My favorite line in this song is "To my everlasting shame, silence took me", which I *think* is Tuomas saying "I watched her being corrupted and said nothing because she loved him. I should have spoken out before she was too far gone, and I will live the rest of my life with this regret."
Metallica is one reason why Tuomas started Nightwish. He was not a metal fan until he attended a concert in Kansas to see Guns and Roses and Metallica. He was studying as an exchange student at the time. Tomas has said " changed my life in many ways. I don't think I would be here without . Here it is in Tuomas' own words. "If I remember correctly, my first single would’ve been by Metallica. This was in 1992 when I was spending some time as an exchange student in Kansas for a year, and my host family took me to a Metallica and Guns N’ Roses concert. The two of them toured together for about a year I think, and I got to see them in Kansas City. There were 80,000 people in the city’s football stadium and it completely blew my mind. I didn’t know about Metallica back then. I was still all about classical, maybe a little bit of Gary Moore and Queen every now and then, but no heavy music at all. I only went because they’d been kind enough to buy me a ticket as a surprise - but when Metallica started playing it changed my life. It sounds romantic but that’s truly what happened. When I got home from that trip I went to the nearest record store and literally bought everything by Metallica that I could find, including the single. That song is still a perfect metal song to me. Everybody on the planet knows the riff, even if they’re not a metal fan, and I’m still not tired of hearing it." What was the first gig Tuomas ever went to? “That was it. I was 15 years old, and it was Metallica and Guns N’ Roses in Kansas City on September 23rd, 1992. It was a mind-blowing experience. I remember vividly the feeling I had when the host family told me about the concert: I was not excited at all. I was really happy playing my clarinet and piano because that’s what I knew, and I liked my Mozart. Heavy music did not appeal to me at all but the atmosphere of the 80,000 people once I got in the stadium, and the pyrotechnics and the fireworks at the end; wow! I became a metalhead over night. Guns N’ Roses didn’t really do the trick for me, as Metallica played first and I was so mentally drunk after seeing them that I couldn’t really focus. The first song Metallica played was The Shortest Straw, and from that moment on the next two hours were pure bliss. At that time James Hetfield had burnt his hand in a pyro accident and they had another guitarist, so he was only singing. But then for the very last encore he took the guitar and they did Enter Sandman. It was an incredible night in my life.”
I think Tuomas started NW first to make mood music (movie and chilling) and more softer stuff. With Emppu playing Acoustic guitar and Tarja singing operatic way. Those three had no drummer at all nor bass. LATER he decided to go to metal and specially symphonic melody metal way. Tuomas has said that he did not noted metal in the first place practically at all. As you write when he spent one exchange student year in US he joined Metallica concert and then came metal vibe for him. Check the Demo album....that is not metal for sure.
This is part of the "Tarja removal" trilogy, with "Bye Bye Beautiful" about Tarja and "The Poet and the Pendulum" about Tuomas depression. NW never was an angry band, this one is really the exception, he blamed Marcelo for having changed Tarja and also for his greed. I highly suggest to listen to Bye Bye Beautiful before TPATP, it's a good preparation, also both the open letters are interesting to be read, to better understanding.
I asked my friend who introduced me to NW for 'some heavier stuff'. It was at 8.15hr in the morning. I didn't even had my coffee then. And he send me this. 😳🤯
If you read body language, and/or you're an empath, that documentary tells everything. Its hard to watch, but it speaks volumes. I didn't get on the Nightwish train until after Floor had joined - though I'd once had a copy of Wishmaster in my collection - but I'm invested enough in this band to feel the history and care about it deeply.
It's almost a must to also react to Ayreon. A project by our own maestro Arjen Lucassen . The Day that the World Breaks Down and / or Everybody Dies (live) are great. The man has worked with many many musicians including Marko Hietala (Nightwish), Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Bruce Dickinson (Iron maiden) and Irene Jansen (Floor's sister).
I think it is important to remember that Marcelo is Latin American, and the others are Finnish, and the cultural gap is so huge that they don't really understand where each other is coming from. Still, it seems like Marcelo sees business as a zero-sum game (if someone wins, the other side loses) and made a lot of enemies
BS, I am South European and I feel totally where they are coming from. What a BS..serious. You have passionate mucisians there too, who don't ony care about the money. THIS IS NOT A CULTURAL THING/ Shame on you
I'd say Metallica and Pantera mashed together. On an angry day. lol. Welcome to a new episode of Therapy with Tuomas. Today we're gonna learn to express our anger. To let it all out. Yell everything you ever wanted to say to the person who hurt you the most, in a song. Yell it so loud that the instruments join you. Yell so loud that even the trumpet goes like: Yeah, fuck that bitch! Aaaahhhh, that feels better. :-)
i have this song as my alarm clock ringtone. i like starting my mornings with a solid kick to the teeth from nightwish. its an absolute banger. u should do weak fantasy from tampere next, its not this heavy (nothing else by them is), but its one of their heavier ones and super good imo. always fun to watch you experience nightwish! looking forward to next week's vid!
I find it cool that Tuomas has a little singing part in the song. It's the *Hello how are you* verse. The last time he sung in a song upfront was on AFF album.
The anger...the resentment, the broken heart, a muse that you can no longer feel only yours... all in one song. Hard times...but such a good way to deal with it. Glad that those predictions about Marcelo did not come true ... they are a beautiful family today.😊 The bass moves you to the core... is awesome. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Great reaction...keep'em coming! Greetings from Argentina.
Never seen a Viking lost for words! This song is very much the counterpoint to the Poet and the Pendulum, which is full of grief and despair, plus a little anger - this one is pure rage 🤘
Who did the backing vocals?? Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica and......Tuomas. Maestro can hold a note. The high backing vocals is Tony. Tony has multi range voice. Charlie the Big Brain Singer calls Tony a Power Tenor.
Great reaction, loved your facial expressions of surprise, there is so much more to come for you. You are on of my favourite reactors, lovin your style, prey carry on with the NW journey.
In The Greatest Show on Earth, there's actually a small riff from Metallica when they're building to the final refrain (there's bits and pieces of music with, like, a harpsichord and if you focus, you'll hear a Metallica riff)
Love this reaction! MPG is one of my all-time favorite Nightwish songs. Angry Tuomas makes for kick-tail music! And as a huge Jukka fan, I love seeing him unleashed. On a related note, people can think what they will of Annette (and I prefer Floor), but Dark Passion Play was one the best albums they ever produced...
Haven't even finished the video yet and I already love the song, I mentioned before I'm also on my Nightwish journey and this was a first for me too, I'm loving heavy Nightwish, you were right, the Metallica influence is definitely there, another huge favourite band for me Killing it as always dude, keep it up Skål
Heavier songs: Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean. Dark Chest of Wonders. Wish I had an Angel. All best live with Floor of course. And one with Tarja live: Wishmaster.
This song is a definition of an Angry song. I mean not short "pissed off" moment influenced by some unlucky unfortunate accident, but that deep, intense, hate-anger that can motivate to do things on a long distance run and make a man burn inside. This anger here is close to that "cold" or "ice-cold" hate state mentioned in books with that remark like "his stare turned ice" full of anger....
I'm like a year late to comment but first of all, great reaction!! I cannot go through this song without experiencing like forty-two different emotions... it grabs you by the throat and takes you for a ride because Tuomas (and Marco) poured EVERYTHING into it. Anger, rage, the almost mocking voice in the third verse, Marco's scream that is as much anger as pain, the dull sadness close to the end and then the freaking WAR HORNS. Also definitely agree with your interpretation of Tuomas' anger not being directed at Tarja herself but at her husband, and the pain of losing someone who used to be close. The "Hey Judas, your Christess was our love" always gets me because it is so raw ... Marcelo as Judas, not just being the antagonist but in this analogy betraying Tarja (and killing her; at least, a version of her) and then the essence of it which is like saying.. yeah, she is with you now but she was OUR love first. It's so raw I could cry. Especially the part with "Seek her, seduce her, tame her" almost feels like an absolution towards her, putting the entire blame and agenda on her husband. When I look at what Tarja has said or written about the situation, I empathise with her as much as I do with the rest of the band. I think she had very valid reasons for wanting to leave... in the end it was just an escalation of not having been able or willing to communicate between otherwise very decent people. Life sometimes be like that. It's heartbreaking, but at least now everyone seems to have found their happiness, and we got some beautiful music out of it, too.
Never too late ;). Thanks for the comment. It does exactly what you said and I fully agree. And… communication is always an issue in any relationship. It needs to be maintained.
"I think this is my new favorite Nightwish song." Even if you didn't say that, it's something I always hear ... Every time you put your ear to rest and listen to Nightwish again after listening to other bands or other genres, and you come back and you feel like they are outdoing themselves and sounding better That Last time, it's actually a feeling that comes from listening to a lot of other music, which although it's very good, doesn't handle feelings and lyrics at the level of Nightwish, and that set of things that sound so professionally, always seem to stand out. .. I think they actually maintain a stable level in everything they do ... No matter who sings, Anette, Marko, Tarja, Floor ... you always take something to bed with you. .. I'm not saying that Nightwish is the best band, but I'm sure it will be part of a small group of the most special that exist.
An awesome song, I love it. Finally, someone else who heard tones from old James Bond music. Its awesome. Another very heavy song, with a similar chaotic ending is Dead Gardens (w. Tarja). No video or live video but still worth a listen. Thomas wrote the song about writers block. He can write about anything. 🔥🤘
Ah well... let's just hope they are all in a solid state of mind or will be again soon. But I get your point...absolutely! Glad you spotted the shirt :P
It may have already been mentioned but for more heavy Nightwish, look no further than Shudder Before the Beautiful, the show operner for the Vehicle of Spirits DVD
I do think Christess is Tarja ... it actually says very clear that what Marcelo pushing her to ask more money was killing the cooperation between them (killed the love between them, maybe Tuomas-Tarja or Tarja-rest of the band) For me there is a song where you can feel even harder the emotions within .... when Marco sings the chorus in "Bye Bye Beautiful" A good follow up for this song. A last final word to her, a final goodbye, and one as a screaming "Fuck you" to the sky.
This song is a one of a kind, a song that's NEVER going to be played live or a type of song that's never going to be made again. Those times for Tuomas were B.A.D and this song is a vocalization of Tuomas' feelings towards Tarja's husband. It doesn't take a genius to see that his feelings aren't positive (like people these days... yes, that was a corona joke).
This is truely an angry song yes o.o Very cool they can convey it so well :) And it's still melodious/symphonic and epic! I looked at your Nightwish playlist. If you wnat heavy, I suggest Ghost River since you already seen Devil & the deep dark ocean, Slaying the dreamer, Romanticice and this one. That's what came to mind with some hevay stuff :) Ghost river Wacken 2013 :)
I am actually pretty pleased with the thumbnail. I saw some others where they use the album cover. Seemed a bit boring to me :P And yes...Angry Nightwish produces some amazing songs :)
I think there be more angry songs from Tuomas. All this Covid, impossibility of tours, lack of money because of that. Marko is gone. I think Tuomas is angry.
The closest I could come to this in a classical piece is Prokofiev's "Cantata for the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution." Or possibly the death of the Mandarin sequence in Bartok's "The Miraculous Mandarin" (for them what is interested in such things).
This is my "anger management" song, its so intense and honestly brutal, I love it so much even with the dark story behind it, same goes for The Poet and The Pendulum, all that drama/raw emotions made them a lot better
Great reaction! I’ve always gotten a Metallica vibe from this song, but also heard the James Bond bit with the horns at the end. Thoroughly enjoy your reactions.
He did. He told his hosts that he didn't much like metal music so they took him to a Metallica gig as a joke, it was that which triggered the Tuomas musical spark and Mr. Viking is yet to come across the strongest Metallica reference. No spoilers !!
Yeah, I'd say Metallica has a big influence on Tuomas. He went to see their concert when visiting the States back in the early 90's. That was the first time he heard heavier music and it blew him away. So if it weren't for Metallica, we wouldn't have Nightwish. 😁
Other Nightwish songs with the same energy, eh? You won't find any with the same anger, but Tribal is a pretty good runner-up for the heavyweight belt, easy pick 🤘
I agree with the comment section you should go down the Ayreon rabbit hole. Ayreon Universe concert has Marko, Floor and Irene Jansen, Tommy from Kamelot and Hansi from Blind Guardian. But start with The Day The World Breaks Down so you get an idea about Arjen and the Ayreon Universe he has created.
Nightwish was going to be more "folky"..... and then Tuomas went to the US and saw Metallica... Yes. There is a BIG Metallica influence.... Theatre of Tragedy too.
There were a lot going on with Nightwish during the time Tarja was fired. Tarja's husband is certainly one of the players here, but it was not like he was the sole reason things went as they did. It was an ugly breakup and it was handled very publicly in the media... Even the Finnish political figures were asked about these events. But make no mistake, the relationships in the band were not that great when it all came crashing down. Marcelo may have been the one to blow down the house of cards, but it was shaky at best before "End of an Era"...
Possibly the only Nightwish song that has never been played live and never will be. Bye bye beautiful they only for the first few months of their tour and currently they also do not perform the Poet anymore. Everyone has moved on by now so these songs no longer matter. The one I would miss the most would be Poet though as that is such an epic piece of music
I can understand Master Passion Greed, venting the anger. To me, Bye Bye Beautiful feels like kicking someone when they're down, making money off of it, and using someone who had nothing to do with it. I can't really listen to that song.
@@marinaandersson4381 that's totally okay, I didn't mean other people have to dislike it too. It's just how I personally feel. I think the song itself is great, except for the lyrics.
I shall check it out anyways. But I listen to the song and not so much to the backstory. I will respect it but that form of judgement will not be a part of my reaction in this particular case...
Who did the backing vocals? That would be Marko, Tuomas, and the Metro Voices Choir from London. That choir also works very closely with the London Symphony Orchestra, who you also heard on this track. In fact, both are prominent in that entire album, Dark Passion Play. Not to mention that some of this was recorded and mixed at Abbey Road, so you know they spent some money on this! As for the Metallica vibe you were getting? That's expected. Tuomas was studying Botany in the USA as a foreign exchange student in the mid 1990s. His friends a d host family took him to a Metallica show, and that's when he got bit by the music bug. So combine his learning of science, evolution (spoiler alert!), music, and love for classical music, and you get Nightwish... all because of being dragged out to a Metallica show.
Sweet, it just shows the work that goes into something like this. Absolutely amazing! Abbey road...that is special indeed! And hey... music can be a huge influence. I am glad to read your comment. It allows me to understand Tuomas a bit better!
Ooh, thats an angry one my friend....sort of adresses one of the reasons why tarya was let go (her husband, and his greed for more money) Curious what you think! Greetings, ik bedoel, groetjes uit Utrecht :)
@@VikingReacts what i was wondering though, when you go nuts, and headbang, you dont actually hear the song right? I mean, i like seeing you go there, but it seems weird, headbanging without sound ;)
An "ode" to MArcelo, Tarja's husband and manager. He dictated everything. Not suporting her to tour in the USA, because there were not enough fans, small venues ( not very profitable) which goes straight into what NW is about: reaching all their fans and pretty cheap tickets. SHe also suddenly demanded her own tourbus and did not oin rehearsels anymore. Marcelo wanted her to go solo, and she threatened many times she would leave. They HATE and despice him a lot.
I would not wish anger on Tuomas... But DAMN! Angry Nightwish is heavy and rocking great! I'm an old school Tarja era fan, this song hurts in it's way, but is so full on 🤘!
I can understand that. It is 16 years ago and I think they all moved on and gotten to an ok place (Marko will hopefully find his again). I hope all the fans are in a good spot now...just as much!
@@VikingReacts Thanks for the response, keep rocking till your head falls off! 🤘I was in a better than OK place until Marco sent us his letter... I wish best for him above my own desires. Will see what happens in May with the virtual show!
@@VikingReacts "It" always gets harder listening to Floor, that is why Floorgasms are needed! Get them soldiers out to make room for the next wave, right?
No. there is no official video of this, nor is there any performance of them playing this live. They have NEVER played this live, nor will they ever play this live.
Oké didn't see your question the first time. Sorry about that. Well, i liked your reaction, you really enjoyed yourself so thank you very much. And i think it is amazing how these guy's dealt with their anger, . Master passion greed......wow. i heard it many times before but as with every nightwish song, we keep coming back for more . doei!
Yes they were very angry, most of the band despised Tarja's husband and his influence over her. There's a behind the scenes video on youtube were they are taking the piss out of him on tour. Obvious disdain for him. In the background of any shot of Tarja, he was hanging around and the band made it obvious he wasn't welcome. He was trying to become a new unneeded and unwanted member of the band in their eyes and pushing Tarja away or corrupting her towards the band. It turned into a very public spat between Tuomas and Tarja and I seem to remember her husband waded in and made the situation even worse, even if he was just trying to defend his wife.
Mind what you say, otherwise Tarja fans will jump all over you!! I made a similar comment on a Traja Supremacy (Cover) reaction video and got jumped on by FemaleMetalLover who was trying to defend Tarja and Marcelo and blaming "the boys", as she put it, for everything. Trying to use sexism in metal as some form of justification for her assertions and claiming that "the boys" had been caught in telling lies about Tarja and tried to use Marcelo's reply letter as proof! Never realised just how toxic and deluded some people can be! Stay safe.
Oh...I had to deal with that person myself. The best way to deal with that is to simply ignore. She was beyond reasoning. I tried... didn't work. Ignored her afterwards.
@@VikingReacts I tried too. It went back and forth for about 3 days until I politely asked her to stop wasting my time. All her arguments were illogical and not supported by any evidence. They were just her opinion and you know what they say about opinions. They're just like arseholes, everybody's got one lol. Stay safe mate.
@@VikingReacts on a somewhat related topic, I would pay really good money to see Nightwish do a parody on a L'Oréal commercial for a music video. Imagine all that lushious, shiny hair blowing, because this time, everybody has a fan on them.
