Vietnamese Snail Feast in Saigon - Ốc A Sòi Restaurant

When I was visiting Saigon, one of the meals I knew I needed to try, was a Vietnamese style snail meal. Read my blog post here: migrationology.com/eating-sna...
Ốc is a word in Vietnamese that means snails, and they are extremely common to eat in Vietnam. Walking around Saigon you’ll find plenty of restaurants that have a host of unknown mollusk shelled creates, on display, that are ready to be cooked however you like them.
Located just down the street from the hotel where I was staying in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), was a street that was home to a number of different snail restaurants that opened up in the evening. After walking along the road a number of times, I decided to eat at Ốc A Sòi, a good looking Vietnamese snail restaurant with a few seats and chairs available right along the road.
Ốc A Sòi had a full menu, but I had no clue what to order, so rather than browse through the menu, I decided to go up to the trays of fresh snails and see which ones looked good. I literally only knew about what half of the snails were, the others I had no clue… that’s part of the fun of eating and traveling. All the staff at Ốc A Sòi were extremely nice, and they patiently waited as I took my time choosing which snails to eat, and even making suggestions about snails they thought I would enjoy. Once you’ve chosen which snails you’d like to eat, you can then order them cooked in a number of different ways, from stir fried to steamed with lemongrass, to sautéed and coated in salt and chili. I chose a number of different snails and methods of cooking, and then happily sipped on a Saigon beer as I waited for our meal to arrive.
The first Vietnamese snail dish I tried in this video was Ốc hương rang muối ớt, Babylonia areolata snails, that were sautéed and coated in a salty chili and lime seasoning. The snails were a little on the chewy side, a little like squid, and the seasoning was flavorful and salty - definitely a good beer snack. One of the snails that I had seen at the front of the restaurant was ốc len xào dừa, mud creepers that were curried in coconut milk and topped with Vietnamese coriander. They were almost the texture of oysters, slimy and slot, and coated in sweet coconut milk. Probably my favorite Vietnamese dish of the meal was sò điệp nướng mỡ hành, I guess not even snails at all, but they were scallops, roasted over charcoal, and topped with scallion oil and chopped peanuts. The combination was something I’d never had before, and it was incredibly delicious. For my last snail, I had ốc tỏi, a huge snail that tasted almost like squid, and had a lovely sweet flavor.
I had an amazing time eating snails and shellfish seafood in Saigon, and not only was the food good, but just like much of the food in Vietnam, the atmosphere of the restaurant and the culture of eating was fantastic. There are many snail restaurants to try in Vietnam and throughout Saigon, but I went to Ốc A Sòi since it was right down the street from where I was staying.

I love watching your videos before I sleep since it's very therapeutic for me. You're one of the few people, (besides Anthony bourdain) that I enjoy watching. You are authentic and original, plus you're facial expressions are HILARIOUSs. Most of the cuisines in your videos remind me of my grandmother's cooking and the times when I traveled and ate A LOT of street food. I'm both Burmese and Vietnamese so I've grown up eating lots of food and exotic fruits . If you ever get a chance, there's this really cool place in Virginia called Eden center. I think you will enjoy the similar authentic Viet and Thai style cuisine. I also think it would be an awesome idea to make food videos in new places, and I'm looking forward to it !! I would suggest Israeli cuisine-I've been to the markets in Jeruselum and there are many little food stands selling a variety of fruits , Ruglah (oh you should definitely try the ruglah!! It's like little chocolate pastries) and so much more. I've encountered small food courts that cater really nice sauteed lamb pops and traditional falafel . Secondly (sorry if I'm going on too long), I really think and HOPE you will consider making maybe a candy video??...or even a chocolate review. I'm a chocolate lover, but I don't know if you take any liking to candy and those sort of things. But yea, you're doing such a great job, and it's amazing how you're doing what you love , which is really inspiring !! :)

Holly, do you know where this restaurant is? Every time I came back to Saigon, I ended up staying right behind Ben Thanh Market and ate the only Oc street restaurant on the one side of the market. I think that restaurant only opens at night. Service is not so good and way overpriced. I used to be a Saigonese but have not been living there for about 24 years so I really don't know where to get specialty food anymore. I am an escargot lover so if you know a nice escargot restaurant, please let me know! Thanks so much.
@minhnguyen10893

Zumbi Abbie I haven't had a chance to eat at that restaurant where Mark visited. I usually have "Oc" at some restaurants on To Hien Thanh street, opposite of Big C supermarket, district 10. The whole street sells "Oc" so you can choose any you like. Or other place I often visit these days is "Oc Khanh", on Nguyen Binh Khiem street, in district 1. Come visit if you have time! Oh, and welcome back to Sai Gon after 24 years (while i'm just 22 years old).

Thank you, Holly! I will certainly cab down there to eat. I was from district 11 right across from Bach Khoa University, in Cu Xa Lu Gia, so I ate up and down 3 Thang 2 Ave in district 10 in my day as a young pupil! Thanks again and cheers! :)

you should keep the shells and boil them to sanitize them and then leave them on beaches with wild hermit crabs. There is a a shell shortage going on in the wild right now and the crab population can't grow bigger than the amount of shells available. Every little bit helps.

Depending on what kind of snail you have, then you can dip in ginger fish sauce. For some, you just use fish sauce without ginger. Also, Mark, if you could add some fish sauce to the scallops, they taste even better. And they added some green onions with oil, not butter. Anyway, thanks for the video, making me crave for those snails. I am going back to Vietnam this New Year so I can enjoy them :-)

actually, in vietnamese, we called "snail" like the ones you got in France is "ốc sên" which are actually no one would eat them. the "snails" here cuz Mark got no English word to describe what it is - it's actually called "ốc", they live under water, unlike "snails" obviously or "sò" (it's like "clamps" but we got a lot of types) and we have various types of "ốc" : ốc dừa, ốc gạo, ốc len, and sò huyết, sò lông....etc. - they are clean and healthy, unlike "ốc sên" aka "snails" though - they are kinda ewwww i know, LOL xD

It's impossible to eat those here at the US, cuz finding fresh Ốc (you know that fresh ingredients are crucial when it comes to shellfish cooking) is extremely hard (and not to mention they are super expensive). Anw, glad that you have some more good experience at my hometown ^^

I never thought I'd enjoy watching someone eat, but I love your videos... I will know in the next day or so if my employer will let me have some time off work. I just got back from my first time in Thailand about 3 weeks ago and want to go back.... My plan, if things work out, is to leave the U.S. on Jan. 28th and stay in Phuket for 3 weeks, then fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia for a couple weeks, and now after watching your videos fly to Saigon for a couple weeks, then back to Thailand until April 15th... Wish me Luck!!!! Thanks for the suggestion on your second hotel...I already checked it out and it looks nice...

you can have anything to your taste, cocacola, pepsi, 7up, sprite, tea, sugarcane juice... but you should have it with ice. I also like "dừa tắc" it's coconut water with 'tắc" (I'm too lazy to look it up, but it's a relative of lime) this drink makes my mounth feels fresh especially when you eat oily dishes like grill, fried food....

lol judging by your facial expressions, it seems like it takes a while for your brain to process the flavor.

That's actually one of the things I love about Mark. I've always been highly skeptical of TV hosts who make 'yum' expressions immediately after putting the food in their mouths. At that point, you've barely even tasted the food! Especially if it's good food, with lots of complexity. The flavors evolve as you chew.
