They weren't spoiled and damaged by social media where everyone needs to argue and hold their ground no matter the cost/truth and aren't arrogant. Curiosity and ability to be open minded is a sign of mainly wisdom but also at least a bit of intelligence. It's saddening since these people do seem to be smart. One of those unfortunate people could be an absolute genius or the smartest person on Earth but never develop their potential because of the place they were born into. The main thing is survival for some of them and I hope it's going well. (Most of Africa and states with poverty included). And yeah, changing your life for the better after acquiring accurate, correct information is awesome. That's why schools should be everywhere and the way we teach changed for the better. I still haven't given up on humanity yet. But man is it sometimes close.

@luxinvictus9018
@luxinvictus9018 Год назад
I think it suddenly makes you realise just how vast..and empty it is. To be fair, I still feel the same when I think about the Earth alone. Even now, and especially with the internet, people don't fully appreciate just how...BIG everything is. Recently I was hearing a Joe Rogan podcast where the guy was talking about how he saw a anaconda in an uncharted rainforest in Brazil, which he felt was at least 3 feet wide and 20 feet long. Literally a dragon, but it was late night and it slipped into a a deep, underwater 'forest'. How the forest literally has a canopy which as large and complex like a forest itself, and the swamps literally have a whole 3rd forest themselves, where the snakes live. Most of it is uncharted and unrecorded. Forget the Universe, the idea of 'uncharted' canopies itself gives me the chills, to say nothing of underwater forests with literal ancient 'dragons'.

Same with my Grandmother. I have to remind her, "cost Nana." I wish there was a nanobot that could fix her arthritis or an Android that can help her cut her food. We'll get there, but now we are getting so advanced, but the cost of those advancements are ludacrous. Commercially, we won't see cures for deaseases 10 years. Unfortunately these belief systems tend to be significantly less flexible in terms of social systems with caste systems and gender roles that are still largely in place today. While Western theology is more opposed to new scientific information, it’s also partially responsible for leading to some major social reforms such as abolitionism and civil rights.

@@jacobb5484 Yeah don't go pinning the caste system on the religion, cuz not one religious text in Hinduism talks about the caste system as we know it today. The true "varna", which I guess you can call caste system, had nothing to do with one's birth and were more of a classification of duty. One who protects his land is a Kshatriya, one who seeks knowledge, whether scientific, spiritual or otherwise and act upon it were Brahmins, etc. and nowhere is it stated that the son of a man from the "lower caste" can't be a member of the "upper caste" Women also were held with great respect. If a woman asked a Kshatriya for a child, it was his duty to give her one whether he was married to her or not. Men used to compete for a woman's hand in marriage and in the end, it was the woman's choice, and there were female rulers like Rani Lakshmi Bai in recent history. What you see now is a bastardised version of the religion and just like how you can't pin terrorism on Islam, you can't pin any of these on Hinduism either

A cosmic existential crisis is a large part of what both put me in *and* pulled me out of my nihilism-fueled depression. Now, my philosophical view of life and my place in it is still rooted in nihilism, but I found that the very same knowledge (of being so incredibly insignificant meant that nothing I'd ever do in life would ever amount to anything meaningful--and therefore not worthwhile) that put me in the tailspin of depression... pulled me out of it. It was liberating to know that any faults, inconsistencies, or horrible mistakes that I'd ever have or make could never really... do anything. It didn't matter if I became a grand architect of human advancement or a schlub living on a boat for the rest of my life. What that allowed me to realize was that... the only meaning that can ever truly be derived from our pure insignificance... is not from ourselves but from one another. We are, as most things are on our pale blue dot, social creatures, and making others happy makes us happy. Our place in this world is to fill the voids in others' hearts, and theirs' to fill ours; and some days I wonder if this isn't just the mad and inane ramblings of some deranged idiot like myself, but rather a self-evident truth... Why else would we hold our pets dear and close to our hearts and spoil them rotten? We don't simply *allow* them to live, but rather *care* for them. We don't *tolerate* people, but rather fall in love with them. We bond with others irrespective of species, and that--I'd say--is our lot in life.

Random religious people from India: "Wow, if the Universe is so big and old, God must be even bigger and more powerful than I thought!" I might be an atheist, but I've always thought it was a shame how easily the so-called devoted around me had their faith shaken. If your first response to learning new information is to assume it must make your God lesser, then how fragile exactly is your belief and trust in him? I think, and I should emphasize that this is only my opinion, the Abrahamic religions are very anthropocentric. For them humans are pretty much the only thing that matters or at least the most important thing. Following that reasoning Earth should be the center of everything. Facts like these show how insignificant Earth is and thus humans even less. If you believe that you are God's chosen ones and that God created everything in service of you and then suddenly learn that in the larger scale of things we are pretty much nothing they can't accept it. Same reason why they can't accept that we are animals. Something you also see with humanists. Hinduism, like other polytheistic religions, are much less anthropocentric. There isn't just one God who looks like us and created everything for us but many gods in many forms for many things and aspects. They have much less problems with accepting that they might not be the most important, that they are just one part of a greater whole. But again this is just my opinion so might be completely wrong as well.
@Jack-ts1jq
@Jack-ts1jq 3 года назад
@@loddfafnir6111 I can only comment on christianity, but I think that's what is taught in abrahamic religions. I completely agree that christians believe god must only care about them but that is what's said in the bible. God is supposed to have told Adam that humans were made in his image and are meant to look after the world. I think you could take the video in two ways if you were religious: either you see it and think god is huge and therefore he must care about you so so much more than you originally thought or you feel threatened by the sheer size of the universe and believe god could never care about such small humans if the universe was so big and so you reject science. As an atheist who grew up around christians it's always frustrating to hear science refuted so eagerly by people who have no scientific background, just a faith that was forced upon them at a young age. Like you say, religions such as hinduism and buddhism (I know it's not strictly a religion, but I'm not sure how to label it) are far more accepting of a world where they aren't number 1, rather they're just looking to reach peace and good will, which is far less problematic than denying science to fit an outdated world view into a modern world.

I am a Christian who also loves science. True Christians are like these Indians. We see this and think "God is unfathomably powerful." I view the bible and what God tells us in at just as what he thought we needed to know. Maybe there are billions of other sentient alien civilizations out there each with their own unique version of the bible and their own rules of eternity and this is why God made the universe so big (so we can never interact with aliens and all retain our own rules and views of a single God).

I was told lies by my grandfather when I was young that there are infinite universes, 312 billion years old, a story of Balram's father-in-law went to a planet of Brahma and spent few hours and millions of years has passed on earth while earth human civilization itself was so small. Even if they don't understand, they'll go home asking themselves questions about what they've always thought to be true. At its core, that's a scientist. It always surprise me when people think our ancestors were any less intelligent than we are today. They were the same as us (despite different social norms) but didn't have our tech to help them figure it all out. Yet religion still exists...SMH.

@@DeadeyeLefty Yes, religion exists to define LOVE, DIGNITY, HOPE, SALVATION, FAITH, AND THE CREATOR AND HIS CREATION. I am a retired scientist, spent all my life studying the earth, and yet i realize we have only begun to scratch the surface of knowledge about God's Creation. That is where my belief and my awe spring from. These things I mention above cannot be described by science.

@@DeadeyeLefty an interesting exercise i find myself doing as a non-believer... is WHAT WOULD MAKE ME BELIEVE like that? knowing the science and all. I find myself believing in an Architect, designer of forces, coder of laws, life giver more and more..... just using subtractive logic and critical observation there is tooooo much coherencem patterns, systems and logic. But the thing that makes me believe is what it does to me personally the thought that i am the observer and subject and object. What would make YOU believe like that? 1000s of hours learning the nature of conciousness? acid or dmt? Voices in your head? what about directly speaking to a loved one that is decieased? Or just contemplating thought itself..... If you say nothing... nothing would "make you" believe... why?
@DeadeyeLefty
@DeadeyeLefty 2 месяца назад
@@KOSMIKFEADRECORDS No rational person can hold an opinion without testing it periodically and still call their opinion informed, so that's a good exercise for everyone. Personally though, I don't see the need to add a greater power to the equation. There are plenty of natural forces and phenomena we don't understand (yet) so it follows that there are also questions we simply don't yet know enough to ask. If I have "faith", it's in believing that, if we held the sum of all knowledge of all things, we would see that everything follows natural laws and are not based on the whims of a super-consciousness. Nothing is unknowable except that we may not yet have the frame of reference to understand the answers, never mind the language to describe them. We are still in the infancy of our technological development. We can manipulate the splitting of atomic nuclei, but the best use we have for that knowledge...is to boil water. It's ok to just say "I don't know" rather than to try and connect dots that don't necessarily connect.

Also how mapping of the ocean floor has been going around the world. Remember when the plane went down off of Australia and how they were mapping the ocean floor to try and find debris from the plane. Nothing was ever found but the world learned then how much science has been actively mapping all the deepest points of our ocean floor. Also the Titantic and how it was finally found and the story about that would be interesting to them. I think the last survivor of that just passed away last year.
