The Netflix series, Vikings: Valhalla, features a black actress as an 11th Century noblewoman in Northern Europe. This is part of a trend of Hollywood overlooking historical context in the name of diversity, and refusing to pick its battles.

I am Norwegian and this is about my ancestors. One thing is to put a woman regardless of skin color in the role of Håkon Jarl (Jarl Haakon), since Håkon Jarl has lived in reality (935-995). Using a woman and giving her his name is disrespectful. Besides, it sounds incredibly stupid when a woman is accused as Håkon, since the name means son. In our Saga you can read about many powerful women, but none have the title Jarl. Jarl is a male title. Not only is it historyless and disrespectful, but it is also downright ridiculous. Again, a good example of American contemptuous ignorant arrogance.

I wish rather than trying to force inclusivity into every European-history-based show, Hollywood would create shows that are based on non-European history. Why do non-white characters need to be squeezed into time periods with zero believability, like that’s the only way to create a more diverse film industry. Would it not be better to have a show based on African history and the African Empires? Like in the original Vikings show, the Viking's raids in the Mediterranean were a great way to explore other cultures and societies of the time, compared to the new Valhalla show (where she is basically inconsequential and killed off anyways and her being a black woman did nothing to change the narrative in any signifcant way).
@johnnyskinwalker4095

Exactly. But They won't do that because they want to promote the concept of Equity instead of equality. Which is essentialy "replacement". When they replace a white character, it's essentialy a message.
@lindakarlsson7348

I think the reason for this "extreme" diversity agenda we have seen in popular media in recent years, is that no Hollywood show or Netflix show etc, wants to be accused of not being diverse enough. Context doesn´t matter anymore. This has become political. So they include non-white characters everywhere, even where it doesn´t make sense, like a part of a bucket list. Instead of focusing more on stories taking place in other parts of the world, or in modern multi-cultural societies, where diversity should come naturally. Diversity is great, so why not diversity in story-telling and choice of environment? Why a black Robin Hood? Make a movie about an African hero instead.

As a twice Trumper / Evangelical Christian conservative Asian American, I actually have NO problem with this, provided they don't change the "culture" of the historical person being played and try to inject some "ebony" into them. They should be very English, white (gasp) etc. And provided that they are picked for the role because their acting exquisitely fits those roles. Are minority actors to be FOREVER BANNED from Shakespearian theaters save as slaves or chattel? Banned from taking part on major operas as MAIN characters? Singing opera pieces dressed in full costume?? If historical RACIAL accuracy is the standard in the West, all Blacks, Asians and Hispanics should just give up on any Western period pieces which are VAST. If you think about it, it's quite absurd. I have NO problems with a black Queen Elizabeth, Asian Hamlet, or a Hispanic George Washington.

As someone with vitamin D deficiency I can tell you it makes you feel weak and tired all the time. It’s actually kind of hilarious how blatant they made it that she’s a diversity hire. In the end they were like “OK, we ticked off our box, now fuck off”, and killed her off by having her standing perfectly still with arrows falling all around her until she got killed. Then they quickly killed her diversity hire friend. It was so blatant and disrespectful to everyone involved. @Lvisredalin Hey, I'm not the one saying it. Origin of Anglo-Saxon race by Thomas William Shore chapter 7 called Our Darker forefathers can be found online. There are older books telling you they were black people. Those books are now backed up by dna scientists. So look up Vikings dna read all the articles you can. They are all saying that out of 400 plus burial mounds found throughout Europe, they weren't blonde hair and blue-eyed people but and dark hair people. Dark-haired people are referring to black people just in case you don't know
@Lvisredalin
@Lvisredalin 4 месяца назад
@@tommyjohnson6410 Oh, absolutely! It makes perfect sense that the Vikings, those renowned seafaring warriors of Scandinavia, were actually black. Who could forget Erik the Red, famously named for his fiery red hair, which must have been a total mix-up because red obviously means black in some ancient color wheel we're not privy to. And the Danes, Celts, Picts, and Saxons? Clearly, all the centuries of artistic depictions, sagas, and historical accounts got it wrong. It's fascinating how modern DNA analysis, which initially pointed to a predominantly Northern European ancestry with lighter skin tones, was also mistaken. And yes, those 400-plus burial mounds revealing individuals with dark hair must indeed be misinterpreted as evidence of black heritage rather than the more likely dark-haired Europeans. It's truly enlightening to learn that historical revisionism and selective reading of 19th-century sources, like Thomas William Shore's "Our Darker Forefathers," have unveiled the real truth hidden for millennia. Bravo for bringing this groundbreaking insight to light!
@tommyjohnson6410

@Lvisredalin So red hair makes you white? I'm giving you white sources. Thomas William Shore, Dr. Boyd Dawkins, David MacRitchie, and many others. You are stating the lies that you learned from white supremacists. You have no real sources. Here is an example of white washing. Look up Agnes Dunbar she is the niece of the black king Robert the Bruce. Read her bio and look at the pics. The name Gorm means black, dark, or blue in Irish. The surname Nutt derived from the name Cnute. The surname Nutt means brown skin.

It is absurd... My perfect example is or was the game: "Kingdom Come Deliverance"! It is an historical, very accurate videogame that plays in the medieval age at Bohemia! The structures and buildings are accurate, the work they are doing in the villages, the hierachy and everything. They had historians helping them out to make it THAT accurate, the windmills, the stables every little detail. The first reviews came in and they got attacked, because there was no black or asian people in the game, they called them R*CISTS! In an ACCURATE with historians made GAME! How dumb and stupid this has become is beyond me... I am all in for diversity, but in historic movies, games or series or in FANTASY realms with black elves and dwarves f.e., that is just too much. It does not help to accomplish EQUALITY in reallife, right? That is what matters nothing else, but we are in that situation right now... I think it will get even worse...

I loved that game! I hear people often say that the people who critizise wont play the game or watch the movie anyway so why bother? The problem is that the publishers and those who provide the funding most often have a PR image they dont want to tarnish. Therefore people who dont matter can enormously empower their minority opinions in order to impose their will onto the masses with their social media presence. Its a sad state of affairs. Inclusion and diversity is an abomination if it is only used for tokenism. I find it shocking that especially shows and movies with enough worldbuilding or lore which could very well be the basis for new and exiting characters often resort to just ruin fan favorites or create plot massacres for the sake of virtue signaling.

WRONG. Hollywood doesn’t push it down your throats because they believe in equality and inclusion whatsoever. IS MARKETING. Please, stop the notion, that it is done altruistically, cuz it isn’t . Black storytellers are rising, and they know the power of Black people in how easily we set trends and so on. There’s a cultural component to black people, and lack of black stories makes the audience even more curious, because the overwhelm of yt narratives, is creating a disinterest. So, they’re doing all of this for themselves, and money. Their mission right now is to contain Black freelancers and storytelling companies from growing, because once it’s done, they will most definitely lose a big audience, and they can’t allow it. Lol. "The want to sell inclusion and diversity". Are you mad??? 💀🤦🏾‍♂️. These people only care about one thing, and that’s MONEY. We are a marketing tool, that’s it. Forget about your left and right divisions and political orientation, that’s not what they care about. They’re looking in the future, and acknowledge the risk of competition. An BLACK owned American movie company, has a certified audience in the entirety of Africa, in addition to that, they would surely be commissioned to tell African stories, and African movie makers and storytelling industry itself, would also have a global audience, automatically in the Americas and in Africa. Look at black sands entertainment for instance, they promote even indigenous stories in their company, not as a side story, but they put them under the spotlight, and it will tell these stories as the people want to have it, with no white saviourism. And that’s what they’re trying to prevent, is not about politics, is ECONOMICS. They have to trap our eyes in their contents. So, we really are sorry for the BS. I apologize on behalf of BLACK ppl, but we have our own stories to tell, and we are proud of them. The theatrics here will end eventually. WE DID NOT ASK FOR THIS.

@@Ame_by_verb Inaccuracies in timelines is always going to be an issue in these historical settings. Vikings, the last kingdom and many others suffer from it. The reason is a lot of major events happened many years apart i.e. battles and unification of lands etc but it makes some sense to condense it for entertainment purposes. Also, many writings from Viking sagas and Christian chronicles contradict one another in various ways mainly names and dates. So it does give *some* creative licence. But doing things that make no sense and were historically impossible are easier to catch the eye because its so drastically out of place. Forcing diversity and inclusion for the sake of it achieves nothing. The first images of black men are seen in 1431 in a tapestry called wild men and moors and even this is disputed as raiders in Germany used to cover their bodies in soil to raid at night. Also its not a movie...FYI.

The greatest disrespect you could do to a person is make sure everyone knows they're a diversity hire. The greatest disrespect a person could have for themselves, is to proudly accept such a role and praise the people offering it. When I see a black woman in roles like these it feels like an insult and a joke. Stuff like Bridgerton is one thing, the fantasy is built to include another race in its European setting. But stuff outside of this like casting a black guy, an Irishman or Mexican woman to play Pang Juan in movie about the Warring States Period. Why do something like that and pretend no one would rightly ask why? Sending the message that all stories must include every race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, etc. or else it's racist is a scary thing to push and an easy cop out from making actual diverse stories and with diverse characters. Normalising POC in major shows or films is now done by making white stories more diverse, but what if we diversify our collection of stories? Why not write about non-European historical figures, places, events and so on? And then blast it on the screen and make them as big as Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Tudors, whatever, you name it! With Tolkien it's rather similar in some ways, since he has based his world on a medieval European setting, with dwarves and elves being inspired by European and Norse myths and folklore, as well as being described as "fair-skinned" (in the case of the elves), and there being no logical or historical reason why a dwarf would be dark-skinned, since they are mostly living underground. So I can understand why fans are taking issue with this as well. But the same fans did also talk about ways they COULD have involved diverse characters in the story, none of which SEEM to have been explored. But I guess we'll see. I agree though insofar as fantasy, most of the time, will allow for a certain flexiblity of interpretation, or at least more than an actual historical setting.

This idea that black people only left Africa by slavery is ridiculous. Now, I'm not for race swapping historical figures. Some tribes of Filipinos photographed just 100 years ago had black skin, asiatic eyes and kinky hair. Much like Australian aboriginals, which are a great example of migration. Some royal heraldry even suggests there may have been black kings in Europe as far as Germany prior to the Roman empire. I recently finished Vikings and was so immersed into the history of the characters and events that I became of fan of learning another culture other than my own. So going into Valhalla I was excited. But even as a black person, once I saw that casting even I rolled my eyes at the blatant diversity hire that was just checking off another box. It’s clear they only have every other intention other than as being historically accurate with a slight freedom of storytelling like they did the original show. These are real people and real events, not a fantasy narrative. The point of the show is a historical one, not just a drama. There’s plenty of interesting black women in history of whose story the can tell that actually existed. But seeing this, totally killed the excitement for me because it’s just so stupid. Honestly so, so stupid and even offensive. I’d be pissed if they purposely miscasted my ancestors to make some Hollywood goody points. Seriously a black women as a Jarl in Scandinavia in the 11th century? HOW CAN ANYONE IN THAT WRITERS ROOM THINK THAT IS REMOTELY A GOOD IDEA???? Let’s do a Ghandi biopic and cast Awkafina at this point. Lol so ridiculous.

I agree with you, I did enjoy the Vikings series, I see two camp I a lot of people calling the series historical accurate and the other not accurate. The team behind both shows never thought historic accuracy was important, they wanted to tell a story with the same bold take as the Viking sagas which I that case I think is pretty awesome I loved the original Vikings. While I won’t be watching Vikings Valhalla I hope people enjoy it if that’s there thing. Sad reality of Hollywood and tv today is that the stories get ruined by trying to include a group and alienates another.

It seems like it's essentialy a must, almost a law in every TV shows and movies now, they have to be diverse people placed in important places in those stories. Same thing is happening with the new Game of Thrones show "House of the Dragon". Where Valyrians who are supposed to be white skin and platinum hair have a black guy as Lord of one of their biggest houses. Which makes little sense as his clan must have mingled with Targaryens and all of them are white with platimum hair. It's as if you would have a World War 2 movie and one of the Nazies was black. It has reached this level of stupidity now.

I do love the actress and I think she did a good job with what she was given, but I couldn't stop thinking ..why? I wonder if the same thing would have crossed her mind while filming. It was the same with the black greek pantheon and black Achilles-Patroclus in Troy: Fall of a City, or black Anne Boleyn. Why?? Is this the best Hollywood can do? It's about as jarring as a period drama about the kingdom of Kush led by a Japanese actor or a Polynesian Shogun in the Edo period. Want to honor diversity?
