It would be interesting to explain to them why the original settlers came to be known as Indians by the European explorers.
@remo27
@remo27 2 года назад
Actually, pretty much none of the "Indian" tribes were the original settlers. Our "Indians" displaced a first wave or indigenous peoples thousands of years ago. We know this because of modern genetic science which can trace which part of the world genes came from and thereby trace human movements.
@remo27
@remo27 2 года назад
Do I not count as 'indigenous' because my first ancestors arrived here in 1631? This works both ways. Fact is very few tribes or genetic groups alive today were truly the first to be anywhere. So what?

The holocaust against the American natives is kinda left out of this video. It is estimated that between 40 and 50 million people lived in this Western hemisphere before 1490; that is, before European settlement began. By 1900, the Indigenous population had reached its lowest point of about 237,000 people.

@alahiri2002
@alahiri2002 2 года назад
In truth, a lot has been left out. Also, while settlers were completely intolerant and discriminatory toward the indigenous population, it is historically inaccurate and frankly disrespectful to compare it to the Holocaust. The Holocaust was 100% systemically institutionalized injustice. There are much smaller examples of the US doing similar things (the Trail of Tears, for one), but the reason behind the native decline in population was primarily due to disease. Why do you think they bothered shipping Africans across a massive ocean for slavery when there were millions of natives who could provide the same labor? Because they couldn’t. Africans, Asians and Europeans had been in contact for centuries and millennia, so Africans had built up immunity to common European diseases. The indigenous population had none of this. The Europeans tried to bring Natives back to Europe to show them to Europeans, but they almost always all died on the journey. A European could have a face to face conversation with a native, carry on with life, and find out they died of some illness in a few days. This isn’t a problem for the current descendants of the indigenous anymore for the same reason it wasn’t for Africans, but it’s the primary reason for that decline in population.

@maja1157
@maja1157 2 года назад
@@alahiri2002 Way to go. Changing the topic for your joy of whataboutism. The etymology of a term is not its meaning. The word refers to any destruction or slaughter on a mass scale. There was no historical comparison in mind. Also: that genocide was, of course, purposefully. The Europeans wanted the land and power. So they killed and chased and raped and burned and starved the indigenous people to death. From tens of millions to less than 300 thousand. Collective intend to wipe out a people does not require a political direction to be collective intend to wipe out a people. Cultural direction works just fine.

Come for the USA history...but first, Villagers React to a Raid Shadow Legends ad. -I am glad that Babu recognized parallels between the US fight for independence and the Indian fight for independence. In the family of countries, India and America are step-brothers, and Britain is our father (though adopted in India's case). -Yes the USA has been involved in many wars in our short history. This is mostly due to our geographic isolation. Only Canada and Mexico share a land border with the USA and neither country has the interest, or the ability, to maintain and invasion of the United States. As a consequence, America typically fights wars in other places and so our home does not suffer much damage as a result of war. This is one key reason why Americans tend to be less averse to entering a war because we know that it is unlikely to cause damage at home. That being said he are tired after Iraq and Afghanistan so unless someone attacks a NATO country or China invades Taiwan, we are not interested in entering a war at the moment. -The United States of America is a relatively young country, I can see why Babu would be surprised by that.
@enderoctanus
@enderoctanus 2 года назад
I think that honestly, America has been involved in relatively few conflicts (depending on how you define it anyway, is giving one guy a gun in Africa the same as sending troops?) compared to Old World countries within a similar timeframe. I think we forget just how common wars were. Historically speaking, peace was more of an abnormality than war was. However, with America, several conflicts are much more modern and people tend to be much more focused upon that, and more critical.

To be fair, it kind of is like that right now. You have America and then whatever the rest of the world is up to. America is just that powerful. That will naturally change over time, but it would be sort of like expecting people to stop focusing so much on Rome during its peak. Sure, other stuff was going on, too, even other empires, but that was the happening place, at its zenith. As it dies down, focus shifts elsewhere too. But until then, America is the most culturally important place in the (first) world.

This is a very American-centric version of history. It wasn’t like Indian history at all because the people living in the colonies weren’t native either and were part of the invasion and oppression of the Native Americans. The tax imposed was minuscule, and the revolt was more of an excuse to break away and start profiting from the vast amounts of land that were “available” - as the British had passed a law that any land acquisition had to be properly negotiated with the native tribes. The colonists didn’t like this. Independence from the British Empire simply meant they could do as they pleased and ride roughshod over the Native Americans. Also, the US then hypocritically went on to do exactly as the British, French, and Spanish had done to the natives and stole part of Mexico to expand their own “empire”; therefore, trying to defend the War of Independence as a point of principle definitely does not stand up.
@Riegawa
@Riegawa 2 года назад
It was principle though, The colonists were Englishmen who wanted to be taxed in accordance to English legal traditions.The idea of being able to expand westward may have helped persuade some to join the revolution, however, the revolution its self was brought upon the ideas of the rights of the governed vs the rights of the governing. Whatever expansion that happened after is largely irrelevant to the actual cause of the revolution. Also, the early American empire is not hypocritical to principle because the revolution was about English men breaking away from the English state and forming a new state, that is, state was no longer in the best interest of its citizens. The whole world was still constantly waging wars of conquests against each other and taking land by force was not yet seen as some form of shameful act yet and so the Americans were just as ready to fight to expand as they were to fight to defend against other would be expansionists. The natives they subjugated were not US citizens, just as the Spaniards subjugated by the French were not citizens to France.

Always love there guys' reactions. So wise. Sad this video barely mentions Native Americans, for they were there first, if I'm not wrong, and for they were first called "Indians" because C. Columbus thought he'd reached India in the first place.
@enderoctanus
@enderoctanus 2 года назад
Simply put, Native American history is mostly dead. It was never well researched and Natives tended to refuse to share their history outside their tribes. What they would share wasn't historical, it was allegorical and spiritual. You wouldn't get anything like, "Our tribe was formed 500 years ago at such and such place, for these reasons." It would be more along the lines of some spirit creature created them an eternity ago at the same time it created the world. Unhelpful for actually knowing what happened. So in short: History was never something Native Americans considered to, honestly, keep track of, and so it died with each generation. If you take the history away, you basically only have what the video covered: How you think they got there and when, the culture groups, the fact that they were often in conflict with settlers, the wars, and maybe the fact that they all either integrated with the settlers, moved to their reservations, or died off. Mostly that latter one. There just isn't much to say that can also be reasonably fit into a video that's skin-deep. The video doesn't explain the culture of the Americans, Spanish, British, French, or other settlers, for instance, so it isn't just that the video is being biased, it skimped on everyone.

@@JDTHEONEANDONLYORIGINAL No he thought it was India because he was trying to sail to India. He didn't think it was India just because he met brown people. It was the other way around. He decided he had found India because he was looking for India, so when he found natives, he decided they must be Indians (because this must be India). Do yourself a favor and quit racializing history, that's a very modern mindset.

It's funny how Babu compares it to India. Well I suppose they are taught that Britain is the enemy and the US is great. But that's very much the populist history of the US and not the academic history. The 'revolution' split colonists, it wasn't simply US v UK. And the colonists wanted to take more Indian land (which they did in the 19th century) and it was actually Britain that carried out actions v slavery first with the movement starting by the end of the 18th century. In the US some still lived a slave life into the 20th century. And anti-discrimination laws were only passed in the 60s. All of these things relate more to US history than to people who never left Britain. The free land was a major draw for people and meant more people had freedom (but at the expense of Indians) and led to depopulation in areas of Europe.
@penname5766
@penname5766 2 года назад
Yep exactly. The Americans learn such a narrow version of events. With some of the comments here, anyone would think THEY were the natives fighting for THEIR land 😂 😂 😂 After winning their independence, they were able to acquire the land from the native Americans without fair negotiation (as per the law passed by the British) and THEN steal more off the native Mexicans. It’s hilarious that they all agree with Babu’s paralleling it to Indian history. With all due respect to Babu, he doesn’t know anything about the context.

@@penname5766 It's the 250 years of the marketing of America globally. An earlier video on facts or stereotypes about countries had one for the US as representing freedom. That's a cliche that very largely comes from Americans describing the US, it's what they are taught. And of course part of that is transferring slavery and the taking of Indian land onto British people. No matter that these things actually defined American society, not British society. America didn't just start after the 'revolution', it started well before that. They had plenty of independence, had their own laws and representatives. They didn't like paying taxes, well I suppose nobody does, but they really had quite a cushy life in the colonies, people in Britain were taxed far more. And after the war they got way higher taxes from their new government.

But the people who founded the United States WERE the British colonisers, so this is nonsense. And to compare yourselves to oppressed people when you WERE the oppressors, and responsible for the genocide of the natives is disingenuous. It’s not a judgement, but to think this parallels the experiences of other indigenous peoples who were colonised by the British - or French, or Dutch, or Spanish, or Portuguese etc (as if Britain was the only one) is delusional.
