I wonder if that will be true of ep VII VIII and IX. the first three, and the prequels were made with Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces" in mind, I'm not sure the disney ones were. perhaps.

@@highstimulation2497 I don't really consider those eps Star Wars. It would be interesting to see if they reacted with confusion and disappointment, but at the same time it would be a bit cruel to subject them to those films just for that purpose. @@highstimulation2497 They each do as well, TFA (VII) especially does as its story beats Act I being similar to ANH with both Rey and Finn's call to adventure and so on, ACT 2 story beats within the monomyth take after those within ESB even quoting it directly in a couple spots, and ACT 3 its story beats ending the movie similarly to RotJ--the big final battle on two fronts the ground forces having to deal a blow so starfighters can strike at the heart of the big planet killer; all the while a confrontation between Force adepts was going on. Each of the story beats in all three acts follow Joseph Campbell's monomyth (which is what Campbell describes within Hero with a Thousand Faces). However one may feel about TFA it was set up as an homage to the OT while introducing the new cast of characters spearheading the latest trilogy, and it utterly adhered to the story beats of the monomyth. Where the sequel trilogy not necessarily diverges but Rian Johnson thought he was clever enough to try to subvert the monomyth that Star Wars is enormously based on yet could simultaneously embrace the monomyth. that's when things get fv

In all fairness, some people would argue the movie _is_ meant to be hyper-analyzed, but that's a good thing! George Lucas has proven in interviews that he's a big fan of metaphor and other literary elements like that, which he tries to communicate through things like camera angles, lighting, etc. Some people analyze out of love for the film and all the thought put into the small things, that's how they enjoy movies.

Interesting. When the Phantom Menace came out there were many who were less than impressed and felt that Lucas had let the series down. Watching this movie through less cynical eyes one can see that the problem is not so much with the movies, but rather with an audience who are aware of movie tropes and thus were less impressed by them. These three gentlemen's ignorance of such tropes actually made them far more invested in the story to the point that they actually thoroughly enjoyed aspects of the movie, namely Jar Jar Binks, and young Anikan, that were derided by fans at the time and even today. I wish I could forget my cynicism and just enjoy these movies as they were meant to be, instead of analyzing them to death.

I don’t think the tropes were the problem as much as the weak characters and storytelling. Which are things that don’t matter to you when you’re a kid. Or at least you don’t notice that they matter to you. The prequels really come alive if you watch the clone wars tv show though, which does a much better job building characters and fleshing out the story. The worst part of the prequels is that there is actually really interesting deep spiritual and philosophical ideas being talked about that are worth analyzing, but the direction is so bad that there almost invisible in the movies. Once you know what story George was trying to tell you can see it being played out in the movies too though.

You are unbelieveably narcissitic. Secondly, no one said the first movie was perfect. Even Lucas himself said it wasn't. With a budget of just 11 million, which translates to something like 50-60 million today, try making that type of movie today with the same budget. Films like that today cost something like $300 million to $500 million today, especially since all the scenes were painstakingly done by hand. There was no cgi in 1977. Thirdly, the entire story line of the entire originally trilogy is ruined by watching the films in chronological order instead of release order. The only thing I hate about the prequels is people using the word hate. It’s fucking juvenile. Sure, there were lots of things to dislike about this movie, mostly the Gungans, but the pod race, the fight with the Jedis vs Maul and the battle with the droids were amazing. Also the sets, I’m from Sydney and I’m still mind-boggled how they made it, Nabokov and Coruscant were incredible.

I know the internet hates on change. But me as a storyteller myself I love seeing people see prequel’s first because it’s the same story but you get to see what they pick up on and they might miss the Easter eggs in the prequels they are already familiar with the world while watching the usually better originals. Might make Vaders end in Episode 6 hit even harder for them because they saw his whole journey since he was a kid.

Chronological order is great because of how it brings the story full circle on both a thematic and narrative level, bringing almost full closure. Release order accomplishes this too with the original six films but I think there's something more satisfying about seeing the torch get passed to the next generation by the time of episode 4.
@lorehammer40k4
@lorehammer40k4 Год назад
The only thing they'd really gain by seeing them in release order is the amazing "No, I am your father" moment, which is absolutely huge, sure, but not really necessary. Knowing that Vader is both Luke and Leia's father before the OT takes the power out of it, but I get the feeling we only feel about it that way is because it was such a huge moment in pop culture and cinema, the context of it's time is very important to our understanding of it. At least they got to see the Duel of the Fates early on though, that'll definitely pique anyone's interest in the series. I'm still watching it and haven't gotten to that part of the movie yet, I can't wait to see how they respond.
@tristanbackup2536
@tristanbackup2536 Год назад
It depends. My then girlfriend never seen Star Wars, she knew of Darth Vader given our pop-culture, by the time of episode 3 ending, she didn't know Anakin is Darth Vader as that was a surprise for her. It can go two ways, people not knowing Anakin is Vader or Luke is Vader's father, chronological or released order, It's made to be viewed either way. She saw all 6 now.

@@andromidius It's also about the cultural background, we grew up with Sci-fi and laser stuff all over the place and it just comes natural to assume it's a laser blade or that the flying things it's actually vehicles traffic.
