The animals that were fighting, kissing/licking, and looking behind the mirror (like the lions) didn't know that they were looking at a reflection. They thought there was another animal there. Studies have shown that animal species such as whales/dolphins, elephants, and some primates will actually understand that the mirror is a reflection. This shows that these animals have self-awareness and understand the concept of "I am an individual." For most of human history, people thought that only humans were self-aware. It's fascinating to see how self-aware animals react.

PS: I also wanted to note: usually, spiders will lift their front legs and show off their fangs as an intimidating display and warning against foes, saying, “Back off! Or I will bite you!” That spider probably thought it saw another spider.
@GermanAnimeStriker
@GermanAnimeStriker 3 года назад
Not completely true with jumping spiders which were seen in that video. They mostly lift their legs up like that to perform a dance to the other spider, maybe to show of how badass and dominant they are as u said or as a pairing reason. The male jumping spider has to dance for the female with the front legs up to show of what a beatiful spider it is and to be worth of mating with female spider. They play "drums" with their own web to check if prey is in it at in generall jumping spiders are the only spiders which are naturally optical driven. With other spiders this video wouldnt make much sense cause all the other spiders are blind as fuck and only sense vibrations.

The jumping spider (family Salticidae) is considered one of the most intelligent (and cuttest) arachnids. Her vision sometimes can be compared to a cat's, they have amazing comprehension of tridimensional spaces and there's even studies about domestication. I love jumping spiders! I used to have one but she passed from old age 8 months ago ): the most curious thing in the world, they stare at camera lenses because they think it's an eye looking at them, then they tilt their tiny cephalothorax like the famous German Shepard head tilt 😍it's really cute Edit: for example did you see it dancing to the mirror? It was really horny and wanted to mate with the reflection 😅 he gave that fella blue balls

Most people think that these experiments prove that most animals don't have self-awareness. Some may not, sure, but it's more often that they understand that it's their reflection, they're more interested in the object. In a "What is this illusion" kind of way, they're attacking the object that behaves in a strange way to see how it would react. Animals who regularly interract with mirrors understand this more.
