Unfortunately, they had pegan sacrificial rituals where they would murder their own children. The same heathen rituals the Phenetions, Egyptians, and Babylonians did before them. They were just following after the beast like modern Lucifer worshipers do today.
Sir Mannelig Early one morning before the sun did rise And the birds sang their sweet song The mountain troll proposed to the fair squire She had a false deceitful tongue Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no To you I will give the twelve great steeds That graze in a shady grove Never has a saddle been mounted on their backs Nor had a bit in their mouths To you I will give the twelve fine mills That stand between Tillo and Terno The mill stones are made of the reddest brass And the wheels are silver-laden To you I will give the gilded sword That jingles from fifteen gold rings And strike with it in battle as you will On the battlefield you will conquer To you I will give a brand new shirt The lustrous best for to wear It is not sewn with needle or thread But crocheted of the whitest silk Gifts such as these I would gladly receive If you were a Christian woman But I know you are the worst mountain troll From the spawn of Necken and the devil The mountain troll ran out the door She wailed and she shrieked so loudly "Had I gotten that handsome squire From my torment I would be free now" Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no In case anyone was interested in the lyrics.
Sir Mannelig is actually a bad translation in the sense that it is not a translation at all. Mannelig is a word with a distinct linguistic meaning. It is not a name. In the Nordic languages, mannelig simply means something or anything that has to do with males. It can be understood as manly, but I am not sure that covers it.
Dovenpeis Mannelig was actually a pretty common name in the early 12-13th century here in Sweden. It is true that it also means manly etc but it was also a name. Sweden had many names that also meant things back then and even as recently as the 1800's. Names like Fagerlid, Starkerman, Rikeman etc. All names that is also words. Herr Mannelig is most certainly a name. Herr = Sir followed by Mannelig with a capital M is a name. No doubt.
Original song was not swedish. This song is a remake in 1840s. But the words are the same. Circa 810s. Do love how the swedes still roll the Rs. If you could understand it fully. It would hurt you.
My wife and I played these songs for hours for my son back when he was 1 year old. For some reason this was the only thing that would make him fall asleep. We tried hundreds of songs and nothing worked but these.
Hey thanks, man. It's really difficult hearing about how badly native Americans were treated in the early days of the country and a tragedy how much of their culture was lost. Basically the same stuff the Romans did to Western Europeans a thousand years earlier. Hold on to what you have left and we'll try and hold on to what we have left. Hopefully our descendants will keep it alive after us and humanity will keep all it's unique cultures through the ages. The alternative would be so boring.
My heart yearns for my homeland. Born in South Africa but my forefathers came from Norway and Denmark. The viking blood never really leaves your veins...
I'm 4th generation and actually descended from the viking explorer Leif Erikson (1st European to discover America). My great-grandfather came to SA during WW1. Ugh, I wish I could go back, but it's difficult with all the new immigration laws.,
If you are of Norwegian and/or Danish origin, you should have no problems to go back there. I mean every peasant from Afghanistan seems to be able to move to Scandinavia without problems it seems.
I think it would be cool if we all stop yearning for places we have no real connection to. Yeah, it's great that your ancestors came form somewhere else but hey - you didn't. You are where you are right now. Stop believing in a magical fairy land that only exists in your head and start loving and living your life here and now. You only get one shot at this world. Make it count, yo.
I’m proud of mine too. Both my parents are Finns and everyone I am related to (going back at least 400 years) are Finnish too :) I am actually, tho, first generation Australian ..... I do wish that parents had never chosen to emigrate to Australia I love the motherland with most of my heart
i think swedish women are the most beautifull women in the world, although, ive never seen them in their own country so how will i ever really know them.
regex tex 👏🏻 yes! And Finnish people in general are kind of hard to make friends with (well not hard...but we are kind of not quick to race into new friendships if that’s any sense?) but once you are a friend, you will be for life! Unless you betray them...then you’d better run fast!
indians and europeans have connected roots we can see this in traditional swastika's it is used by every European ethnic group but now considered "evil"
Franz Ferdinand Only the old elite Aryans of India had connection to Europeans because they themselves were descended from Indo-Iranians and indigenous Dravidians. The indo-Iranians came from Central Asia prior to invading/migrating to India and before that they originated in the Eurasian steppe living besides the Slavs. This is why Indo-Iranian languages is considered a part of Indo-European ones. The most widely spoken Indo-Iranian language or Indo-European language is actually Hindi.
Vivek Bhushan: the duality of The People and the Norse is phenomenal. The amazing similarities between ancient world cultures gives us an idea of how truly universal humans are, just beneath the surface.
I made an ancestry DNA testing and i believe most of Northeuropean people have nordic DNA in them. Mine is 17.8% 🥰🥰👍 and i am proud of it also have Italian and east european DNA. We are all mixed up and all ONE. Skoll!
This song reminds me of the Sagas that my grandmother told me as bedtime stories when I was a little boy in Sweden. I am student of history and find it sad that much of the lore and Sagas are quickly fading away. Many of the Sagas as told to me were morality plays with much attached wisdom.
Agreed, now more than ever we the guidance of our forebears. The Sagas, Fair Tales, myths and fables. Or rather it is because we are without that guidance we have times such as these. Best we past them on eh?
This music is incredible. I'm Jewish and I've always loved viking culture and have felt strongly drawn to it. And yet there are people who feel drawn to Jewish culture. I think the lesson is that humans are amazing, and our combined histories are beautiful. We're all here against the odds after millennia
+abdelssami brahmi That's just you're muslim religion talking, Israel does some fucked up shit but that just pales in comparison to Islam and the Muslim world. Read the Quran and Hadith's and you'll leave Islam as I did.
I’m of Nordic Heritage a Vinlander here in North America so proud to be Nordic by blood Nordic-Pagan by faith so accepting and tolerant Keep up being the worlds positive role models Sweden Norway Denmark Iceland Finland and Faroe Island !
Who would have thought that half way around the world, born into a culture totally different from the Scandinavians, yet this song is one of my favs. It is haunting and as a Malay from Malaysia, I just can't get enough of Garmarna....
If you are interested in Nordic music, I strongly recommend you to look at this music though. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AJAYwsmRl5o.html
Herr manneling is about a man who refuses to marry a troll, despite her gifts. Because she isn't a christian woman. Just saying for those who think this is pagan 'viking' music. :)
Lisa Plambeck Proud of what? Proud of something you literally had nothing to do with? Should all Germans then also be ashamed for the crimes against humanity the country perpetrated during WW2...?
GorillaGuerilla Proud of their heritages, proud of their unique cultures and histories, just as members of every other ethnic group have a right to be.
So beautiful. I'm Mexican American and I'm so interested in the Viking culture. Beautiful women and such handsome men and the launage is just pure and beautiful and the music so devine. I love the history of the Vikings and the stories they tell and the love for their Gods. I can listen all day....
@@ingridlaskova1878 Mexican indian? whats that theres none. I wouldnt call them indians. Natives there in mexico though. They are all mexican. Were hispanics cause of mixed with spaniards and natives american.
Not surprisingly I could not understand a word. For that reason the voices in effect become another instrument, and perhaps that makes the songs even more powerful. Thank you for posting!
Beautiful, just beautiful. I love different cultures from around the world. The ways people lived in past times. The music they made. Would be a great loss to the world to lose sight of our past. Thanks so much for bringing this to us all.
I mean the same.I have origin from Slavic people.I am from Croatia. But i also very like culture from all over the world.Particularly celtic, Viking. And americans red Indian. In facto all very old tradicional.👌😃💖
I’m completely Scandinavian and Nordic, and my father showed me this cause he wanted me to learn a bit about our culture, I’m so glad he shows me this. 🇫🇮🇳🇴
thats a complete fucking lie. lmao you arent apart of them youre black. like waht the fuck. you know I call myself american. and american means anyone can be apart of the country it doesnt only holds to whites. which arent racist all in fact africas more racist lmao to asians and whites since white farmers are being killed over there. Im hispanic. I dont think ive had it rough because of my skin color. Im certainly part spaniard by blood and flesh but im more native american. I was born in 2002 and America. Americas different than the scadanavian trio. and its the fact that is youre not scandanavian and never will be. unless you have sex and have kids with a man whos actually scandanavian you are not but your children are will be scandanavian.
The song calls me to my roots that are deep. May anyone with the blood of the Norse feel the song bloom in their hearts and their blood churn as they hear a piece of our culture.
Such beautiful music; such a wonderful culture! Strong will, strong songs and yet so delicate and pretty, I feel that the art of this culture truly represents its people.
I absolutely love this, it brings me pictures of some of my heritage. And the ability to listen to the sound of what my ancestors used to sound like. I am 8th generation since moving to America.
@@chrisselman6629 ,Herr Manneling Is a SWEDISH song. And My praises to Allfather and to the Mighty Thunderer have a general character and they are obviously not bond to "Herr Manneling" And have you noticed that in this video,After Herr Manneling, there Is Yggdrasil,a HEATHEN Song ( surely you know that in Norse Mythology there Is Yggdrasil, the Cosmic tree, that sustains Nine Worlds ( Niflheimr,Midgardr,Muspellsheimr,Svartalfheimr,Helheimr,Alfheimr,Asgard,Vanaheimr and Jotunheimr). Alas,I know that Herr Manneling Is a Christian Song, but It couldn't be otherwise, given that It has been created in Middle Age Christian Scandinavia and not in Heathen Viking Age. It doesn't matter,I'll say it eternally: Glory and honor to Odin and Thor Our Gods, eternally.
I have always bee drawn to the Viking history and art and have wondered why found out that my great grandfather came from Denmark , be great to find how far my danish heritage goes ,proud to be part Danish.
Found this by accident, am very happy I did because it's so calming,I could listen to all day even though I don't understand the words. And it also makes me feel to my nordic/vicking ancestry.
I feel really sad about what's going on nowadays in nordic nations. It is my request as an Indian to not forget your identity, your culture dear Nordic people.
+melechdesmotes Japanese culture is based off of honor to the family. Scandinavian culture is based off of strength of the family unit. Western culture is based off of "uniqueness" and individualism.
Sært at du ikke inkulderede os sære hobitter. Der på grund af historien deler jeres sprog. Slå op hvornår Island blev selvstændig. I am not entirely proud. How the sausage taste and how it was made. Are 2 stories... -Yours Fred

One more reason to love Nordic and the Vikings who had a big impact on the known world and till to this day. Hail and raises your horn with mead of the Gods
? Christopher Sørensen your proud that they desamated the Irish culture? 8th June 793, when Vikings destroyed the abbey on Lindisfarne, and killed the monks for no reason. I would just honor it . I wouldn't be proud of it
@@roboparks Well, about said monks, Vikings treating Christians like that is just giving them a taste of their own medicine. I could also give you 1000 reasons as to why Christians should not be proud of their religion. And there would be much better reasons than the destruction of an abbey. And to the OG poster, be proud of your culture, many attempted to eradicate it, but no-one succeeded. Keep it alive and well, and remember to make your ancestors proud.
Vikings were more than warriors, they were brilliant sailors, navigators, explorers and traders. Christianity changed their attitude to the afterlife which weakened them. You can admire and celebrate their culture and strengths without hating others race or religion
Following the translation added to the experience so much! It was possible to hear the closeness of the words to English and to follow and understand it with the help of the text. My Anglo-Saxon ancestry awoke and I was transported...thank you for your effort, so much appreciated! : )
ABINASH TALUKDAR Vikings were great but Slavs were stronger (and still are) but we share the same roots with the Nords so technically Slavs are like Eastern European Vikings
@@BudgetGainsByJJ many of Balkan countries like, serbs, croats,Hungary,Bosnian,or even Crimea, its under ottoman ruled for a hundred years, so what kind of strong is it? 🤣
@@BudgetGainsByJJ do you remeber the Swedish Rus vikings that (Rus)sia gets its name from? It was after 840 that Scandanavian Vikings-who were known in Eastern Europe as “Varangians” or “Rus”-established Viking rule over Slavic tribes in what came to be called Kievan Rus. Its so funny to see putin claiming Ukraine while some Swedish vikings first laid the foundation to both Ukraine and Russia. You say that the slavs where stronger. Rus vikings where a minority in eastern europe and still they where in command.
If you liked this music I can deeply recommend Myrkur. A danish woman who has made two black metal albums in the same name. There has been some acoustic songs here and there on the albums and some singles, but last year she dropped a complete album, Folkesange, with just music like this. In my own humble opinion, I haven't found any music in this nordic style that tops that record. Maybe Osi And The Jupiter has some stuff that could come close but, man, Myrkur is just another level, the ambient feeling is just completely captured, I live in western almost northern part of sweden (depends on who you ask), and when you drive around or hike through fjords, Myrkur just completly sets and capture that tone!
Hah røvskæg! Nej jeg er helt seriøst med på en af optagelserne... Hun er en ven. Men lykke til på succes. De fleste optagelser er i danmark og skåneland.
My paternal great-grandparents, on my father's mother's side, were Swedish. Nordic culture has always attracted me, despite the fact that there have been many mixes throughout those two generations.
