See the magic of my personal designated text editor and document compiler! I was transcribing a old type-written manuscript on Indo-European grammar, and realized there was a good opportunity for a learning moment to everyone interested in vim and LaTeX.

Hi Luke, To put every word on its own line like you do in the glossary, I would do it like this: - Visual-select all lines of the text you copied under the Glossary section - :'

In language I speak as my native, veda means science in English :D and knowledge is vedomosť, funny how those words survived.

I am using vi since SuSE 4.2 and HP-UX 10 somewhere in back the 90's - but your videos inspire me to learn even moar vi stuff - as it shows me my non-knowledge!! Great job! Head on with this, please!! :D

2 things: Xetex(unicode ready latex that also supports custom fonts) tesseract3 (can probably digitize the article)

Great video, thanks. I tend to use search commands a lot more then macros if I can. Not because they are better, just because I find them easier. For example, is have written something like s/\ / /g to swap spaces for new lines. Often in vim, you could ask 20 people how they do something and they'll all give different answers

Good video! A tiny tip, but :norm $xx works too, no need to go to the end of the line twice. :-)

I wonder if it's possible to write out the glossary first, assign some sort of pneumonic for each word and then write out the text section using the pnuemonics. Especially in cases where there might be a lot of repetition and you want to avoid having to write out the excape sequences etc.

Hi Luke. Could you teach how to write/print hebrew characters in Latex (beamer)??

Out of curiosity, why do you not use utf8 and inputenc, or xelatex in this case? Would that not be easier than having to write all the accents in that way? Or is that a function of your keyboard not having an easy way of writing á, é, etc?

Hey Luke! Been a fan of your videos for a while; I remember being subscribed to you when you had under 1k subs, but I see that your channel has exploded since then. Your video on the topic of distro hopping definitely kept me rooted with Arch for a while (definitey helped me get more comfortable with the CLI, learn to get my hands dirty when something breaks, and master Google-fu when I can't find a solution using my own knowledge and experience). However, I've since switched to Xubuntu 16.04 as I'm now enrolled in school. Anyway, I was wondering if you'd be interested in doing a podcast or something similar in the future? (I'd like to start making some videos this year, but I must admit I don't have any equipment other than my laptop. Will probably make GNU/Linux gaming videos, videos recommending free/libre music, etc.) I know making videos with me will do nothing to raise your popularity, but you seem like a chill guy who'd be fun to chat with. Hope life's been treating you well.

Why don't you use UTF-8 source instead the escape sequences, it might be faster to type and look more readable in source... Vim and LaTeX with proper package can handle that just fine. (My language actually belongs to indo-european group so I had to deal with it while writing my thesis :) )

dont know about you, but im brazillian and most of the time i dont need to do anything. gnome-terminal and vim both come with unicode support out of the box. the defaullt monospaced fonts that come with every linux distro usually has all the necessary characters too. and if you want to use xterm or rxvt, they have a special unicode version which most people already install anyway. the only thing luke would need to do was to remap the keyboard to something like US-international and type with the dead keys and alt gr. of course im assuming luke uses qwerty, if he happens to use something like colemak it gets even easier as it has mnemonics for the diacritics

For whatever reason the audio cut out a few times. Could be my end but, you should watch back on the video to see if it was your recording. Keep up the good work.

Yeah I actually noticed this and did some repairs. I've been having problems with ALSA when my CPU gets intensive, not sure what went wrong.

@desktorp

xruns; is ALSA set to 44kHz or 48kHz ..? In my experience (despite kernelboy claims that rt scheduling is today, sufficiently 'built-in') the stock kernel continues to do a horrible job of giving rt/preempt/lowlatency priority to audio streams. The stock kernel will basically never prioritize anything the way you want. It just drops whatever it wants and that will invariably end up being the audio stream.

Could you do a vim video on getting out of jail ? for us noobs, vim can be frustrating, you are editing a file and some how you screwed it up and don't know how to get back to the original. OR you somehow managed to save the changed file when you didn't mean to, is the original file lost forever?

Also Luke, you are transcribing it directly and not using any OCR?
@LukeSmithxyz
@LukeSmithxyz 7 лет назад
I've never had good results from those kinds of things, especially considering I plan on transcribing it "abstractly" in LaTeX macros so I can use it in new ways.
@desktorp

Isn't OCR horribly inefficient or has that changed in recent years? Been a long time since I've tried it.

david esktorp in my profession, OCR has improved. One of a few resource I use and recommend from my University is ABBYY Fine Reader 12. This is an advanced ocr software that lets you get very detailed in Optical Character Recognition.
