I have had this clip on an old audio cassette for over 25 years and have listened to it countless times. With Vin Scully retiring after yesterday's game on October 2, 2016, I thought it would be a great time to finally upload this gem and share it with the world. On July 28, 1991, I was relaxing at home, listening to Dennis Martinez retire Dodger after Dodger. Just before the bottom of the 9th inning, I grabbed the nearest cassette (Steely Dan's Greatest Hits), and hit the record button. Fellow Vin Scully fans, pull up a chair and share a little of this very special Sunday a quarter century ago.

Incredibly sad to just learn that the great Vin Scully has passed away. As a longtime Expos fan I know what a devastating loss means. Vin Scully was and always will be the greatest part of MLB. But like the former love of my life, nos amours or the Montreal Expos, Vin Scully will always be an unforgettable part of my life. RIP.

I was actually at that game with my best friend. Die hard Dodger fans started rooting for this historic moment. It was really amazing to be a part of history even though it came against my favorite team.

What a privilege it was to listen to Vin Scully. The first voice I ever associated with baseball (1986 World Series)... I was five years old. To me if the game of Baseball could speak, Vin Scully's voice would come out.

If you never had the privilege of listening to Vin do a ball game, and you watched the movie For Love of the Game, you might think he was being over the top, or corny. But then listen to this, or to the last inning of Koufax's perfect game, and you realize that no, that is exactly how Vin announced a ball game. He was a poet with a microphone.

My uncle took me to this game. I just turned 13 a month prior. I loved the Dodgers so much...and hated that they were getting perfected. I was the only one sitting down during the last out. Imagine? Everyone was standing. Clapping. There I was with my arms folded. Pissed off. Hahaha. Of course now that I'm older, I can appreciate it and tip my hat to him, LOL. Glad to be a part of history.

As an Expos fan who sat transfixed watching this game live on TV, a big shout out to the LA fans. A standing ovation for a perfect game from the visiting pitcher. That is pure class - true fans of the game!

I was there, with my girlfriend at the time, and we did indeed give Mr. Martinez a well-deserved standing ovation! Everywhere I looked around the Stadium, everyone I saw was standing and applauding.

oh this is money. i was 7 at the time and i got to go to this game. Like El Presidente, I'm also a Martinez so it was pretty cool even as a Dodger fan. I kept a scorecard most of the game, til the 7-year old in me finally got a bit distracted. But I remember how Mike Morgan was similarly good, almost perfect for about six innings. I'm not sure I've ever heard Vin's call of this, but it's always something I looked for and what-do-you-know, tonight I found it. I certainly remember Chris Gwynn's drive to Grissom in CF and you just put me back there high up behind home plate at Dodger Stadium. So thank you.

I loved how Vin Scully reflected as the moment was unfolding about how remarkable the game of baseball is, how he called Larsen toss a perfect game, how he called Koufax’s perfect game…absolutely perfect way to set the stage for what was about to happen

El Presidente, El Perfecto! As called by Dave Van Horn, longtime Expos announcer. One of Montreal Expos brightest moments, along with Bill Stoneman's two (2) No-Hitters April 17th 1969 and October 2nd, 1972; and the 1981 NLCS Playoffs...What is MLB waiting for to grant Montreal another franchise? Please LMK!

@@somebodyandthem ''They'' were greedy owners who sold out the team and us fans! There is still a strong fan base here and several MLB teams have worst attendance than the Expos in their lean years - After 11 games over six years, 469,832 spectators watched the Montreal-based Blue Jays pre-season games, averaging 42,712 per game. montreal.ctvnews.ca/montreal-draws-the-third-largest-mlb-crowd-for-blue-jays-game-monday-night-1.4352776 - So there eh?

@markmalone5384
@markmalone5384 4 года назад
@@somebodyandthem What do you mean one time thing? 11 games over a 6 year period, and ALL games were very well attended. Furthermore several were on Mondays and Tuesdays, not even on week-ends. Montrealers like me are still upset over the team leaving after the 2004 season, and I believe there is enough fan base and love of the game to make this a success. The key will be to have real baseball lovers form the ownership, NOT greedy business men with hidden agendas. Of course the new team will need corporate sponshorship and maybe a little encouragement from different levels of government. Are you a Montrealer? I was there, were you?

Michael, glad you enjoyed the recording. You're right that Mike Morgan pitched a great game that day as well. If not for a couple of errors that led to two unearned runs, the game could possibly have been even more special!

A great performance. Juan Samuel nearly busted it with a bush league bunt attempt. Then he really had to earn it by getting a real professional hitter, Chris Gwynn, for the final out.

Denis Martinez said in Spanish, " at 9 inning I started to realize that a perfect baseball game was possible so I started to talk to God and I said, " God you brought though all these inning so far and now you have me at 9 inning, it is time you help me to do it and your will, not mine, be done to pitch this perfect game." God did it. God is real to anyone who believe on him.

Why isn't Dennis Martinez in the Baseball Hall of Fame? His career numbers are relatively the same to those of Jack Morris, who is in the Hall of Fame. Martinez has a better career ERA (3.70 to Jack Morris' 3.90) than Morris. The main sticking point that I heard against Dennis Martinez is that he never won more than 16 games a season. Also, he only had four years where his ERA was bellow 3.00. And while he did play 23 seasons, Martinez was only an All-Star in four of them.
@hagamapama
@hagamapama Год назад
lack of postseason cred. Morris carried a key game for the Twins IIRC, a 10 inning shutout. Throughout is prime El Presidente played for non playoff teams. Never really got the chance to show what he was in extra games because he kept winding up on mediocre teams..
