"That is blinkin' fertilizer" was the best line Vin Scully ever said, IMHO, and he had many, many great comments over the years.

The best part of this is that Vin wanted them to get the call right. No home town bias. Just get the call right. Which of course they didn't. Vin was one of a kind that's for sure. The best to ever do it.

Living here in LA we got spoiled with Chick and with Vin, but it was Vin who made us listen with the transistor radio to his colorful description of the game. Thank you Vin.

August 6, 2012. Colorado (38-68, out of contention) at Los Angeles (59-50, 0.5 GB San Francisco in the NL West). Seventh inning, Colorado leading 2-0. Dodgers at bat with two outs and a runner on first. Shane Victorino hit a line drive to center fielder Dexter Fowler. He was called out on the play, but then the umpires huddled and ruled no catch. Fowler was in the dugout because he and the other Rockies had run in there thinking the inning was over. He wasn't ejected or anything. The umpires placed the Dodgers baserunner, A.J. Ellis, on third, and Victorino on first, and play continued with two outs. Big fuss as you can see, but the Dodgers failed to score in the inning, and the final score of the game was 2-0 Rockies. Rockies finished 64-98 in last place. It was Jim Tracy's last year as a major league manager. Dodgers finished 86-76, eight games behind the Giants, not qualifying for post season. Vin Scully was 84 years old here, and would continue calling games for the Dodgers for four more seasons following this one.

No one loves Vin Scully more than I. But had they had instant replay in place then, the no-catch call would have stood. Not sure how Vin missed this but under slow-motion with a good angle, it is clear the ball hit the grass. Clearly no catch and Jim Tracy should've been forced to make a public apology for his irrational rant

Idk to call this ironic that this show's up on my homepage the day after Vin's passing. But I do remember watching this game live with some of my family, and all of us were laughing at the fact Vin was lip reading "f*cking bullsh*t" as blinking fertilizer. There was also another game I recall; where I believe Joe Torre was ejected, and was also narrated by Vin using constant "fertilizers". Small things that have stuck in my head over the years because of Vin's voice.. RIP

It isn't that Vin is so much better than anybody else, the problem with saying that is there is NOBODY that even does what he does. It almost doesn't even seem fair to say he's the best. I mean who's the poor guy you would even compair to Vin? I don't even know if that even made sense. Vin Scully is the only man that does the thing Vin Scully does. Goodnight...

See for yourself. Press pause. Use right caret (arrow) to advance frame by frame. Ball looks like it bounces off turf. Impossible to tell in real time, umps saw ball bounce which is what they called.

Vin said once that he almost got in serious trouble the first year he called Dodger games because he misread "hot shot hit into the foul area". Try saying that 10 times quick without saying the 4 letter word for feces. The next week he was almost refused service at a restaurant because he accidentally cussed and it was 1950 when polite society had a bit of a Victorian (prudish Puritan) renaissance in the US. The funniest part is, he's such a devout Catholic that he was completely mortified at the accident. Wouldn't surprise me if he was at the confessional booth minutes after signing off.

Vin Scully was fantastic, but his narration here apparently also suggests that he had severe vision problems; that ball clearly touched the ground before it was controlled in the glove, so by definition there was no legal catch.
@JoeVideoed
@JoeVideoed 2 года назад
The way I saw it , the ball was halfway there. You're just assuming he had vision problems, BTW. It doesn't seem like he was 100% about his look anyway; it was that close.
