I have one of the 1st viltrox 85mm on my a7, and its a tank! i use it for almost 2 years on street photography and its really good for an 85mm. (with the latest software it can do f1.6)
Yes, I saw it had an update to f1.6, that is so cool!! The mkII is awesome too, I'm really loving it! I can't wait till they send me the 35mm, that's going to be awesome 🔥
Just watched your comparison/review video. I have been using Sony 85mm f1.8 and it’s been very reliable. Viltrox is working on the areas where Sony lacks performance and that for much lesser price. Like your 24mm comparison video, this should have been pitted against GM to consider its value. Nonetheless, this is a great video like 24mm and 50mm videos. Thank you for doing some non-scientific no nonsense tests. Don’t know if anyone watched this video till the end… Congratulations Phillip on your new baby boy. Such a cute baby!
Just found your channel and absolutely loving it mate. Thanks for all the laughs and insight into the GoPro 10. Came for GoPro info but staying for the rest of your content. Wicked!
Have been using the Viltrox MkII for a while now with Sony A7 and love it - build quality and image quality are amazing for the price. One thing I'd say I've noticed is colour fringing can get pretty bad in harsh lighting! Also I don't know why but when I use autofocus it always focuses slightly in front and usually only notice when I get to post, ruined a lot of shots because of it unfortunately
I've had it for a few weeks, and I love it too! I haven't noticed any fringing on mine, mind you my Sony had quite a bit when I shot against the sun. My AF is perfect, have you tried manually adjusting it in the Sony menu? I believe there should be an option for that.
I haven’t yet, is there an update that makes this even better?!!?

I am interested in your comment since I also want it for a sony a7, can you share a photo???'' THIS I'd say I've noticed is color fringe can get pretty bad in harsh lighting! gracias
The FE 85MM 1.8 was the first lens I ever purchased. I love that thing so much. The bokeh is beautiful. I've never had an issue with the stabilisation on video on an A7 2, especially on a gimbal. Even handheld I never experienced any issues with it. I think that's the case with many lenses though; ultimately you can achieve most shots by just understanding your movements and having a steady hand. Even compared to the Zeiss Batis, the quality isn't even that different. Great lens and so much fun, especially under low light.
Thanks Johnny! haha, they actually have fantastic balls! I'm so impressed by Viltrox lenses and how they're basically a better version of the Sony ones, I just wish they all had AF/MF switches. I'm testing the 50mm right now, and for $100 extra than the Sony nifty fifty it's a million times better!
HI; First of all, thank you for your good presentation. According to your experience regarding Viltrox lens, I wanted to ask you, is Viltrox suitable for Sony FX3 camera for filming? Thanks
It's an excellent lens! I've been using Viltrox lenses a lot recently and am blown away how good they are, hands down better than the original Sony lenses. Thanks Denny 🔥
Hoping to grab a good deal on the viltrox on this black friday is in 2 days! Right now its 399 if i get 25dlls off im set! If not ill still get it not gonna spend 200dlls extra on the sony one
When you’re shooting in a very cold weather is it safe for the camera? Since the viltrox is not weather sealed? I’m worried some moist will get in the body.
Absolutely nothing to worry about, I've used it a lot in freezing conditions, as long as it's not full on rain, nothing to worry about.

@@PhillipSkraba Although we know that eventually with the passage of time having electrical components can lower their performance

Those are two things that in everyday use don't bother me at all, maybe for someone pixel peeping on a white background without corrections, sure, but when actually using it for photography or filmmaking, nope. The distortion is pretty similar to the Sony 85mm, IF you can see it on a photo, it's a correction that takes a second in Lightroom, and as for vignette, the Sony is just as bad if not worse, once again also something that takes a second to correct in Lightroom - *Enable profile corrections, the Viltrox profile will fix both those at the touch of a button. I wouldn't worry about those two downfalls at all to be honest, unless you photograph rectangular white walls for a living and don't have access to Lightroom.
Man love your honesty in videos - reason i subscribe. Let me ask you question. Whitch of those light do you use more - Aputure Mc or Nanlite 6c ii ? I cant decide which one to buy and i know you can help me :D Thank you a lot 👍
Thank You, I like to let everyone know the truth, there's no point beating around the bush. Aputure MC hands down, it's the one I always choose and the out of box app control is a life saver in many situations.
Or Rokinon/Samyang 75mm 1.8 ! I would get either Sony 85mm 1.8 or Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8, but I have the Voigtländer Macro APO-LANTHAR 65mm 2.0 and the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, so I do not need any of them.
@@PhillipSkraba I only get the best Lenses, so I will not get Viltrox. Mount it on a Sony A7RIV and you can really see the difference to better Lenses !
@@cameraprepper7938 I did, no difference. The only thing the Sony does is digital breathing compensation, so it then becomes as good as the Viltrox for 3x the price 🤷🏻♂️ Rokinon are NOT the best lenses, they are the worst “cine” lenses I have ever used to best honest.
I just watched your comparison video which was great and was wondering which lens you would most likely grab now that it's almost a year later? Do you use both? Many congrats on the birth of your baby!
Thank You! I get that question a lot of Instagram, and the answer is the Viltrox, I have the 24 and 35 Sony too and Viltrox versions, and I reach for the Viltrox, the reason being that they're just as good and they don't have the horrible breathing the Sonys have. The only time I reach for the Sony is when I use the 35mm as it has much closer focus.
@@PhillipSkraba There's no informations that it won't be updated and since there are other Sony lenses that got newer firmware later in its lifetime we should not assume that this one won't get any. I like butter 👍
@@PhillipSkraba But I was talking about updating lens, not the body. I mean the body is just a connector to the lens in the update process and its got nothing to do with the lens' firmware itself. The same goes with tamron lenses which you can update through the body, any sony e-mount body.
