Lucky for him that US mainland was safe from the war. Unlike Vietnamese people at that time, they hadnt had any safe haven to come back from injured, to get married, to have kids, to have ONLY six buddies died from the war until the war ended. We normally have HUNDREDS of friends and relatives died here and there. So, thanks USA from comming uninvitedly. Yeah, the US veterans are the Biggest victims of the war.

Like others in his time, he believed that one could not be a true nationalist and desire full independence and self-sufficiency from colonial powers if one did not break with an exploitative global market, aka capitalism. With that being said. he was an opportunist who was willing to make alliances with the likes of the United States if it would end colonial rule in Vietnam, but most politicians are.

@@hawx00145 That was practically no one. For most of the "volunteers" it was either "volunteer" for some military position that was less likely to get them killed or be drafted as cannon fodder. And of course there was no communist threat. The threat was to the Vietnamese people, who just wanted the colonizers out. Much like Ruzzia is doing to Ukraine today, the French and Americans were the invaders who had no business being there at all, and committed countless atrocities against the people.

It’s not like the Vietnamese were fighting for freedom. US was trying to prevent communism which was a very threatening thing back then. This was during the Cold War after all

Among Ho Chi Minh's collected works, published in 1960, was the essay "The Path Which Led Me To Leninism". In this essay, Ho Chi Minh states: "At first, patriotism, not yet communism, led me to have confidence in Lenin, in the Third International. Step by step, along the struggle, by studying Marxism-Leninism parallel with participation in practical activities, I gradually came upon the fact that only socialism and communism can liberate the oppressed nations and the working people throughout the world from slavery." The point being that Ho Chi Minh did not see any contradiction between patriotism and communism, and in fact believed that you could not have serious patriotism without a communist society which would rid the nations of the vestiges of imperialism. If you don't believe me you can google it, but that quote is a misquote that people throw around a lot without finding the full original statement. Occasionally, he extolled one over the other, but only tactically, to match his message to the listener, as was necessary to maintain a political balancing act. As @JohnBrownsBody explained here, Ho’s patriotism was inextricable from his communist conviction, and vice-versa.

It's more than that, after the Japanese defeat in WW2, Britain sent forces into what was at the time Indochina and if they had been given more support by the French and particularly Americans, would have succeeded where both the French and Americans failed.

make no mistake, in vietnam the US forces killed a disproportionately high amount of the vietnamese because they were much much more poorly armed, and the USA was murdering civillians left right and centre, search and destroy missions would leave 6 dead for every weapon captured. the USA's actions in vietnam are as accurately described as war as they are genocide.

We did not take any foreign combatants from them.

Because they are human, many of the North Vietnamese landlords was indeed wrongly treated. Land reforms are necessary for that period to re-distribute wealth more evenly, I do not attest to that, if not even support that. Yet the land reforms in NV not only did not result in compensation for the owners but also led to many deaths. The land reform was chaotic as it was lead by greed and long-built hatred and many commoners was peer-pressured by others to throw accusations towards the now powerless landlord class, because they do not want to be seen as "land-lord sympathizer" accusations that they would not have thrown otherwise. My great great grandfather was a minor landlord, he is known in the region for giving out generous loan and a significant of those were not required to be given back. When he was accused on the grounds of his wealth, he was executed. Yet because of his good deeds and lack of evil, many peasants, powerless to protect him, instead did what they can to repay, they buried him and marked his body. Thanks to that, decades later after unification, my family were able to go back to North Vietnam (from SV) to find his body and properly bury it; a blessing as many bodies were never marked and found. Another point is that a large number of the landlords that are executed were supporters of Viet Minh as they used their wealth to aid the revolution with many of their children are serving military within the People's army. For example, Nguyễn Thị Năm, a wealthy businesswomen and land-owner in North Vietnam contributed endless wealth and land towards the cause of revolution. Her property used to house many important figure in NV like Võ Nguyễn Giáp, Lê Đức Thọ, Trường Chinh. Her two sons were in the People's army and she was the leader of the Vietnam Women's Union in her province yet it did not stop her to become one of the earliest victim if execution in the land-reform. Ho Chi Minh lost all his de-facto power in the VCP after the land-reform for a reason, he had to do an official apology to the public for a reason after the land-reform was done, not because of the idea of land-reform but how it was chaotically conducted and how many it killed.
