Just a quick little video showing how we warm up for our sparring sessions:
We try to slow our speed down to 30% giving us more time to think to help build muscle memory, eventually building to 100% which you will see at the end of the video.
We are North West Historical Fencing: a small HEMA club based in the North West of England and Wales.

What are the shields made of?

These are are 9mm plywood tapering down to 6mm at the edges with leather edging and steel boss. Not the most historically accurate but they make for decent analogues for what we do

i suppose that is a training for western style fighting only, right ?

Western and eastern both have limited parts of the body you are allowed to hit. We allow all areas to be targeted including the face and hands which totally changes how you use the shield, check out our other videos to see what I mean ;)

@@SpearEnjoyer Well... i cannot possibly imagine binding swords with somebody in the eastern style when you spar for real. While i have seen some similar moves of what you are doing in the western style combat, yes.

As far as I'm aware, thrusts with a sword aren't permitted in eastern combat, in which case binding with the blade wouldn't be very useful I agree
