even with blanks. In the 90's, while attending PLDC at Ft. Carson, Colorado, I found myself on point while patrolling with the M60 while we were conducting MILES training. We were walking through a wadi when all of a sudden gunfire broke out behind me as my squad began taking fire from an ambushing unit above. I scrambled up the side of the embankment to my left, dropped to the ground, planted my M60 and proceeded to decimate our attackers. Everyone was "dead" within about 4 seconds. MILES gear was like "laser tag" with real guns, blank adaptors and blank rounds. I was the only one that "lived" through that experience, but even with blanks, an M60 brings a smile to your face and will always have a special place in my heart. And I didn't even have an A-gunner! When we were going through jungle training at Fort Benning, one training mission was a convoy thet got attacked, but we were in the third truck and we kind of got lost for a few minutes, we cought up right after the attack, suprised the attackers and took back the convoy.

While not issued by the military, many non-officiers wrote home and had a .357 mag (usually S&W) mailed to them. This was in the days an individual could mail guns.

Thank you. I never fired the M60 but did fire the 50 cal and M79 and LAW. I'm glad they have repaired the problems with the AR 15 variants. They have a lot of firepower. The M14 was a beast and also gave you something to swing around like a club and made an excellent bayonet platform.

I was Navy during Viet Nam. My first tour we carried M-1 Garand's, we even still had 03 Springfield's on board. We finally got M-14's when the Marines got the cast off Army M-16's. My last tour we had early M-16's. But my favorite always was the M-1 Garand.

I was on the USS Juneau in 2001 and they still had M-14s and M-60s that looked BRAND NEW in the ship’s armory. We Marines were green with envy. We wanted them!!!!

The M1 was still in use with National Guard units during your time there, The same with the Carbine as many reservists carried them during the riots back home

Thanks for including the M1/M2 Carbine, as they were issued in the early part of Vietnam before the M16 came out. A friend of mine used one. He was of small stature, and would have not liked carrying around the heavy M14. He mentioned the jamming with 30 round magazines then. Fine in full auto, and troublesome in semi-auto.

Fun fact; I went to Warwick Veterans Memorial Highschool in Rhode Island. This school was built and dedicated as a Memorial to all fallen service men and women who died in the Korean War. And would you believe it that in my four years and my older brother's four years, we never learned anything about the Korean War. I guess "the forgotten war" really is a fitting title. If you could make a Korean War video that would be amazing. All the people of Warwick Rhode Island would appreciate it.

I fired boucoup rounds under combat conditions. The M-14 was accurate and lethal over 2-3 hundred yards. I was friends with one for 18 months. Now I’am too old to even hold one up. Thanks for the full auto demo, I never found that problematic.

During my time, serving in the Marine Corps, from 1977-1983, I shot the M-16 A-1, AR-15 A-1, M60, M1911, Rem. 870 pump shotgun. I didn't use any firearm extensively because my MOS was 7011(Expeditionary Airfield Technician). I built portable airfields, arresting gear and stopped tailhook aircraft using the M-21 and E-28 Arresting gear. As a current member of my local military funeral detail, I regularly shoot the M-1 Garand rifle.

M10 Smith & Wesson .38? As a Small Arms Repairman(1980-1986) I inspected air cav units where the pilots carried the M10. It was also one of the pistols I was trained to fix at Aberdeen Proving Grounds Army Ordnance School. We were trained on two shotguns...Reminton 870 and Winchester Model 12...Great video and glad to see you keeping the family tradition!

Just after my 2year enlistment in the Marines I bought a Colt AR15 in 78. It was exactly like the M16 A1 I trained with except no forward assist or fence around the mag release but like the A1 had the trapdoor butstock and birdcage flashhider. Ran flawlessly.

My grandfather was a Vietnam Veteran. He told me he shot a M16, and a black 1911 45acp, and he got to a rocket launcher once.. Unfortunately after the war he had PTSD, He wasnt much for shooting guns. Cool video!

My father was a Marine in ‘Nam ‘67-‘68. His favourite rifle was the M14, said he hated the M16 because of how often you had to clean it and still couldn’t trust it not to jam. He got an M3 grease gun to use as a backup for whenever his M16 inevitably jammed

Hi John , thanks for the great video. You can avoid bolt damage to the M60 by not allowing the gun to run out of ammo. You can also place a snap cap or dummy round at the end of your belted ammo. Good Luck & Keep shooting, Paul.

Thank you for taking me down memory lane. I also remember firing the laws rocket launcher, M203, and M2, or Ma duce. Our unit had 106 recoiless, and some large mortars', don't remember what size, maybe in the 5 inch range. Some fancy stuff too like wire guided shoulder fired stuff. Talking 1979 to 1980's.

Love the M60, we used them in army aviation until 2006. The M60D then we fielded the 240H. A great weapon as well, but the 60D will always hold a special place in my heart. Used it in three different deployments.

I think A lot of them don’t like it if you just go up and thank them, like I understand but I could imagine it get annoying, I’m not in the service but I got old school military gear that I wear and people ask me sometimes if I’m in the military and I’m like “no this is old bdu’s” people don’t know there camo’s, and that’s another thing there’s posers out there, the people that I know that served don’t even let you know they did, I treat everyone equal, I got videos of outdoor stuff and historical military stuff
