From Fields to Future: Villagers Experience RoboCop (1987) | Old Meets New Movie Night!

Step into the quaint charm of rural life as villagers gather for a cinematic adventure like never before! In this unique village gathering, residents are about to embark on a journey into the futuristic world of "RoboCop" (1987), a classic sci-fi masterpiece. Picture this: the humble village square transformed into an outdoor movie theater, the flickering light of the screen casting a warm glow on the faces of eager onlookers.
For these villagers, the concept of a cyborg law enforcement officer is as foreign as the distant galaxies they gaze upon during their quiet nights. As the opening credits roll and the iconic score begins, a hush falls over the makeshift audience. The atmosphere is charged with a blend of anticipation and curiosity, and you can almost feel the collective excitement in the air.
As the narrative unfolds, watch the villagers navigate the gritty streets of Detroit alongside Alex Murphy, a cop turned into a cybernetic crime-fighting machine. Witness their reactions to the cutting-edge special effects of the 1980s, marveling at the contrast between their everyday lives and the dystopian future depicted on screen. How do they relate to the themes of justice, corruption, and the power of technology?
The shared experience of discovering "RoboCop" together creates a communal bond, as gasps, laughter, and discussions punctuate the night. Imagine the villagers' faces lighting up with amazement during the iconic ED-209 sequence or the emotional resonance of RoboCop's struggle with his humanity. It's not just a movie night; it's a cultural exchange, bridging the gap between the simplicity of village life and the complexities of a high-tech urban dystopia.
As the credits roll and the screen fades to black, one can't help but feel a sense of connection and camaraderie among the villagers. The first-time viewing of "RoboCop" becomes more than just a cinematic experience; it's a shared memory etched into the fabric of the village, a night that will be talked about around fires and in fields for years to come.

'87 was a strong year for action flicks: RoboCop, Predator, Lethal Weapon, The Running Man, Project A 2, City on Fire. But '97 was also an exciting one for the genre: Starship Troopers, The Fifth Element, Face/Off, Con Air, Air Force One, Men in Black, Conspiracy Theory, Tomorrow Never Dies.

This movie holds up so well! Because it is a great story. Action, excellent pacing, very dark humor, and great performances by the actors. Ronnie Cox (Dick Jones) is one of my favorite actors. Originally a bluegrass musician, he is known as one of the nicest actors in Hollywood, but was iconic for playing some of the nastiest bad guys ever. Snarling, mean, petty, thoroughly unlikable fellows played by a very nice man, lol. Still alive too.

Robocop is such a good movie! I was one of the most popular of the genre known as "CyberPunk", in which a dystopian future has soul-less corporations replacing human parts with robot parts, and then effectively owning the person. Many other such films, such as Bladerunner, are also considered icon movies of the 80's.
@DinkMcStinky

They should see Blade Runner as well, I think it's the first type of Cyberpunk film if I remember correctly. The world shown in that is so unique and awesome 💯 Also Harrison Ford is brilliant

It was something fairly new for the 80's too, besides Blade runner, but it stood out in the market for it's Ultra Violence, one of the first mainstream movies to feature that level of graphic violence, and It's fucking beautiful. This will always be a superb movie, especially for it's commentary, some a little on the nose, but amazing none the less.

You need to get them to watch his trilogy with Total recall and starship troopers, I'm sure they would love to see them. Total recall is my favourite film of all time and some of the best one liners ever. You make me wish I had 3 hands 😂.

FUN FACT: The medical team you saw trying to save Murphy was actually a real life medical team. The director of RoboCop wanted the scene to look as real and genuine as possible, so he paid an off-duty ER team to come in and treat the character of Murphy like they would have treated a real gunshot victim.
@aurorauplinks
@aurorauplinks 8 месяцев назад
thats why its so deep, it was a good idea, it lets everyone feel the horror of gunshot wounds and makes everyone a bit more cautious about ever wanting to be in a stupid gun fight where the consequences are real.

The scene also borrowed stylistically from Goose's ER scene in Mad Max, and director George Miller had been an ER doctor before beginning his film career.

Their ending thoughts were very interesting. This was purely science fiction back then, but now 35+ years later it's closer to reality with mind controlled robotics and advanced prosthetics. The question is more now about ethics, rather can we achieve it technically. Paraphrasing Jurassic Park's Dr. Ian Malcolm here: Just because we could do not mean we should.

I think this is a great "robot" film for anybody. (some gory bits that may upset children, but even those are played for laughs.) It is an easy to follow "robot" story, about a cyborg man looking for his humanity. One thing that may be difficult to follow is how it's a parody of the media and corporations. The film has a lot of TV segments that show how people live in this imagined futurte; we see doctors advertising heart transplants, news programs talking about tragedies with fake smiles, a children's board game about nuclear war, and everybody addicted to a quiz show "I'd buy that for a dollar!" that makes no sense. It's commentary on how advertising and violence on TV can desensitize people, that is still true today. (You may have experienced it first hand, as you have also reviewed many American action films on this channel. xD)

Fortunately, there was some very strong, good humanity remaining in Murphy as Robocop, unlike ED-209, in which there never was any humanity at all. Yes, perhaps common crime could be eliminated, but we need to be highly wary about the creation of such forceful means to fight it. What if it ends up being the less common, much more powerful bad guys (the corporate Dick Joneses in suits and ties, with offices in tall towers, pointing down at the crime on the street to distract attention away from their own) who end up creating and controlling that force? “Who watches the watchmen?” is an utmost important question, and goes unanswered too often. Relying so much on force can also easily remove a lot of the symptoms, but totally fail to address or even recognize the causes.

This was a fun watch! Robocop is one of my favorites from my teenage years and I love watching you guys follow along with this amazing movie. This was before Computer Generated special effects, so that was a real suit that took months to build and required the actor to stay at the exact weight because every part was sculpted to fit his body. You don't see his face in the holster shots because that's a puppet leg and arm putting the gun away. The big robot, ED-209 was brought to life through stop motion animation, where a scale model is hand animated and filmed at 24 frames per second. They then cut out or composite the animation footage over the movie footage, add sound effects, and you've got a crazy killer robot! Nowadays the robots are all done in computer and stop-motion is more a niche for family movies by companies like Aardman Animation and Lakia Studios. You should check out Paranorman or The Nightmare Before Christmas for some of the best examples of that style of animation.

I think the theme of the film is actually that technology cannot eliminate crime because it doesn't remove corruption from the hearts of men. As we see, there are also wicked people who have access to controlling the technology for their own ends. Murphy is declared dead so that he may be enslaved, his body and his mind are chained to the machine. When he removes his damaged mask, he is breaking the chains around his humanity even if he cannot take back what he has lost.

Robocop is such a good movie. Connecting this to your Batman reactions I feel like Robocop pulled heavily from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns in terms of the heavy focus on satire and news reports along with a near future setting. Also love how they got Peter Well the actor who played Robocop to do voice of Batman in the Animated Dark Knight Returns movie. Highly recommend Dredd (2012) as well a movie based around Judge Dredd who heavily inspired the character of Robocop. Can't recall if you they've reacted to Dredd but its a really solid film that overlooked when it released relating to lack of promotion and just did not reach a larger audience beyond Dredd fans. It's a cult classic that's gotten alot of love sense it hit DVD and Blu-Ray and has just increased in people who love the film with streaming etc.
@Surprise_Inspection
@Surprise_Inspection 8 месяцев назад
Wow, just wow. 1st of all, the idea that corporations rule over us, and that politicians are just corporate suits in public office, is everywhere, and did not originate with frank Miller. He just made it the most obvious. (He knew that the general public wouldn't be smart enough to get the message otherwise) 2nd, you recommended the remake of judge dredd, over the originals. You probably think this is the golden age of entertainment and movies have never been made with more love and attention, than right now.

You can see how these south asian village guys can't get the perspective in the movie. That perspective reflects the 70's (when the script was written) and 80's, with things like the mid 70s oil crisis still fresh along with inflation that persisted into the early 80's, economic turmoil in America during the 70s, silly TV from the 70s, and the collapse of Detroit, which went from the wealthiest, most technologically advanced city in the world in 1960 to a depopulated, crime-ridden septic pit in the 70s. These guys wouldn't know anything about that, so they're inevitably confused.
