Kinda reminds of a game I played a long time ago. You could sprite your own creatures and adjust stats on them, then upload them to the world and have them interact with other players' islands. I forget what it's called, but it had "Goo" somewhere in the title.

Hexed Definitely not. That was a physics-based puzzle-platformer that used digitally drawn art, not sprites.

As far as evolution simulators go, Biogenesis is a pretty cool one to check out. It's old but still pretty interesting to poke around with. Can link up with other players and send creations through portals. Also, it's free.
