The battle was supposed to be so savage they didn't even have to show it. That ending shot when all of Ragnar's sons look on at the Blood Eagle gives me chills. Alexander Ludwig who plays Bjorn did some of his best acting in this half of season 4. The differences in how they go about the Blood Eagle are apparent. Ragnar was calm and composed but it's because he still respected Jarl Borg. I think Bjorn was holding in a lot and he lost his temper so Aelle ended up dying before it was over but Bjorn didn't care, this was purely for revenge.

Well to be fair Jarl borg was an experienced warrior who was In a lot of battles and probably suffered a few severe injuries in his life so his pain tolerance was much higher.

In the extended cut of this episode ecbert did in fact say I love you to aethelwulf, but he said it in an unclear way where you can't tell if he meant it or if he was just manipulating him.

@@bryan23fco Nah he says it again in 4x20 before the Vikings show up, but he does say it as a manipulation tactic in the 4x18 extended. The one in 4x20 is a goodbye so it seems more genuine because Ecbert knows he won't see him again.

@@zurko1108 the old boar suffered (ragnar dying) so the piggies grunted (the sons, coming for revenge). the other side is the piggies grunted (the sons again, and bjorn literally as he blood eagled) when they hear how the old boar suffered (aella dying gruesumely). thats why the quote is repeated as aellas hanging

@@sku242 The sons did not hear how Aella suffered. They were the ones who made him suffer. The reason the quote was repeated was because that is how the little piggies grunted by killing Aella. There is no double meaning.

The 4 kingdoms you're referring to are Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria. Northumbria is Aela's kingdom which is now weakened, the other 3 kingdoms are owned by Ecbert

Im probably late but the reason for the lack of battle is it was not competitive at all even historically. Thats what makes the great heathen army terrifying. Vikings historically had great success raiding, but very mixed results and many losses in battle with standing armies. However the great heathen army showed up and basically terrorized and demolished any force it came against for 15 years pillaging a large majority of england.

Echbert loves his son but I think Aethelwulf reminds him of his first wife to much. Echbert has either place the blame on himself or Aethelwulf which if it's the latter is totally unjustified.
