To get around the scissor thing on planes you can bring a dental floss container and use the top to cut your thread! That's what I used to do when I was sewing pointe shoe ribbons on planes ;)
I used to have something that looked a bit like a Pac-Man character, but the mouth had a little blade. It was targeted at cross stitchers. I don’t know if it’s still available or even passes the tests now x
I used to be like that, now Eds has caught up with me and I’m not pushing, pushing to get things done my whole life has slowed down. My sleep isn’t anywhere near being good, but I don’t have loads of things buzzing around in my head. Do this, do that, write reports, get that done for that class, do this for that person, while I’m setting it up I might as well do it another language. My mind still isn’t quiet but it’s better than it was. I still do things while I listen to tv, but I can just watch now too....thinking about it, I suppose emailing customers, reading or finding a kindle book, reading the news...yeah, I do more than I first thought 😂
Thanks Gayle! This helps so many who need to craft while in a relaxed position due to physical issues like me. I call it Belly Crafting...lol. a lot has been done that way. Haha
Whoever suggested this was a fantastic choice. I even wrote the top ten down 🤓 plus the bonus is one of my favorite things to do 😉 By the way Good morning Gayle. Have a blessed day. Hugs 😘💕❤
The very first of your videos that I ever watched was your painted papers! Then YT started suggesting your junk journaling videos and, well, I fell down the rabbit hole with 30K other people.
Hahahaha!!!! I once tried loom knitting with a cat nearby. Did you know that all cats will jump through hoops given half a chance? Mine went from 2 yr old kitten to giant circus lion in under .00003 seconds!
Petting a dog is the best thing to do while watching tv. It is also so relaxing and great for your health. My lapdog passed away recently and my other dog has no love for the lap. Give your little furry baby a hug for me and my lonely lap. :)
I enjoyed these little projects/activities to build up a stash of “pretties” or additional page decorations. I’m amazed at how you’re so organized with all of your scraps! Tfs!
As I am disabled and live in pain, other than sewing, I have done EVERYTHING thus far in my recliner with trays and a bookshelf next to me. My first journal was a altered book, you had told us about Crafty Irina. I make lots of ephemera and create a mess. This was a wonderful video of new ideas.
I have issues with a recent disability too. Crafting gives me something to focus on, but it's something where I can still take breaks when I need to. That's one of the things I love about it. You in any Facebook groups or hanging around on Twitter?
Thanks for sharing your ideas. So many things to do and just what I needed. I was getting tired of doing my fussy cutting. Next to try is the fabric ruffles. I love, love, love them.
My earliest memories are of my sweet grandma sitting in front of the tv with tatting or knitting or quilting or some kind of hand work in her lap working happily while she watched! This brought back those warm memories and gave me some more ideas to add to my list of projects I already do to be productive while enjoying tv. Thanks so much for your creativity!
Hi Gayle. I'm so like you in that I am always looking for something to keep my hands busy. I have loads of little projects to work on while I'm sitting and lots of little pouches of things in my bag. Any time is craft time lol x
I think the crazy quilt painted and doodled on papers are wonderful. Great idea. I was watching a tutorial somewhere (I watch so many I can never remember which one taught me what). Anyway, the tutorial was about aging paper without needing to tea dye it. This lady used brown shoe polish. Once dried the polish does not rub off, you can go as dark or light as you want and polish comes in lots of colors. She says it goes a long way and it costs her a lot less than using ink and saves the mess of tea or coffee dying. I haven’t tried it yet but I thought I would pass the idea on.
I don't know if this is a new idea but I tried this and thought I would share. When you separate napkins there are the extra pieces well I hate to waste and so I stamped on them then cut them out, roughly, then glued them down. I made a card with them. I used blue tissue paper then cut out little houses stamped onto the napkin and glued that down and embellished with gems. It worked very well. Sometimes you can't find the napkin you need so that's why I tried this.
Jody Conrad, that's a great idea! And I like reducing what I would have tossed, because we aren't allowed to recycle paper products like napkins and paper towels, even if unused.
Cool. What kind of ink do you use to stamp on the napkins? Stazon? Archival? I'm thinking some inks would bleed and look fuzzy, and some might not react well to the glue. I love the printed tissue paper sold for collage, but it gets pricey, and I have a ton of stamps so this could work.
Great suggestion by the subbie who asked 😊 Clusters are something I really need to get to grips with this year as I am far too OCD about them! So glad you added inking in there too Gayle, I was starting to get worried about you for a moment there lol ❤️ xx
I was wondering if you could talk about rice paper? I went on Etsy to buy some and there were all kinds like undercooked, overcooked, raw and possibly half eaten. I couldn’t tell which would be for making spring rolls and which for journals - so I didn’t buy any. Is it really made out of rice? And while we’re talking, is straw paper actually made from straw? I’m so confused 🤷♀️ Love 💗 you - always learn so much!!!
Search Etsy for decorative rice paper or Stamperia rice paper and you will find our crafting rice paper. I’m not sure about straw paper. It’s Italian and the only place I know to get it is Roxy Creations on Etsy. ❤️
I got some from Blick's but they are far and away overpriced. I like to do scherenschnitte, and it's also good for making bookcloth though, so it was worth it.
Thank you!! My granddaughter is having back surgery in March she will be in hospital for 5 days. I was staying to help her mom just be there for them. I hate to just sit so this is some great ideas!!!
Thank you so much for this! Wonderful ideas. I kept a list to remind myself when I’m looking for things to do while sitting or waiting. I appreciate it.
Gayle do you have a list of all your favorite Etsy shops ? I'm addicted to Etsy. Lord knows us ladies love to buy more craft supplies. Those fabric clusters would be great as long garlands far Xmas trees or anything really love your videos
The list would be too long!!! I put links is SO many of my videos as I show stuff from my favorite shops, so check below the videos to find my favs!! ❤️
Great video full of fantastic ideas. I wonder how long it will be until JJs dog hair reach your table. I am forever picking my dogs hair out of my work....lol
Argh! I’m trying to get him used to the brush but it’s going to be a process! I’m hoping to brush him three times a week to keep the flying hair at a minimum! Lol! 🐶❤️
Love these ideas, Gayle! Especially since my fur baby does not like me in my craft room and wants me on the sofa sleeping beside me while watching TV! I don't like just sitting idle either!
Great viewer suggestion and great video, thanks, Gayle. I always have to figure how jobs I do in front of the telly, or how I store things and where I put them are safe from 3 very curious and cheeky (read: naughty!) indoor cats... 😻🙄😂
I haven't been making journals for very long and am trying to sell a few. Some success, any hints? Also, I LOVED the mini envelopes put together to make a tuck or pocket. I'll be making those next. Thanks, love your videos.
My suggestion on selling is to use social media to the fullest...Facebook, Instagram, RU-vid. People have to know about you to want to buy from you. 😁❤️
Love the little envelop clusters! However in front of the tv I can do nothing, because I watch only good movies :) But my fussycut time is during YT videos when I watch craft with me videos. I get bored doing nothing during those videos and start smoking. I want to smoke less, so I fussycut now :)
Wasn't my idea, but I just went crazy making those little folded envelopes last night! They are adorable!!! Thanks Gayle! And Jimmy Joe is just the cutest little guy ever!
Love this top 10 list and one other “list” I’ve seen you do. Thank you and I cheer for MORE 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Thanks as it is a wonderful quick reference to look back at.
I love this one! Spent 20 minutes after trying to find that Grand Hotel paper pad at a reasonable price. Sadly, I didn't find it at a reasonable price :( I just fell in love with that pack!
One more thing I do during soap operas with my husband (yep, he likes them), is to make bead dangles. I like that you put these all into one video so I can find them when I need an idea!
Great video!! I needed some of the ideas. Things I can do while watching TV with my husband and not have to sit in craft area away from him in another room. Love all you do thanks again for sharing!!💜
Great video! These are also good for quick and easy things to do in the art room if you only have a few minutes or you're having a lack of inspiration or motivation. THANKS FOR SHARING THESE IDEAS! ❤
I enjoyed watching EVERY SINGLE SECOND of this video!!! (How else would I have ever known I could hand-sew ruffles even though I don't have a sewing machine!!! LOL!
Traveller's Notebook. They're narrow saddle stitched or stapled notebooks that are held into a cover with elastic. You can change out the notebooks once you fill them up. They come in a number of standard sizes. Google Midori, Fauxdori, Happydori. There are tons of DIY videos on how to make them. People use them as travel planners, travel journals, scrapbooks, mini sketchbooks, diaries/planners, etc.
These are all so helpful. Sometimes, just knowing where to start helps. Also, seeing how you organize your projects is helpful too. I can get overwhelmed in that department, too. (-:
It was really helpful having these all together and the way you organised the scraps etc. too. ❤️❤️Great video I can start doing things that I hadn't thought of that isn't just fussy cutting tfs hugs Elaine xx 😁😁🌼🌼
This is really a great video on getting ready to make a journal so we’re not overwhelmed by it all before I begin my larger journal...it sure helps to make things ahead of time so when you need something I won’t have to stop & make it.. I try & make two or three pieces of memorabilia while I’m learning each video so later I can make more ....your right about watching TV, I set up a assembly line procedure, so it will go faster also....
Great video, I’ve done some, I’m going to put my completed ephemera all in one basket. I use a accordion file folder to hold my coffee/tea papers, envelopes and book pages. I also keep the pages I’m going to use for a journal I’m working on in it too. TN fits perfect in one. Happy to hear Jimmy Joe is doing good, happy for you guys. 👍❄️❄️❄️
I’m like you Gayle, I have to be doing something when I watch TV. Time is very valuable and I want to make sure I am productive. TV is not high on my list of things I like to do. I really only watch TV when my husband is watching, to keep him company.
I always ask this question in live chat, no one has answered, i myself take my adult coloring book. If i crocheted that would be great but i don't 😒. Hope to find some ideas here. Most importantly having a bag ready to!
Great video! HOW CAN YOU say your not good at fussy cutting; as that was a quick and great job on butterfly. I have yet to be able to cut antenna right on anything. 😂😂😂 Your the best!!!
I could spend a whole day bingeing on TV just fussy cutting before I get to the next thing on my list. I had back surgery on the 23rd of December and I'm so behind! Thanks Gayle for the ideas that will keep me busy as I recuperate. I am walking every day now and going a little further every time. Love your new bag from Hobby Lobby!
These were great! I've been trying to organize and use my time more efficiently. Some great ideas and tips! Thank you for sharing. All the best from Alberta, Canada!
Very interesting video but I didn't understand a lot of it or know what you were making and what it's for... you're assuming that everybody watching knows who you are but I've never seen a video of yours... so please explain a bit sometimes when you're making something, for the completely new people!
Look up scissors size for airplane I put my small ones on a ribbon around my neck. I put them through scanner I don't wear at first Never had a problem, I do my embroidery on plane (under 4 in?)
A mass making sewing tip… separate the sewing into all fabric and fabric/mixed media. This helps save the needles. Swap them out for each type of sewing you are doing.
Thank you for these great ideas for tv watching, traveling (car, plane, or hotel), or waiting in the car or waiting rooms. It can be hard to choose which fun thing to do today. I have an additional idea someone may also want to try. I take a small crochet hook and thin yarns and make little crocheted flowers, chains, or just small squares. I plan to use them in clusters.
Great video! I take what I call snips on the plane an have not had any issues. The blade is less than an inch and perfect for threads. I have also taken kids scissors with a rounded tip without problems. I get them during back to school sales, so if they ARE taken at TSA, I am not out a lot of $.
Congratulations on a Jimmy Jo! He’s a cutie! On the ruffles if you had to guess how wide and how long do you make the fabric before sewing? I just need a ball park, I tend to make things WAY to short and end up with mini messes! 😂
Watching this years later and I am sure that you know this by now as others have likely told you. You can bring scissors on a plane. As long as the blades are shorter than 4 inches they are allowed on the plane. Just look at the regulations on line. I bring my scissors on every plane trip snd never had an issue.
Hey, Gayle. I just bouoght that exact paper trimmer. I have eye problems, and those markings on the arm are IMPOSSIBLE to see. Any tips? I've tried Sharpie and paint pens to highlight the measurements, but all I got was a mess that had to be cleaned up with hand sanitizer.
I wonder since the measurements are raised if you could rub an ink pad over them to have them stand out more? That’s about my only idea this morning. ❤️
I really enjoyed your 10 (11) ideas. I do the fussy cutting all the time. In fact my arthritis is getting so bad around my thumb I am having a terrible time with pain around my thumb using my scissors. How much pressure do those scissors have on the area between your thumb and index finger? Do they cut well in very small areas? What size are they? Again enjoyed your vid.
The scissors are available on my website (listed in the description box under my videos) under Gayle’s Favorite Things at gayleagostinelli.com/gayles-favorite-things/. They advertise that they are good for arthritic hands. I do think they really help! ❤️
At 18:10 Did you make your book that you had the “tinies” in? If so what is the name or link of the video? If you did make it but you don’t have a video would you consider making a video on it in the very near future? Thank you for sharing with us all these amazing ideas, I’m always looking for something to do while watching tv or on our monthly 6hr trip to see my drs.
I love my printer! It’s an Epson 2550 EcoTank printer. It’s filled with bottles of ink. Very economical as it prints 4,500 prints before needing refilled. It’s available on my website (listed in the description box under my videos) under Gayle’s Favorite Things at gayleagostinelli.com/gayles-favorite-things/. If you purchase a printer, I’d really appreciate you going through my website as I get a small commission from Amazon at no cost to you. Hope this helps! ❤️
