There are a couple errors with the map that Knowledgia used to show the British Empire at 1:47: 1. The British didn't rule all of Cameroon, they only ruled what is now the Northwest and Southwest Region of the country (or the unrecognized breakaway state of Ambazonia) while the Northern Cameroons joined Nigeria. The rest of Cameroon was French. However from 1884 to 1916, Cameroon was called Kamerun and it was German. 2. It doesn't show British Honduras, what is now Belize. This colony lasted from 1783 to 1981. 3. It doesn't show British Ceylon, what is now Sri Lanka. This colony lasted from 1796 to 1948, though they didn't rule the entire island until 1817. 4. Doesn't show Jamaica. Yes their Caribbean colonies were small, but you can still see Jamaica on this map and it should be red. The colony lasted from 1655 to 1962. 5. They didn't rule over all of Somalia. The only part that was colonized by them was British Somaliland in the northern half (or now just the de facto Republic of Somaliland). They occupied the rest of Somalia during WWII to end Italian control, and it then became an UN Trust Territory until 1960. 6. They didn't rule all of Yemen. Just Aden (which became the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen). What would become Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) was the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen 7. The Falklands aren't red either 8. Fiji isn't red

"This is something that children learn in schools and colleges, and today you are here teaching us this for free, so it is a big deal for us". It is easy for us to forget how privileged we are to have access to the internet essentially whenever we like, and to be able to learn these things freely and casually, even if it comes with the struggle of having to sort trustworthy sources from untrustworthy sources by our own judgement. If I wanted to learn the history of the British empire, or about the creation and significance of the printing press or so on, I can do so simply be looking for it and spending a few hours of my time and I would think nothing of it. But for these men, such a thing is truly extraordinary. We shouldn't take it for granted.

I am British and have to say that building empires by invading another land by any means, be it military conquest or under the pretence of trade, should be condemned to history, and should be taught not as a means of glorifying a nation, but as a warning of how greed leads to oppression and resentment and ultimately war. The fact is that power corrupts human beings, and an excess of power leads to corruption in excess. We see this in so many countries throughout history. In my view it is better to build alliances, friendships, trade deals, cultural awareness and respect between people from different lands so that everyone has the same opportunities to improve their lives. Another thing to remember is that the wealth of the British Empire reached only a minority of British people. The vast majority of British people were poor, working 6 or 7 days per week in terrible conditions and living 2 or more families in slum housing during the time of the empire. The common person in Britain suffered at the hands of the same wealthy people who were directing the growth of the Empire.

For balance The British empire was also instrumental in stamping out the slave trade. All other civilisations viewed slavery as a given part of life. Africans, for example, were still being slaved in middle Eastern countries right up until the early 19 hundreds. Sadly, African slaves in the middle East were also castrated, hence why we don't have "African Arabians", as we have African Americans. Despite the fact that Islamic countries, against Muslim laws, slaved off more Africans than the Europeans & Americans. Formerly slaved people were given full citizenship. For balance, we must recognise that this was the unique occurrence. Not the slavery itself.
@sherlocksmuuug6692
@sherlocksmuuug6692 2 года назад
Not that the British government did that solely out of the goodness of their hearts. First of, the economic importance of slavery had already declined when they finally decided to get rid of it. Secondly, increasingly frequent slave revolts in the caribbean had started to make keeping the slaves subjucated more costly than the profits their unfree labour would generate. Thirdly, "Fighting slavery" now became a convenient casus beli to invade and colonize nations that engaged heavily in the slave trade (such as the Ashanti Empire). Polities that had only been able to become so large because the British (in combination with the Arab slave trade, but on the West coast it was mostly the Brits) had been effectively funding them as their main buyer of slaves. There were many brave British abolitionists who sincerely fought slavery and their efforts should be recognized, the collective British government at the time not so much. It's also incorrect to say that "all other civilizations viewed slavery as a given part of life". That's just not true. TLDR: Abolishing the slave trade rather early on was good, the motives not so much. And that is not me going out of my way bashing the British in particular, basically every major polity during that time had very selfish motivations even for the good things they did. History just shouldn't be sanitized, that's doing a disservice to all our past.

If a country as small and weak as America could fight and win freedom from the British, it begs the question why others did not do the same. History may show that not only did Britain fight for the fair treatment of many of the places where they did trade. Those nations benefitted enormously from the British in other ways where they may not have had kind rulers of their own. Many Africans were freed from slavery ...from being bought and sold...by the blood sweat and tears of the British. Many institutions were left behind by the British when they were finally driven out...how much of that would have been there without their presence? That the British were colonizers and oft times brutal, it should be balanced against what was there before their arrival. Much of Africa once colonized and ruled by Europeans, has sunk into a corrupt form of dictatorship with slavery again re-emerging. History is not simple. People are not simple. Large populations have every form of good and evil people within, many without the restraints of morality, ethics and religion. Communist countries have the worst reputation for the treatment of people while promising the good...They have no belief in God and will not allow that belief. China now has millions of Uigers who are muslim in concentration camps under horrific conditions. History is like driving backwards at 40mph while looking in the rearview mirror...very tricky and dangerous.

The "taxation without representation" myth was actually based on taxes the British levied to PROTECT the colonies from incursions by the Spanish and French. They were actually paying for their own defense. Was Britain supposed to protect them for free? Now the US is the current empire interfering everywhere and not always at the wish of or for the benefit of the places they have interfered. @@susieq9801 I think that "taxation without representation" as a myth is probably going too far. As many rallying cries, it was used, but was it the only reason for revolt? A long way from it. Monarchy is a dictatorship by another name. Could be benign, could be horrific. The more removed the authority/power from the people, the more likely the revolt. Not to imply that pure democracy should rule...it has it's own problems. The point is that there is a tipping point where those in power are so removed from the people being governed that they cannot justify their decisions or serve the people well enough to prevent a revolt. There is virtue in subsidiarity and solidarity is hard to maintain at a distance.

The poor slobs at the bottom suffer in every system because power corrupts. As an Iraqi saying goes: "If two fish fight in the Tigris, the British are behind it" I mean they did divide the Middle East with the French without caring for the people too. It wasn't just the Indian subcontinent they did that. and if colonization of India wasn't enough, can't forget about the atrocious border between India and what is now Bangladesh that they left behind. Basically, picture the India-Bangladesh border, and now picture it as if it was a connect-the-dot drawing....that was the result. There was enclaves (a part of country inside another country) everywhere, and it was so bad it had the world's only third-order enclave...a piece of India inside of a piece of Bangladesh inside of a piece of India inside Bangladesh. There are two sides to every story. Sure some of the things we did were not good at the time, but you are seeing the world from a modern perspective, and not the reality of that age. India at the time was in a constant war between Muslims and Hindus, and other sects. Britain brought an end to that squabbling. I'll give you an example of the British and Indian logic at the time... an Englishman called Sir Charles Napier went to India, and he observed a practice called Suti (widow burning), when he asked the hindu chief why is it they burn their women, for this practice is evil... the Hindu priest said "this is our custom and you should respect it, that we burn the widows of rich men". Sir Charles then replied "if this is your custom and I am to respect it, then I shall follow up with my custom, for it is custom in England to hang men who kill women, so if you continue with your custom of Suti, then I shall proceed with mine". Yes it is true we did evil things, but we also did many great things for India too. We built the roads and the buildings, we brought trade and we brought medicine, we brought trains and showed the people how to farm their land properly and how to rejuvenate it, how to better preserve water supplies and how to survive the monsoon season's destruction, how to handle wildfires. On top of that, we brought democracy and laws. In every empire throughout history, there is bad deeds done, but the British unlike every empire before them, dd more good than bad. There is a an English saying that states, to tame a horse one must use both the carrot and the stick.

No nation is selfless, we're men not angels. A wasp nest will eat everything it can around it, it does not care about the corn on the field it inhabits, it eats the pests to help its nest and feed itself. But by doing so, it removes just enough of the grasshoppers around the field, and so they cannot become a swarm of locusts. Therefore this helps the corn, and therefore the farmer. It is also worth noting that the partition of India was done at indias request, and that the caste system has nothing to do with british colonialism. Why is it never mentioned that MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WERE KILLED in the countries that little Britain invaded-? Britains comeuppance time is long overdue and it may be starting to happen with Scotland and N Ireland preparing to break away from the so-called union and a deeply divided people over Brexit. England and (Wales for now) will be left as a little pariah country. Putin and his gang wrongfully invaded one country, Ukraine, KILLING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE and everyone in the 'free' world is against his invasion, killings and destruction.

When you now onto it. You should teach them about the East India Company in more detail. EIC is such important historically. And since they are Indian too, they should learn about it. I'm curtain students - in India - learn about that in school. But these guys haven't been given that opportunity, to learn about such an important part of Indias collective historical heritage. Which I think is unfortunate.. as you can see.. It's like I - an Norwegian - didn't know about vikings. They are so knowledge hungry, and everything stays almost like a photographic memory. It's insane how good memory they got! Please show them more Indian history. I would love to learn about that too.

Yes this video give a good condensed perspective of the east Indian company which back in the early 70s before he graduate from high school they didn’t really get into it they didn’t show the comprehensiveness of what Britain had done so I learned something from this Unfortunately when I was going to school pre-high school the teachers were also the history teachers were also the guys that did the coaching for the football team and they didn’t teach history very well….

8:08 Some of you may wonder why the right side of the painting is blanck. That is actualy because when the painter asked the politicians that were about to conclude the peace treaty to pose, the British politicians were so embarrassed and angry of their defeat, they refused to pose. And so, the artist couldn't paint them.

The British army was always very small. It had to be because Britain is a small island nation and so they decided to put their money into their navy. At the time of Dunkirk the British army in Europe was just 220,000. The French army was three million and so was the German. Britain ruled much of the world because they were the most advanced people on earth.
@ayodejiolowokere1076
@ayodejiolowokere1076 2 года назад
Because after the Napoleonic Wars most of Europe was devastated and their navies destroyed. Same reason America took over after WW2 and the Arabs after the Byzantine Persian Wars. Not exactly sure how they were more advanced barring the brief spell of the Industrial Revolution.

the roman empire at its height was no stronger than the other empires in its own time, the Han empire and Parthian empire both were extremely strong empires at the same exact time as the romans, the only thing the roman empire can flaunt is the sheer amount of time it lasted as a civilization, which in itself turned into western society.
